EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Walter Jon Williams interviewed Science fiction author WJW chats about bashing out a new Star Wars novel, the impact of September 11th on his writing, and how he probably left a few scribbles on his mother's womb. DR: How did you get the opportunity to write a Star Wars novel, and what attracted you to the idea? Are you a long-time fan of the series? WALTER JON WILLIAMS: I got the job because, well, they asked me. I'd like to think it was because they'd read my other books and liked them. I was a fan of the films, but had never read any of the books. Imagine my surprise to discover that Han and Leia had produced three children and that Luke had married a woman who wasn't in any of the movies! DR: How much input and creative freedom did you have in writing DESTINY'S WAY? WJW: There is a NJO series arc, and the arc demanded that certain things take place in DESTINY'S WAY. The rest of it was up to me. The demands of the story arc were fairly flexible, and I experienced little difficulty building a story around them. DR: Was this the first time that you've worked in someone else's universe? What are some of the difficulties involved in this kind of corporate collaboration?

T he Sundering' is the continuation of the coup in the Praxis Empire with the human/terrain side making something of a comeback against the largely unseen alien Naxids. We follow this crisis through the provincial but rising through the ranks Lord Gareth Martinez and Lady Caroline Sula, who has a career change from pilot to ground terrorist as well as concealing a secret of her own.
After organising the strategy for a victorious battle against the Naxids, Martinez spends some time in the capital world Zanshaa with Sula before duty calls and arranged marriages for position take over from any feelings from the heart. At political level, this element is straight forward enough for even the least politically motivated reader to stay interested in although this reviewer does find it odd that such a respite can happen despite the apparent danger of invasion. Then again, this is a society built up on social status and, unless you're recognised, I doubt if you'd rise up through the ranks.
Walter Jon Williams has always had good story-telling ability although I found in places here and there, book 2 was somewhat forced especially in terms of explaining detail rather than incorporating it more into the story. Sula's espionage techniques aren't that far removed from our present century although some of the technology would make it a lot easier had her team knew how to use it properly.

September 30, 2002 EU Crash Course Several times in Destiny's Way , the latest book of The New Jedi Order, characters proclaim that it is indeed the turning point of the bloody war between the Yuuzhan Vong and the New Republic. Author Walter Jon Williams takes the story through many pivotal confrontations, including an immense battle at novel's end that will leave indelible scars on the defeated fighting forces. Though work on the novel started about half a year ago, Williams' introduction to the Star Wars mythos began as it did for most, in a darkened movie theater in the late 1970s. "The first showing of Star Wars in my town was at something like 11:30 am on a weekday morning," he recalls. "I had been kicked out of grad school and had no job, and decided to go on the spur of the moment. A line had already formed and all my friends were already in it. This was my first clue that Star Wars was going to be a special phenomenon for people of my generation" Fast-forward years later, Williams, already a published and successful author, was approached by Del Rey Books to officially enter the

Just as Walter Jon Williams was poised to become the next great pirate novelist, the bottom fell out of the books-of-high-sail market. So he made the logical move into science fiction, turning out a variety of acclaimed books, including Hardwired (Tor, 1986), Days of Atonement (Tor, 1991), and Aristoi (Tor, 1992). His latest book, City on Fire (HarperPrism, 1997), is a sequel to his novel Metropolitan (HarperPrism, 1995), and continues his heroine's story of political intrigue and technological sorcery in a futuristic urban setting. Walter joined host Martha Soukup on 19 November to chat about the future and Walter's great recipe for black-root gumbo.
Martha Soukup: Welcome all to Head Space, where our special guest, live from the great nation of New Mexico, is Walter Jon Williams. Walter Jon has written about a zillion good novels and stories, is a major contender for losing more Hugos and Nebulas than most people can dream of getting nominated for in the first place, and has just written a sequel to "Metropolitan: City on Fire." Lawrence person: So Walter, I understand you have an interview out this month in legendary zine "NOVA EXPRESS."

Past editions of this site have tended to reflect my personality, which tends towards the whimsical and chaotic. But the chaotic aspect of this site was beginning to overwhelm my other virtues (whatever those may be), and so I've decided to crack the whip on this site and make all the links line up in neat little rows. What you may lose in whimsy is, I hope, gained by the fact that you may actually be able to find what you're looking for.

EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE The Praxis: Book One Of The Dread Empire's Fall by Walter Jon Williams O ne thing I learnt from reading the 'Wild Cards' mosaic stories was to keep an eye on any of the authors who worked on it. Walter Jon Williams being no exception as I thoroughly enjoyed his own novel, 'Knight Moves' that I read shortly afterwards. This book I'm not so sure about at present.
Essentially, we have here the backdrop of a galactic empire on the verge of falling apart after the last of the Shaa, who've held it together for ten millennia under brutal rule through their military, the Praxis. Into this mix, we follow the lives of two individuals of noble blood as they move up the ranks. This is a reality where whom you know and how you're connected can get you promotion or good job placement often better than military achievement. There is Lieutenant Lord Gareth Martinez whose position of power is changed with the death of the last Shaa and sent out on starship duty. A smart officer although seen by the nobility of higher ranks as common through not having a posh accent - snobbery also rules in this reality!

September 30, 2002 Philosophical Masters In Destiny's Way , the enigmatic character of Vergere drops her puzzling guard of cryptic half-phrases and rhetorical questions, and reveals her history as she and Luke Skywalker meet face-to-face. With two masters of the Force discussing the nebulous and slippery topic of the Force and its morality, Williams turned to his own philosophical groundings and background to deliver a dialogue rooted in experience. "It helps that I've been studying these things for decades. I've read philopshy, and I'm a fourth-degree black belt in Kenpo. If you do martial arts, you're in continual contact with the Taoist and Buddhist ideas inherent in Asian martial systems, and this happens whether you consider yourself a Taoist or Buddhist or not," he says. "Since George Lucas seems to have derived his ideas of the Force from such Eastern philosophy there's a reason Luke wears a karate uniform, for heaven's sake I was able to apply what I already understood of these systems to the
