Essay by Ervin Beck from the Mennonite Quarterly Review.
http://www.goshen.edu/mqr/pastissues/oct99beck.html
October 1999 The Politics of Rudy Wiebe in The Blue Mountains of China ERVIN BECK* Abstract : Although Rudy Wiebe's novel The Blue Mountains of China was published in 1970, two years before John Howard Yoder's The Politics of Jesus , the novel reflects many elements of Yoder's political ethics. The influence of Yoder upon Wiebe was direct, both through Yoder's essay "The Original Revolution" and through the friendship that developed between the two men from 1963 to 1967, when Wiebe taught at Goshen College. John Reimer-who bears traits of both Yoder and Wiebe-is the main voice for Yoderian ideas in the novel and, indeed, was created as a unifying device by Wiebe as his direct response to "The Original Revolution." This essay discusses four concerns of Yoder that are also present in Wiebe's novel: the nature of the church, strategy and revelation, effectiveness and faithfulness, and the outcome of history. From 1963 to 1967 a friendship developed between novelist Rudy Wiebe and theologian John Howard Yoder, when Wiebe taught English at Goshen College and Yoder taught at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries and worked for the Mennonite Board of Missions, both in Elkhart, Indiana. After Wiebe moved back to Canada, their friendship was nurtured mainly by correspondence that continued until just before Yoder's death in 1997.

Rudy Wiebe Biocritical Essay by J.M. Kertzer
Rudy Wiebe has mocked the "personal fallacy" in literary criticism, which "sees every work of art as arising directly out of the artist's experience" and sanctions "a great deal of snooping" into his "life, surroundings and digestion while he was writing." In contrast, Wiebe insists that novels "acquire a life and character of their own, independent of and quite beyond the artist himself" ( VL , 40). They are self-sufficient. However, he would agree that even in their independence, they can be suffused with the passions and preferences of their authors. Without being autobiographical, they will testify to a background, especially one as unique and forceful as Wiebe's. Paradoxically, a writer is most fully present in his work when he completely effaces himself; or as he says: "as a writer, writing, when you are most profoundly yourself you are no longer yourself." Personal traits are assimilated and transformed into a well-crafted fiction. Therefore we are justified in snooping into Wiebe's life if only to see how he has digested diverse influences and used them to give his novels vigorous and complex personalities of their own.
His parents came to Canada from the U.S.S.R. with their five children in March 1930. They were part of the emigration of Mennonites who, since the sixteenth century, have gradually wandered eastward through Europe and Asia to North and South America. Usually farmers, Mennonites have been pioneers, living in small communities, often working rough terrain and existing "chiefly on a fare of Bible and Bread."

Struggle for survival
Rudy Wiebe tells the story of a native woman's misspent life
By SHELLY DECKER Edmonton Sun Rudy Wiebe didn't set out to write a book about Canada's only native woman prisoner serving a 25-year sentence.
The Edmonton award-winning author remembers poring through his mail on a November day in 1992 when his attention was held by a note from Kingston's Federal Prison for Women, penned by the great-great-granddaughter of Big Bear.
Wiebe had spent decades studying the Cree chief and chronicled his story in The Temptations for Big Bear, a Governor General's Award-winning book currently being made into a CBC television series.
The initial letter didn't reveal her conviction for the brutal first-degree murder of a man in the basement of her home in Wetaskiwin, but it led to a series of phone calls, visits to prisons and, finally, to Stolen Life: The Journey of a Cree Woman (Knopf Canada $34.95.)

    When Worlds Collide:
The Historical Validity of Rudy Weibe’s The Temptations of Big Bear. James Knockleby, (drknock@telusplanet.net ) October 31, 2001. History is the study of the past. Many questions of why and how are answered by a person’s interpretations of the evidence collected from a historical event. However, what happens when a person or people are limited in telling the story because of the lack of historical evidence either by accident or design? A society disinterested in the plight of the Plains Cree created an information vacuum in which little of their history remained to reference. To tell their story, the historian must recreate conversations, lives, even people; the storyteller must flirt with the fine line between fact and fiction. Regardless, the story still needed to be told. Consequently, a duality exists in the historical novel The Temptations of Big Bear . It is both a work of fiction and a work of history. Rudy Wiebe constructed his novel in such a way to make up for the limitations in the two areas he drew upon in creating this story: art and history. In 1973, when Wiebe wrote this novel, the other side of the story regarding the conquest of the Canadian West the Native side remained largely untold. The Indian voice was only a whisper in the wilderness, not yet recognized by the dominant White society. Wiebe’s story helped to change this. He gave Big Bear back his voice by divining it from the past. Additionally, he transports the reader back to the past to meet Big Bear. As John Moss stated, “[Wiebe] endeavours to bind us together with a place, to regenerate community across time, to make the land
