Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the events described in her Little House books. As a young girl, she traveled with her parents and her older sister, Mary, in a covered wagon across Minnesota, Iowa, and Kansas, and into Indian Territory, where they lived in the Little House on the Prairie. Then the family traveled back to western Minnesota and lived on the banks of Plum Creek. Finally, they went west again and settled on the shores of Silver Lake in Dakota Territory. Wilder's stories let readers see how pioneers lived in the 1870s and 1880s. The Ingalls family suffers through everything from grasshopper plagues to threats from hostile Indians, but their sense of fun, love, and family closeness never fades. Wilder won many honors for her books, which have been translated into 26 languages and were turned into a popular television series. How did Laura Ingalls Wilder become a first-time book author at age 65? It started with a letter from her daughter, Rose, a writer. Rose urged her mother to write down some of the stories she used to tell during Rose's childhood, and Little House in the Big Woods was born.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER Pioneer days described in 'Little House' books
Laura Ingalls was two months shy of her 16th birthday when she began teaching in a cold, drafty, abandoned claim shanty on the Dakota prairie. Some of her five students were older and taller than the young teacher who so desperately missed her family-Pa and Ma, Mary, Carrie and Grace-back home in DeSmet. Many years later, millions of children, and grownups, became acquainted with Laura and her pioneer family through her Little House books and the subsequent television series. A young homesteader named Almanzo Wilder came courting the young teacher, appearing regularly at the schools where she taught for the next three years, until she finally married him in 1885. Laura lived the pioneer life described in her books-in Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and DeSmet, South Dakota, where Pa Ingalls finally settled. But it was many years later, long after she and Almanzo had moved to Missouri, when she began to put her childhood memories on paper, strongly encouraged by her daughter Rose. Little did Rose realize that her own reputation as a writer would be eclipsed by her mother's fame. The first book

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was the second child of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. She was born on February 7, 1867, in Pepin, Wisconsin. When she was about one year old, her parents lost all their money, so they left Wisconsin for the free land offered to homesteaders in the West. She lived a rugged pioneer life with her family as they moved from place to place. The family finally settled in De Smet, South Dakota. Laura was known as a tomboy, loving snowball fights and handball. When she was only 15 years old, she became a teacher at a school of 5 students 12 miles away. During the 2 months she spent teaching at the Bouchie School, Laura got to know Almanzo James Wilder, a farmer who braved the winter storms to drive her home from school each weekend. During those long drives behind Prince and Lady, the Morgan horses she loved so much, Almanzo gained her affection. After courting for 2½ years, they were married on August 25, 1885, with the bride wearing black. Life was no easier as a farmer's wife than her childhood had been. They spent 4 years trying farming which is documented in The First Four Years , which ended with a fire which destroyed the home "Manly" had worked so hard to build. Daughter Rose was born on December 5, 1886 in De Smet. In August 1889, Laura gave birth to a baby boy who died shortly thereafter. The Wilders then spent several years living with various family members while Almanzo gained his strength back from a bout of diphtheria, which resulted in his partial paralysis. In 1890, Laura, Almanzo and Rose lived with Almanzo's parents in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Between 1891 and 1892, the family then moved to Westville, Florida in the hope that the warmer climate would help Almanzo's legs. Laura hated living there so much that they returned to De Smet. In July 1894 they then left for Laura and Almanzo's final home near Mansfield, MissouriRocky Ridge Farm. Laura's diary of the trip is published in

Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in Pepin, Wisconsin. She was second of five children born to Caroline and Charles Philip Ingalls. Laura had three sisters and one brother. Her father called himself a pioneer man and dreamed of going West to explore and settled on unknown territory. Laura was four when she first started school. The name of the school was the Barry Corner School in Pepin, Wisconsin. Laura only went to school once in a while because her family kept moving from one place to another in their covered wagon. When Laura was 13 her family settled in De Smet and she went to school on a regular basis. She continued school in De Smet until she was 16 but she never graduated. Laura married Almanzo Wilder on August 25, 1885. They moved several times but then settled on a small farm in Mansfield Missouri. This is where they stayed for the rest of their life. They had one daughter. Her name was Rose and she was born December 5, 1886. Rose kept asking her mother for stories of her pioneer days. This is how Laura got started writing. Laura was 65 when she published her first book entitled Little House In The Big Woods. Then she stared writing more about when she was a little girl and that led to the Little House series. But not all were about her childhood. A weekly television series, Little House on the Prairie, began in 1974 and ran for many seasons.

Information about Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder who lived in Walnut Grove with her family never dreamed her Little House books would one day entertain the world.
Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867 in Big Woods, Wisconsin. She learned to word paint by describing how things looked to her blind sister. Mary had suffered a stroke at a young age and lost her sight so Laura served as her sister's eyes. Laura's parents were Caroline and Charles Ingalls. Charles was a private person and whenever folks moved in too close; he would pack up his family and move them on by covered wagon, still looking for his promised land. bodyOffer(16905) Laura's first book, Little House in the Bigwoods, was about her first home where she was born. She included everything she could remember about the little cabin, even the sound of Pa's ax and a little square in the door for the kitty to crawl through. In Little House on the Prairie, she continues telling the story of her family. She writes about their journey to Kansas and how Jack, the bulldog trotted along beside the wagon. In, On the Banks of Plum Creek, she writes about moving again to Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Laura never tells about her little brother, Freddie Ingalls in any of her books. He died while on their journey to Iowa to help friends run a hotel. Perhaps it was too painful for her to bring up the memories. Later, the Ingalls family moved back to Walnut Groove. From there, Pa Ingalls sets off for the west laying tracks for the railroad.

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Author of the "Little House" Books
When LAURA INGALLS WILDER started writing her classic "Little House" book series in 1932, she had no idea of creating fame for herself or the places where she had lived. She wrote simply to preserve tales of a lost era in American history, the pioneer period she vividly recalled from her growing-up years on the midwestern frontier in the 1870's and 1880's. When Laura completed her eight-volume series in 1943, she had achieved a lasting and substantial literary picture of pioneer life as she had experienced it in Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
"I had no idea I was writing history," Laura remarked when her books were well known both in America and in foreign countries where they were translated. (The books are now printed in over 40 languages.) But readers of all ages accepted the Ingalls and Wilder families as chosen friends. Thousands wrote to Laura at her home on Rocky Ridge Farm in Mansfield, Missouri. Fans sought out the sites of her books and stopped to visit her in her Ozark Mountain home, right up to her death in 1957 at the age of 90.
The visiting still goes on. Immediately after Laura's death, the home she and her husband Almanzo built was preserved and opened for readers. In De Smet, South Dakota, a Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society was founded to offer history and hospitality to increasing numbers of summer tourists. Through the years, each of the book sites has joined the ranks of literary-historical spots dedicated to the pioneering spirit and writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
