From site dedicated to the poet Rimbaud, with quotes from Paul Verlaine and oscar wilde.
http://www.geocities.com/bjrents/aby.html
Absinthe is an addictive, intoxicating drink most popular during the 18th century. Artists, poets, painters, writers of the time were indulged to this drink of purpose enhancing imagination and creativity. Rimbaud being one of them was highly familiar to absinthe, together with lover Verlaine who was drawn to the absurdity of drinking and died of debauchery.
P. Gelis-Didot and Louis Maltese
"For me, my glory is but a humble ephemeral absinthe
drunk on the sly, with fear of treason
and if I drink no longer,
it is for good reason!"
- Paul Verlaine
"After the first glass,
you see things as you wish they were.
After the second, you see things as they are not.
Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world." - Oscar Wilde Related Links: Absinthe at la fee Verte Absinthe Sings home works ... trademarks This page hosted by Get your own Free Home Page

The story of Florence Balcombe's choice of Bram Stoker over oscar wilde.

Finegal or Abraham?
The Choice of Florence Balcombe
For the past several months, Florence Balcombe has been dating Finegal O'Flahertie, the baby boy of Speranza, an unconventional poetess who fights for women's rights. To the outrage of many, the six-foot Speranza coolly justifies her public extravagances by saying that she is "above respectability."
Like his memorable mother, young Finegal is colorful and sensitive and writes poetry from the heart. But Florence Balcombe is the daughter of a lieutenant colonel who sees no great value in poetry or in the boys who write it. Lieutenant Colonel Balcombe much prefers young Abraham Stoker, a boy that had been sickly as a child but who "whipped himself into manhood" with a diet of strict discipline and athletic endurance. And like the Lieutenant Colonel, Abraham works as a civil servant. He is a file clerk at the courthouse.
Back home in Ireland, a slightly intimidated Abraham Stoker decides to publish a book of his own. Needless to say, "The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland" is not a huge success. In London however, Finegal O'Flahertie continues to pile fame upon fame as both poet and playwright. His short stories and magazine articles are in constant demand.

Glossary entry for
Wilde, Oscar
The following is extracted from the "Wild Wilde Web":
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was born on 16 October 1854 in Dublin. He would later assert that a name which is destined to be in everyone's mouth must not be too long. All the world would come to know him simply as Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and later at Oxfordwhere he discovered the dangerous and delightful distinction of being different from others. In 1881 his collected poems were published. In 1882, short of money, Mr. Wilde accepted an invitation to embark on a lecture tour of America. The tour was an unmitigated smash and Mr. Wilde returned to London in triumph and richer by several thousand pounds. Mr. Wilde married Constance Lloyd, the daughter of an Irish barrister in 1884. They had two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan. In 1891 a guest of the Wilde's brought a young man to tea. Alfred DouglasBosiewas the foppish, poet son of the Marquess of Queensberry. They were immediately attracted to each other. Bosie was taken with the brilliance of Mr. Wilde's conversation and wit, and Mr. Wilde was entranced by young Queensberry's good looks and title. Outraged by his son's association with Mr. Wilde, the Marquess of Queensberry left a visiting card at Wilde's stylish London club, the Albemarle, upon which he had written, To Oscar Wilde posing as a somdomitehis spelling. Encouraged by Bosie whose hatred for his own father obscured his affection for his friend, Mr. Wilde pressed suit for criminal libel. The case was lost and Wilde charged with homosexual offences. The jury failed to reach a decision at the first trial, but at a second trial Mr. Wilde was found guilty and sentenced to two years in Reading Gaol (pronounced redd-ing jail). He was forced to labor in prison and his meals consisted mainly of gruel, suet, water and greasy cocoa. While in prison Mr. Wilde was declared bankrupt; his house and possessions were sold to pay his debts.

CANTERVILLE GHOST is a musical based on the Oscar Wilde novella by the same name. Set in the 1920s, it is the tale of a young American family moving into a medieval English manor haunted by a fine and respectable ghost of the grand tradition; an expert performer and master of his craft. Unfortunately for the ghost, modern American sensibility leaves little room for such nonsense as haunting. The story maintains the subtle wit and dry humor of the Wilde original, while adding a musical score with more than twenty original songs. It plays liberally with American and British customs, politics, and age-old stereotypes, lambasting both countries to riotous effect.

77. Wilde (Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills)

http://www.proverbes-citations.com/wilde.htm

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
J'ai mis tout mon génie dans ma vie;

Wilde, Oscar
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), an Irishman who was educated at Oxford and lived in London, was a dominant and controversial figure in British cultural life from his undergraduate days until his imprisonment for "acts of gross indecency" in 1895. His views on literature, art, and criticism and their relation to conduct are implicit or explicit in almost everything he wrote and in his public demeanor and his celebrated table talk as well. The scandalous nature of Wilde's peripeteia contributed to a swift and severe reaction against the view of art he represented; and although his reputation has enjoyed a gradual rehabilitation, he is still sometimes narrowly identified with a kind of amoral aestheticism that many people associate, invidiously or not, with a stereotyped conception of male homosexuality. Wilde's habit of expressing himself epigrammatically has made his ideas seem to be essentially clever paradoxes and inversions, designed to amuse and and this has led to a tendency (which Wilde did little enough to discourage) to reduce his critical position to a list of slogans snipped from their contexts: "Life imitates Art" ( Artist 311), "A Truth in art is that whose contradictory is also true" (432), "All art is quite useless" (236).
