Publius Varrus is a veteran Roman officer and a maker of swords. In the early fifth century, amidst the violent struggles between the people of Britain and the invading Saxons, Picts and Scots, he and his former general, Caius Britannicus, forge the government and military system that will become known as the Round Table, and initiate a chain of events that will lead to the coronation of the High King we know today as Arthur. Rich in historical detail, brimming with drama, intrigue and passion, The Skystone gives new resonance to an enduring and powerful legend. Read an excerpt from THE SKY STONE. The Singing Sword - Jack Whyte - Penguin Books - 0140170499 - 560 pages - $10.99 Canadian funds. The legions have departed. The last vestiges of Roman authority are gone and a thriving colony that has lasted for more than four hundred years is poised on the brink of destruction. Publius Varrus and Caius Britannicus are two Romans who choose to stay, choose to fight for their adopted land. They will build a hill-top fort that will withstand the onslaughts of the barbarians who seek to plunder Britain's wealth. Out of their struggles a new Britain and a new people will emergeBritons who are a carefully crafted alloy, a tempered fusion of Roman and Celtic greatness. And one thing more... These two men are great-grandfathers to the man known as Arthur, King of the Britons, and their actions will help shape a nation...and forge the sword known as Excalibur.

The Skystone : The Dream of Eagles Vol. 1 from Tor Books Price: Customer Review: When I first saw this book my initial reaction was "Not another take on the King Arthur myth!" Now that I've read it, I must say, this isn't just another take on the myth. This is the Arthur Myth in a whole new light. Jack Whyte presents Caius Brittanicus and Publius Varrus, the Roman forbearers... more info Customer Rating: Click here for more information Buy from: United Kingdom The Singing Sword : The Dream of Eagles, Volume 2 from Tor Books Price: Customer Review: While not the "Grabber" that The Skysone was, Whyte has managed a solid second book in what must now be considered an ongoing series leading up to, and including, the Arthurian period. Traditionally, second books in a series seem to fall short of the first, but Whyte's The Singing Sword does not... more info Customer Rating: Click here for more information Buy from: United Kingdom The Sorcerer: Metamorphosis from Tor Books Price: Customer Review: First off, I love the way Mr. Whyte writes. It's been a while since I last found a series of modern works worth reading, and the Camulod series really satisfies the true reader. The words fly through the brain effortlessly and the thousands of pages are turned with amazing speed. A good read, and...

As the book progresses, you can visualize the trail that Whyte has chosen. Forbid me to reveal all of the story line. Hopefully, Whyte will have a few surprises and unforeseen twists that will keep the story interesting.
The Singing Sword
(Camulod Chronicles, Bk 2), Jack Whyte, Tor Books, May 1997, ISBN: 0812551397 Paperback, 547 pages The Singing Sword is the type of book that most authors prefer to write, a second book of a series that is actually good. I do have my issues with it. The Cylla Titens affair seems to overshadow everything in the first half of the book. I tried to determine why I felt that this was so, wondering if the sexual titillation of Publius and secondarily the reader, myself, shifted it. But when it finally cleared, I find myself feeling that it was because the first section of the book didn't carry the storyline forward for me as a reader. There was a purpose in Whyte's structure - a depiction of the beginning lawlessness and laxness of moral character, but it could have been crystallized down to a couple of chapters or intersperced into the plot. In other words, from the author's own words - "I dozed off, eventually, then woke again ..."

Jack and his wife homesteaded in 1904. Before homesteading
they ran the Windsor Hotel on First Avenue South in Lethbridge.
He later worked with his team when they were sinking the shaft
in Coalhurst, hauling water from the river.
His house was on a high hill and in 1926 he moved it to the
southeast comer of his land. He milked cows and delivered
the milk to Coalhurst.
Anyone who knew Jack would remember him because he always wore gumboots. He passed away around 1948. Mrs. Whyte had the house moved into Coalhurst and this was where she lived until she passed away. The farm was purchased by Russell Clifton who still owns the land. Return Individual Histories

    Writing Arthur
A Cautionary Tale From An Archaeological Reader By Sandra Garside-Neville
Reading In 1951 Alfred Duggan published Conscience of the King Conscience of the King has recently been republished by Methven, after being out of print for a long time. Sword at Sunset , published in 1963. In fact, this is the Death of the Corn King The Lantern Bearers by Sutcliff, published in 1959, sets the scene for Sword at Sunset , and is generally counted as a book for junior readers. A 1980s novel of note is The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The setting is very much New Age-cum-medieval. It does not fit well archaeologically, and could be marked down by some purists as fantasy. It has, however, given rise to several novels/trilogies that are written from a female point of view, which was, in some ways, a relief from all the male-warmongering of previous decades. However, the best novel of the 1980s in my opinion is Firelord The 1990s were chock-full of trilogies, some of which I have yet to read; some of which I refuse to read!

Jack Drummond Whyte
Obituary /back

Taken from his memoirs
Jack was born in Dundee on 1st April 1922 and sadly his mother died aged 31 when he was just a young child. Jack and his father went to live with his Granny in a cramped flat with only two bedrooms. He attended Dudhope Road School and Blairgowrie High School.
When he left school at 14, there were not many jobs, but he managed to get a job working for the National Census.
Some time later, Jack saw an advert in a newspaper stating that the Countess of Airlie was prepared to sponsor boys in poor circumstances who wanted to go to sea. She would pay for their training at the Mercantile Marine School in London. A letter was written and after medical tests, was accepted. Jack jumped at the chance to see the world so thus became a new entrant at the Prince of Wales Hostel for Boys, Limehouse (which was later changed to Sea School).
The first ship Jack was assigned to was The Orion, a Royal Mail Steamer docked at Tilbury. In 1939 he didn't feel he was getting enough experience as an Ordinary Seaman, so he joined the Cunard White Star Line, sailing on the Ausonia for Montreal, Canada.
When he returned to London after just one trip, he signed on the Orion. When he signed off again, he stayed at the Sailors Hostel, Salmon Lane, Stepney, which had special cabins for ex. Prince of Wales boys.
