Oscar Wilde
Search all of Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) , Irish poet and dramatist whose reputation rests on his comic masterpieces Lady Windermere's Fan (1892) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Among Wilde's other best-known works are his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) and his fairy tales especially "The Happy Prince."
Wilde was born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin to unconventional parents - his mother Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (1820-96), was a poet and journalist. His father was Sir William Wilde, an Irish antiquarian, gifted writer, and specialist in diseases of the eye and ear. Wilde studied at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh (1864-71), Trinity College, Dublin (1871-74) and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874-78).
In 1878 Wilde received his B.A. and in the same year he moved to London. His lifestyle and humorous wit soon made him the spokesman for Aestheticism, the late 19th century movement in England that advocated art for art's sake. He worked as art reviewer (1881), lectured in the United States and Canada (1882), and lived in Paris (1883). Between the years 1883 and 1884 he lectured in Britain. From the mid-1880s he was a regular contributor for

OSCAR WILDE
AUTHOR Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born at 21 Westland Row, Dublin, on 16 October 1854. His father was an eminent eye and ear specialist; his mother wrote under the pen-name 'Speranza'. They soon moved to 1 Merrion Square, where Oscar was allowed to frequent his mother's salon. Wilde defeated Edward Carson for the foundation scholarship in classics at Trinity College, Dublin, and in 1874 won a scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was influenced by John Ruskin, Walter Pater and Cardinal Newman. He became a disciple of aestheticism, pursuing beauty for beauty's sake; his poem Ravenna (1878) won the Newdigate Prize. Wilde's wit and eccentric dress attracted attention, and in 1882 he undertook a lecture tour in America, advising a customs officer that he had 'nothing to declare but my genius'. In 1884, he married Constance Lloyd, a barrister's daughter, and embarked on a literary career. His first success was The Happy Prince (1888), but his novel

Nice new session in San Francisco
This is a gay bar in SF, but you wouldn't know it unless you made it your business to notice such things. The crowd is very eclectic with the usual mix of lifestyles you would expect from a SOMA/Mission District pub. A couple of lovely gals from Cork are the publicans and they offer extraordinary hospitality to musicians that come in for a tune. You can precipitate your tunes with good food if you like because it's a restaurant as well. (For this reason you can come if you're under age until the restaurant closes at around 10:30 pm) It's not very big so the session is intimate and well appreciated by the punters. The session is hosted by Erin Shrader and goes from 8 pm to 11 pm or so. Posted on Thursday, May 20th 2004 by

He went to Trinity College, Dublin and then to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he began to propagandize the new Aesthetic (or 'Art for Art's Sake') Movement. Despite winning a first and the Newdigate Prize for Poetry, Wilde failed to obtain an Oxford scholarship, and was forced to earn a living by lecturing and writing for periodicals. He published a largely unsuccessful volume of poems in 1881 and in the next year undertook a lecture-tour of the United States in order to promote the D' Oyle Carte production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, Patience . After his marriage to Constance Lloyd in 1884, he tried to establish himself as a writer, but with little initial success. However, his three volumes of short fiction, The Happy Prince Lord Arthur Savile's Crime (1891) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), together with his only novel

Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he enjoyed cultivating his reputation as an aesthete and a dandy. He married in 1884 and had two sons, for whom he wrote fairy-tales. His reputation as a writer was established primarily through his comedy plays but at the height of his fame he was provoked into a law-suit by the father of his homosexual lover, and was subsequently prosecuted and jailed. He wrote his most famous poem, The Ballad of Reading Gaol , whilst in prison. On his release he moved to Paris where he died three years later, a saddened and broken man. Wilde was a highly entertaining character, a brilliant wit and wordsmith, and a talented, original writer. His works are as popular today as they were in his lifetime. The Ballad of Reading Gaol
