Walter Jon Williams is "The Man" of storytelling as far as I am concerned. No other writer working in Sci Fi today that I have read can create heroesthat are reprehensible and admirable simultaneously like he does. His work does not seem to belong in the same genre as Star Wars. On my shelf it sits between Lovecraft and Tolkien.
In most "Slick Fic" there is a clearly defined good guy and a clearly defined bad guy. There are clearly right and wrong actions. Not so in the WJW universe. Heroes have doubts. Heroes abuse substances, and Heroes beat the "bad guy" past submission. The story you read is not always the story that "happened." Heroes don't always have happy endings in the story, if they have endings. The reader sometimes has to figure what happened next.
Lovecraft and Tolkien blew the doors off their respective Genres. Lovecraft wrote stories about people that I ultimately came to care about. In Lovecraft heroes mess up and die. Or mess up go insane and then die. Heroes that don't end have an entire story that often goes unwritten. Tolkien has volumes of work that sit behind each character, and (Especially in The Silmarillion) good and evil aren't hooks to hang your hat on, but devices that help to define characters actions instead of their personality. If you know what I'm talking about, read on, If not, go buy "Days of Attonement" by Walter Jon Williams and read up. Walter Jon Williams is the author of about four or five of my favorite books. His characters seem "Real" because they see problems, oppertunities, and want to make the best life they can. His plots are riveting but never straight forward. Be prepared to work when you read these books. Writing is Walter's passion and really reading and thinking about what's in front of you serves better in these books than in most.

Jim Freund: Welcome back to Omni Visions. Our guest tonight will be sf writer Walter Jon Williams. What follows is John Clute's article on him from the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (available in paperback and CD-ROM): Walter Jon Williams (1953- ) US writer whose first works were nautical tales as by Jon Williams, beginning with The Privateer (1981). He began to publish sf with Ambassador of Progress (1984), a [...] novel in which a female agent whose mission is to revive civilization makes contact with an abandoned, semi-feudal colony planet. Knight Moves (1985) describes the attempts of an immensely powerful immortal and his old friends and enemies to discover a technique of matter transmission and to repopulate an almost abandoned Earth with fantastic creatures taken from mythology, in a style reminiscent of the early Roger Zelazny. But it was with the appearance of cyberpunk that WJW seemed to have found his true voice as a writer. In the Hardwired sequence Hardwired (1986), stories like "Video Star" (1986)

Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Walter Jon Williams
This is a brief discussion of Walter Jon Williams and, of course, of some books by Walter Jon Williams.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Williams; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Williams tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Williams worthy; in sum, to help you rank Williams (and the works by Williams listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

Favorite science fiction authors: Walter Jon Williams
Walter Jon Williams is one of my favorite writers still working. His storytelling style is very clean and natural, as opposed to some writers whose mechanics distract me from the story. His characters breathe and sweat, and his plots and endings are compelling. Much of his work is ``hard SF,'' but see below for some works I like that are not firmly in this sub-genre.
    • Some people might consider Hardwired to be pretty firmly in the Cyberpunk canon. It has the classic elements: heavily modified human bodies, gritty noir scenery, and plenty of action. But I think he does this kind of thing better than Gibson or Sterling. Not for children.
    • Voice of the Whirlwind is similar to the previous title in its cyberpunkish milieu. Great story.
    • Aristoi is just about my favorite work by this author. I had a little trouble getting started because the protagonist didn't seem very vulnerable or sympathetic, but somewhere around a quarter of the way through, things got interesting fast and it turned into a hell of a ride. I particularly liked the method he invented for depicting how a fragmented personality works. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good people story that grows out of technology.
    • Angel Station . The scenery is familiar, with hi-tech and spacecraft, but the psychic landscape is pretty different. Great protagonists.

    The Rift ... Metropolitan
Since 1981 Walter Jon Williams has published 19 novels and a pair of collections, running the gamut from cyberpunk and hard science fiction to fantasy and historical adventure. His short fiction is in high demand, with his 1996 Martian-invasion piece, "Foreign Devils," winning the Sidewise Award for alternate history. His most recent works are the epic disaster novel The Rift and the collection Frankensteins and Foreign Devils . A black belt in the martial art discipline of kenpo, Williams makes his home in New Mexico.

Review: House of Shards , Walter Jon Williams
House of Shards is a science fiction crime comedy that teeters self-consciously on the edge of farce and has grand fun while doing so. In the universe of the novel, humanity has just broken away from the Khosali Empire. The novel states that Khosali High Custom allows people, within certain well-defined limits, to steal for a living; and the societies of the Human Constellation, for lack of anything better after several thousand years of Khosali rule, follow High Custom. and goes on to explain that Allowed Burglary is the result of damage control for a kleptomaniac Emperor, not of any particular societal principle. Though the two societies are beginning to diverge at the time of the novel, many Allowed Burglars are humans, including the protagonist of the book, Drake Maijstral, and his major rival, Geoff Fu George. These two Allowed Burglars, plus their entourages of assistants, find themselves on the very small Silverside Station, a newly-opened resort bathed in the light of one star devouring another. Attending the opening are, among others, a number of potential Burglary targets; Lord Qlp, a large slug-like alien whose five brains make it all but incomprehensible to other species; and Kyoto Asperson, an interviewer who fancies herself a dramatist. The novel weaves a tangled network of rivalries, romances, and unlikely duos among these vivid characters, enlivened by the cultural clashes of the three species. The amusement level is also kept high by bits of clever prose, such as the description of a security chief named Sun (who finds the color blue restful) realizing that he's no match for the Allowed Burglars on his station:
