Interview with Walter Jon Williams
via e-mail - end of march 2004
French version here

"Dread empire's fall - The Praxis" / Flammarion – Imagines (Avril 2004) for the french version Lunatik : First of all, as “The Praxis” will be published in April, what can you tell us about the story ?
Walter Jon Williams : It's sort of like "War and Peace." It's about conflict, families, adventure, war, politics, love, hate, despair, crime & punishment, fathers & sons, sons & lovers. There are also a very many magnificent explosions. Lunatik : It’s the first book in a series. Was it conceived as such, or did you find the story needed more development as you wrote it ?
Walter Jon Williams : I conceived the series as a long story in several volumes. Because the American publisher wanted three books, I will tell a complete story in three volumes, but there will be an opportunity for more books as time progresses. Question about him, his work and his influences

NOTE

The Novels of Walter Jon Williams
Last updated September, 1998 Walter Jon Williams started out working in a similar area as Roger Zelazny. Williams is not as poetic as Zelazny and he writes more science fiction than Roger. However, in some books they share common characters (near gods) and goals (the struggle for correct action when one has nearly infinte power). Aristoi
A remarkable novel driven by a very clever idea: namely that humans can usefully divide their personalities into many different "sub personalities". Far from being a form of disease, it represents a way to bring powerful abilities to the fore. The Aristoi are those humans who have very well developed personalities that can work together to create entire worlds. Hard Wired
A great "cyberpunk" novel from the early 80's. Thematically related to Zelazny's novel "Damnation Ally". Very violent with hard characters who end up fighting the good fight for freedom. House of Shards
One of the funniest science fiction books published (ranks up with Snow Crash and Martians Go Home). A sequel of sorts to an early novel titled The Crown Jewels. House of Shards is a vastly superior book.
Other Walter Jon Williams Books
Angel Station . This novel is set on a rough and not very pretty space station where two character, a brother and sister, want to escape to a better life out in space. Not one of my favorite stories but not bad.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Science Fiction The set-up, as partially given on the back cover of the book, reads like pretty standard stuff. But Williams does lots of subtle and unsubtle things here to set himself and the reader up for a rocking good time. The space empire of the Shaa lasted 10,000 years, but with the death of the last of their race, the old order is breaking down. The Shaa ruled by virtue having the most powerful technology and being ruthlessly violent conquerors. Wormholes enable them to travel interstellar distances in a moment and rule a vast empire. Humanity, the Naxids and the few other races under the yoke of the Shaa haven't done too badly, as long as they were willing to torture and kill those who violated the rules of 'The Praxis', which seems to boil down to: Do what we say and don't ask why. But that's not the only important underpinning of the series. Not far into the novel, Williams explains that the Shaa prohibited not only disobedience, but also nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, cybernetic enhancements, and genetic engineering. Obviously, any of these might have made it possible for the client races to undermine the power of the Shaa, but it also has the helpful side-effect for Williams of enabling him to unfurl a full-blown Buck Rogers/Star Wars style space opera without having to deal with any of the pesky advances of the last 20 years of our history and our science fiction. The empire of the Shaa is different from the British empire of the 19th century in scale, and in the fact that the sun does not shine upon all of it to set, but otherwise Shaa's Burden is rather similar to another unpopular obligation.

A burning woman stalks the streets. Ten stories tall, her naked body a holocaust of fire.
That horrific vision is all Aiah thinks of as she sleepwalks through her dead-end job meting out plasm a mysterious and powerful substance created by geomancy from the intrinsic power of the city structures and ticketing the outlaw plasm divers who burrow through abandoned cellars looking for untapped sources.
But Aiah has learned that plasm is more than an energy source; it resonates within the human mind, giving power to heal, to fuel dreams and visions, and to kill. So when she finds an undiscovered, unlimited supply, she dares to meet with the powerful Metropolitan known a Constantine, a handsome, mysterious rebel with plans. Together they can use the plasm to rally forces to overthrow not only the government but the culture it has enslaved. They know the dangers of their maneuvers. Subject: Review of Walter Jon Williams' "Aristoi" Note : Except for possibly a clue as to whether or not the Bad Guys win, I don't think there are any serious spoilers in the following. If even that clue bothers you, skip along! Executive summary : An involving far-future ultra-tech novel with interesting characters, credible science that stays politely in the background of the story, and some unusual and noteworthy character development. Slips into a bit too much physical fighting and blood-and-gore in the second half. Recommended, especially for experienced sf readers (beginners may need a little help with some of the implicit tech). Setting : Something like 1000 years after the destruction of Earth by runaway nanotech. The survivors have built up a very civilized multi-planetary civilization (the Logarchy) in which only the Aristoi (selected by a series of tests which are, quite properly, only very vaguely described) are allowed to mess about with dangerous technologies like nanomachines and gravity generators. Each of the Aristoi has his/her own set of solar systems to rule over (one effect of the tests seems to be to pick people who would make good, as in benevolent, absolute rulers). By no means a cyberpunk novel, but much of the c'punk ultra-tech is there: direct-to-brain virtual-reality (the "oneirochronon"), genetic engineering, implanted computers ("renos"), body alteration (including sex-change at will), etc.

To learn more about Walter, and his other novels, please visit his website Q) How would you describe your journey to become an author? Was this something you felt driven to do when you were young? A) To paraphrase Harlan Ellison, I think you can still read the scribbling I left on my mother's womb. I wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember. Even before I knew how to write, I'd dictate stories to my parents, who would write them down for me, and then I'd illustrate them with my crayons.
