She was born in Wisconsin, lived in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota (then Dakota Territory) with her family often at the front edge of the sweeping westward wave of pioneers. Only the influence of her mother, who wanted her girls to have an education and some stability, kept Laura's ever-restless father from continuing to move ever onward. Laura's life was not greatly different from many of the other young women who were her contemporaries, save that in her later years Laura revisited her childhood in memory, sharing her stories in a series of books that came to be known as "The Little House Books."

Laura Ingalls Wilder Workshop Treasure Hunt
About Treasure Hunts A Treasure Hunt is a web based activity for students revolving around a topic. If your students are interested and excited in the topic and need to learn some solid background information, then integrate the resources of the Web into your curriculum by creating this type of activity. Teachers find the Web Pages that hold the information (like text, graphics, sound, or video) and create one or more key questions to be answered from the information on that page.
Students don't surf to find the information instead they are directed to a specific Web page to quickly locate the answer to the question. The teacher then can engage the students into classroom discussion to synthesize the material they have gathered and shape it into a broader understanding of the topic.
This activity appeals to students and makes good use of time at the computer using the Internet. Teachers may only need to locate
and evaluate a few Web sites to create the activity. Since the goal is curriculum driven, teachers can work together to create Treasure Hunts useable by those in the same grade throughout the school district.

West from Home In which we want more. I've just read a biography about Laura Ingalls Wilder which was so pointless I can't be bothered to remember who it was by. Pointless because it told you very, very little you wouldn't already know if you've read "the Little House books". The author spent 200 pages recapping what Laura herself says more than eloquently enough and then about 40, as a sort of afterthought, about what happened next. Much more satisfying, then, to go back to reading Laura's own words in West from Home , which I finished today. It contains letters from Laura to her husband written when she travelled to San Francisco to visit their daughter and see the grand exhibition in 1915, and is delightful reading.
