Feedback and Temperature Control
by Charles D.H. Williams
Contents
Preface
This is an introduction to the effects that feedback can have on systems. I have chosen an oven controlled by a PID temperature controller to use as a case study but the behaviour described is characteristic of many systems that employ feedback. There is a detailed interactive simulation of the oven-controller system for you to experiment with. I'm interested in any comments - good or bad - about this document. In particular, do you find the hypertext and simulation a significant improvement on traditional textbook or lecture presentation? Also, please let me know if you spot errors or omissions, I'd like to fix them.
Introduction
It is important to have an intuitive feel for the ways that feedback can affect a system if you want to design analogue electronic circuits that work well. This document is designed to help you develop such intuition by using a model of a simple system to illustrate some of the principal points that need to be known about systems with feedback. The early sections summarise the behaviours encountered when different types of feedback are used to control the temperature of a simple model of an electric oven. Next some

Dorothy Sayers In 1944 British writer Dorothy Sayers (1893-1957), already famous as the author of Lord Peter Wimsey detective novels, holed up in an air raid shelter with Dante's Divine Comedy . She finished Inferno —in Italian—in five days, then wrote the following letter to Charles Williams. She knew Williams through C. S. Lewis's "Inklings" group and through Williams's book on Dante, The Figure of Beatrice . Sayers's fascination with Dante resulted in an ambitious translation of the Comedy (used throughout this issue) and numerous essays and lectures.

Williams, Charles, 1909-1975
Fantasia chez les ploucs / Charles Williams ; traduit de l'américain par Marcel Duhamel ; illustrations de Jacques Tardi. [Paris] : Gallimard jeunesse, 1999. 246 p. : ill. ; 18 cm. (Folio junior ; 284) ISBN 2-07-052289-X. SDM: 9911922 [J 5] [Titre original: A diamond bikini.

WILLIAMS, CHARLES TRUETT (1918-1966). Charles T. Williams, sculptor, was born in Weatherford on March 24, 1918, the son of T. L. and Lucy (Hurst) Williams. He studied at Abilene Christian College in 1940-41. He married Virginia Beaver in Abilene in 1941; they had one son. As a member of the Army Corps of Engineers Williams was stationed in Paris from 1944 to 1946. He returned to the United States fired with enthusiasm to produce art. The Williamses lived in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1946-47. Following his wife's death in 1947, Williams moved to Fort Worth to study art at Texas Christian University. He received a B.F.A. degree in 1952 followed by an M.F.A. degree three years later. He married Anita Stuart in 1952; they had a son. A versatile and prolific sculptor, Williams worked with wood, cast bronze, copper, and stone. He was one of the earliest Texas sculptors to use found objects. His interest in nature was manifested in his use of natural materials and sinuous organic shapes, such as his walnut Torso (1949), in which the curves of the abstracted figure were accentuated by the grain of the wood. Williams favored a simple aesthetic, evident in abstract totems such as
