White House Dream Team: Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Reflecting the pioneer spirit of the era, Laura's family moved several times throughout her childhood, living for periods in Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Life on the frontier was difficult, and Laura's family experienced many hardships that threatened their survival. For example, grasshoppers destroyed their crops two seasons in a row, and a winter of continuous blizzards threatened their supplies. Laura's brother died nine months after his birth, and Laura's sister Mary lost her eyesight at the young age of 15 because of a stroke. The lessons of life on the prairie in America's heartland made a lasting impression on Laura. Laura and her sisters attended nearby schools during their childhood, and Laura's love for learning sparked her interest in teaching. At age 15 while living in De Smet, South Dakota, Laura earned her teaching certificate. In a rural area just twelve miles from De Smet, she began her first teaching job. During this time, she met and married Almanzo Wilder. Following in the pioneer footsteps of their families, Laura and Almonzo struggled to establish homes first in South Dakota and later in Minnesota. They along with their daughter, Rose, suffered through droughts, hail storms, fires, and diseases. Laura and Almonzo eventually settled on a farm in Missouri called "Rocky Ridge."

Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920
On February 7 , 1867, Laura Elizabeth Ingalls, the author of the beloved semi-autobiographical Little House series, was born in Wisconsin , the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. The basic facts of her life correspond to those related in her books about her family's experiences on the American frontier during the 1870's and 1880's. The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920 collection contains many images of families similar to the Ingalls who pioneered the settlement of the Dakota Territory . The image below is not of the Ingalls family, but the father and four daughters pictured are reminiscent of Pa Ingalls and his four girls, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace. Laura's three sisters, her parents, "Ma" and "Pa," their good dog Jack, her school friends in the little town on the prairie, and her courtship and marriage to Almanzo Wilder are all well-known to her readers.

Exodus 20:2 Figures of Speech Definition: an expression, such as a metaphor, hyberbole, or simile, that uses words in a nonliteral, unusual, or intensive manner to produce a certain effect; trope. Mrs. Wilder uses figures of speech in the book "Little House in the Big Woods." "Laura is like a wise owl."
This is an example of a simile. A similie is comparing two things by using "like" or "as." This is not really proper English. See how many times that Mrs. Ingall's uses this figure of speech. "The classroom was a beehive of activity."

Laura Ingalls Wilder
American writer "It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong." Introduction Laura Ingalls Wilder is best known for her series of well-loved children's books. It was at the age of 65 that Wilder published her first book entitled Little House in the Big Woods. This first book and those to follow tell a near autobiographical tale of her own childhood. Her life as a pioneer girl is told from the perspective of a child and it is in this voice that she is able to communicate her early life so successfully to the children who continue to read her stories. Father's influence Early education Wilder's schooling was sporadic. She attended several different schools in her youth. Each move of her family meant she would have to start her education again in a new setting and often times no school was yet available. Her father, however, had made the promise to her mother that the children would receive a consistent education. The schooling she did receive took place in one-room school houses beginning with the Barry Corner School in Pepin, Wisconsin, when she was four. In 1880, when Wilder was 13, she finally found some regularity in her schooling. After her father had made the decision to stay put for a while, she and her sisters were able to attend the school in De Smet. Her formal education continued in De Smet until she was 16, although she never graduated.

Past:
Walnut Grove may be the most recognized name of all the towns Laura wrote about in her books, although it is the only town she did not mention by name, because Michael Landon's television series "Little House on the Prairie" of the 1970s and '80s was located here. Although the show depicts the family as living here through Laura's adulthood, in reality, they only lived here a few years. In 1874, when Laura was seven years old, the family left their home near Pepin for the second time and settled just outside Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Laura writes of her early years here in On the Banks of Plum Creek . The family lived in a dugout in the creek bank until Pa could build a house. Laura and Mary began school again, and made both friends (the Kennedy children) and enemies ( Nellie Oleson Laura's baby brother, Charles Frederic Ingalls (Freddy) , was born in Walnut Grove on November 1, 1875, although Laura did not include this in her books because he only lived for nine months. Pa had felt that Minnesota would be "the land of milk and honey", but a plague of grasshoppers destroyed the wheat crops two years in a row. Pa was offered a job managing a hotel in
