The Ghost in the Little House
A Life of Rose Wilder Lane
William Holtz
The book that made literary history is now available in paperback! "Did Laura Ingalls Wilder really write the 'Little House' books? William Holtz's biography of Rose Wilder Lane, The Ghost in the Little House, answers this question in a way that will jolt fans of the much-loved children's series. . . . Holtz's vivid and sympathetic biography brings to our attention the real accomplishments of a remarkable and complicated woman who is no longer nameless: Rose Wilder Lane, co-author of the 'Little House' books." San Antonio Express-News "Holtz's book makes clear for the first time that [Lane] achieved something important and lasting in her writing with the Little House books. His argument about the collaboration between the two women is entirely convincing, and the next time I see the little House series on the shelf at the bookstore, I'll imagine Rose Wilder Lane's name next to her mother's on their covers." Los Angeles Times Book Review "A significant achievement. Holtz has uncovered the buried life of a woman whose struggle to separate herself from her mother and forge her own independent identity replicates the dilemma of many women, whose dedication to writing involved the sacrifice of her own ambitions, whose experience of American life during decades of cataclysmic social and political change comprises a life worth telling. . . . In setting the record straight with fullness, fairness and detail, William Holtz has made a genuine contribution to American life and letters."

    Burr Oak, IA
National Historic Site : This nationally recognized landmark is the only childhood home remaining on its original site. Her little house books have thrilled children and adults alike with tales of pioneer life since 1932. The "missing link" in her series of books was the year she spent in Burr Oak and comes between her stories of "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and "By the Shores of Silver Lake". Burr Oak - Ingalls History The Masters Hotel: During the early 1900's, the hotel was used as a private residence and was transferred from owner to owner for many years. In 1973, after it was discovered that the Ingalls family had lived there, private citizens purchased the building for $1500. Renovations were begun and three years later, in July 1976, ribbon cutting ceremonies were held to officially open it as a museum. Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born February 7, 1867, in a little house in the Big Woods near Pepin, Wisconsin. She was the second daughter born to Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Laura and her family moved several times throughout her childhood, which provided her with information and adventure for her books. She started writing these books when she was 65 years old. Laura and Almanzo Wilder lived on Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri until their deaths. Almanzo died in 1949 at the age of 92. Laura died three days after her 90th birthday in 1957. They are buried in Mansfield, Missouri

Have you ever dreamed of living in another time? Imagine what it would have been like to be one of the early settlers of the American frontier, moving by covered wagon through wide, windy prairies. You can really get a sense of what it was like by reading one of the books in the Little House series. These semi-autobiographical stories were written by Laura Ingalls Wilder who was born on this day, February 7, in 1867.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has said that she and her sisters were busy and happy as children but loved Pa's stories the best. When Laura was 60 years old, she wrote her first book, Little House In The Big Woods, so those stories would not be lost. She thought about how she had seen the settling of the frontier the woods, Indian Territory of the Great Plains, the frontier towns, the coming of the railroad, and homesteading on the prairie. She thought of writing the story of her childhood in eight volumes that would cover each aspect of the American frontier. These became the Little House series.
    The Little House Series
    • Little House in the Big Woods . Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura, and Baby Carrie live in a log cabin in the big woods near Pepin, Wisconsin, in the 1870s. Little House on the Prairie . The Ingallses leave their cabin in the big woods and travel by covered wagon to Kansas Territory where they accidentally settle on land belonging to the Osage Indians. Farmer Boy . The story of Almanzo Wilder's boyhood growing up on a farm near Malone, New York.

I must admit...this is my favorite unit of study! I discovered the Little House books in third grade, and have read and reread the entire series many, many times! Hello Laura! Laura's Garden Laura's Bedtime Laura Helps Pa Happy Birthday, Laura! Merry Christmas, Laura! Laura's Little House (lift-the flap book) Laura's Christmas (lift-the-flap book) We begin this unit in November and introduce Laura and her family. We focus on both the differences and similiarities of pioneer family life and modern family life. A Venn diagram is a very useful tool for comparisions...we use it quite a bit during this unit! We make individual booklets called "Laura's Family" where we write about each character. We also create a three-way timeline, linking this study to that of the first Thanksgiving. We add pictures to a long sheet of paper which depict activities in the 1600's (Pilgrims), the 1800's (Pioneers) and today. This provides a great visual for the children to compare three time periods. Because Laura spent part of her life in Indian Territory in Kansas, we read excerpts from "Little House on the Prairie" about the Osage Indians and their visits to the Ingalls' family. We even find Native American beads in our room just as Laura and Mary did at an abandoned camp! Then we string them just as they did for Baby Carrie!

the life and works of Laura Ingalls Wilder
Probably partially as a result of the cross country road-trips my family took every summer, I disovered and devoured Little House on the Prairie and all the other books by Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder. These were definitely my favorite books for a number of years; I even made my dad take a little detour to De Smet , South Dakota, and on another trip we stopped in Mansfield, Missouri where Laura lived most of her adult life.
