Rutherford B. Hayes kept a diary from age twelve to his death at age 70 in 1893. He was one of only three presidents to keep a diary while in office. The edited diaries and letters were published in 1922 as a set of five volumes, The Diary and Letters of Rutherford B. Hayes, Nineteenth President of the United States, edited by Charles Richard Williams (Columbus, Ohio: Ohio State Archeological and Historical Society, 1922). These 3000 pages of text have been digitized and are now available on the Web for students, scholars, and anyone interested in Hayes and the social and political history of his time period. Researchers can search by volume and keyword or browse through the 5 volumes page by page. Please remember this digitized publication is only a small part of what is available on President Hayes. Officer Charles A. Williams
Oakland Police Department
Date of Birth:
Date Appointed: 1907
End of Watch: April 12, 1912 The family of Special Officer Charles A. Williams said that it was his life-long ambition to wear a uniform and badge. In the late afternoon hours of April 21, 1912, Williams was on patrol in the area of East 12th Street and 13th Avenue. He saw two suspicious looking men alight from a streetcar and opted to stop and question them regarding pick-pocketing activities. Williams felt that their answers to his questions were unsatisfactory, so he decided to walk them to the "lock-up" at the rear of the firehouse on East 14th Street. Williams did not search the suspects, an oversight that would cost him his life. As the trio neared their destination, one suspect pulled free from his grasp and ran down an alley. Williams lunged after the suspect. Suddenly, two loud, sharp reports accompanied by a large cloud of smoke came from the alley. Williams fell dead to the sidewalk. He had been shot once in the heart and once in the head. Williams entered the Oakland Police Department service in 1907. At the time of his death he was being considered for promotion to full membership in the department. His wife and five children survived him. His murderer was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment.

http://homepages.pavilion.co.uk/users/tartarus/williams.html
THE LOST CLUB JOURNAL
The Novels of Charles Williams by Glen Cavaliero Even devotees of weird fiction have paid insufficient attention to the works of Charles Williams – there is no entry on him in the Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural Charles Williams: Poet of Theology (1983) and The Supernatural and English Fiction (1995), looks at Williams’ ghostly fiction. The many people who have bought The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories since its publication in 1986 may well have been perplexed on reading ‘Et in Sempiternum Pereant’ by Charles Williams (1886-1945), so greatly does it differ in style and content from most of its companions in the anthology. For here is a story in which virtually nothing appears to happen. A retired Lord Chief Justice, out walking in the country, enters a burning empty house and encounters a troubled spirit on its way to Hell. The setting is vague and the material details scanty. Not until it is over does the story have the power to frighten: it gains its effects through implication. The only tale of its kind its author wrote, in its substitution of spiritual for material terror it epitomizes his approach to the writing of supernaturalist fiction. Today Charles Williams is probably best known for his connection with C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, and in Christian circles as a highly original and perceptive lay theologian. But he was also an accomplished poet, a highly individual literary critic, and the author of seven novels frequently described as ‘supernatural thrillers’. The latter have been reprinted more than once, and are the kind of books which divide their readers sharply. Williams is a writer to whom people either respond wholeheartedly or not at all.

Description
Williams was born at Newtown, North Wales, in 1878 and came to New Zealand in 1902. He first took up farming at Ohaka and entered the grain and produce trade with his own firm. He became very active in local farmers' co-operative and union affairs, and in politics as a councillor for Eyre County Council. In 1927 he was elected a member of the Kaiapoi Borough Council and became mayor in 1948. From 1935-1946 he was Labour Member of Parliament for Kaiapoi. Williams developed a keen interest in tree planting and also founded the Maesgwyn herd of pedigree Ayrshires after draining peat areas on his property. The collection relates mainly to the period of Williams's service in Parliament. There are four outwards letters and eight inwards, including one from Walter Nash and one from John A. Lee. The collection also includes manuscript articles and reprints; notes for speeches; leaflets; election pamphlets; reports; newspaper clippings; the electoral poll, 1938; electors' list, 1959; Labour leaflets and some photographic material.
