The original John Henry story is one of almost Norse fatalism: an ambidextrous giant narrowly defeats a steam drill in a contest to drive steel through a mountain, to make way for a railroad. He subsequently dies of an exploded heart. John Henry Days is full of human embodiments of this theme, people pursuing symbolic victories for their own obscure reasons, even at significant personal risk. The novel is haunted by charactersobsessed collectors of paraphernalia, compulsive freeloading journalists, and the steel-drivin man himself, John Henrycaptivated, and finally summoned overboard, by the siren's call of professional destiny. Sacrifice in the name of Progress, Prosperity, Technology, is not an uncommon theme in our great American stories. Witness The Alamo, or the Horatio Alger oeuvre. But John Henry's story is a dark departure from these. If John Henry were at the Alamo, his death would augur prosperity for future generations of his countrymen, rather than the end of a way of life for himself and thousands of his fellows. Were he the hero in a Horatio Alger tale, his diligence would be rewarded with wealth and greater freedom, rather than an exhausted death in a tunnel. But he is not, and it does not. From the moment he is born, John Henry marches in steady rhythm towards his sealed fate, becoming in some respects more machine-like than the Burleigh steam drill that kills him. This sense of unavoidable destiny holds Colson Whitehead's rangy narrative under its spell, unifying fragments (better, filaments) of diverse chronology and perspective around a single publicity-event-turned-catastrophe: the inauguration of the

Lila Mae Watson is the city's first female and second African American elevator inspector. In any ordinary universe, this would be a rather unremarkable achievement. However, in the world Whitehead creates for us, this is extraordinary. You see, elevator inspectors are held in high regard in this world it's a calling that requires 3 years of training at The Institute for Vertical Transport, one that parents dream of for their children. It's an election year in the Elevator Guild, and by long tradition, the head of the Guild gets the job of head of the city's Department of Elevator Inspectors. The Department is torn between two factions: Empiricists, who work by directly observing the mechanisms that drive the elevators they inspect; and Intuitionists, who feel the mechanisms and sense the elevator's state of being. The Empiricists have long controlled the Guild, but this year, the Intuitionists have a real chance of winning. Lila Mae is an Intuitionist. She's not overtly political, but she falls into this conflict. The book is somewhat disconcerting, as the details of the city are drawn from various cities and eras, creating an urban landscape that is jarring and a bit unnerving. The fact that the entire story is told from within the Department of Elevator Inspectors is further disquieting, as the reader is never certain whether the Inspectors really hold such high status, or if they just think they do.

10. Bold Type: Colson Whitehead
In the Intuitionist, colson whitehead has written an utterly original novel.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/1298/whitehead/
Meet Lila Mae Watson, inspector par excellence in a major metropolitan city's Department of Elevator Inspectors. The first black female inspector in the department's history, she has its highest accuracy rate. Lila Mae is an Intuitionist, and she is never wrong.
The Intuitionists, swamis of elevator inspection, feel the elevator. The Empiricists, on the other hand, go by the book, and naturally, they are deeply suspicious of Intuitionist methodology. So when an elevator crashes on Lila Mae's watch, chaos ensues. Sabotage is the obvious explanation: it's an election year in the Elevator Guild, and the good-old-boy Empiricists would love nothing more than to assign the blame to an Intuitionist.
As Lila Mae tries to uncover the truth, she finds herself caught in a web of intrigue. The sudden appearance of excerpts from the lost notebooks of Intuitionism's founder, James Fulton, has caused quite a stir. The notebooks describe Fulton's work on the "black box," a perfect elevator that could reinvent the city as radically as the first passenger elevator did when patented by Elisha Otis in the nineteenth century. Lila Mae becomes involved in the search for the notebooks and discovers a secret that will change her life forever.
Colson Whitehead has written an utterly original novel, and in Lila Mae Watson he has created one of the most endearing heroines in quite some time. Marked by lithe prose and a stylish urban vision, Whitehead offers a thoroughly engaging meditation on race. A dead-serious and seriously funny feat of the imagination

Walter Mosley Meets Colson Whitehead
Lured by the dual promises of a midday meal at a famous Brooklyn eatery and the opportunity to meet an admired colleague, Colson Whitehead and Walter Mosley accepted an invitation from BOOK to dine at Junior’s Restaurant a couple of months before Whitehead’s second novel, John Henry Days , a rumination on the legendary black folk hero, was released.

The Intuitionist This is their first meeting, though the two have been paying attention to each other for years. Mosley made a strong impression with his first book, 1990’s Devil in a Blue Dress The Intuitionist was published two years ago; Fearless Jones has been eagerly anticipated. The two shared opinions on topics ranging from Ralph Ellison to Spider-Man. And Gina Gershon got name-checked as well.
MOSLEY Why is John Henry important to you?
WHITEHEAD I guess I just always really dug him, in elementary school.
MOSLEY Me too.
WHITEHEAD
MOSLEY How did you feel about him losing to that machine? Because that made me cry.

12. Review Of The Intuitionist By Colson Whitehead
A review by Marlene Stevens.
http://www.babesinspace.net/book/reviews/35.html
The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
A Review by Marlene Stevens
The Intuitionist A Review by Marlene Stevens This novel could be linked to White Queen in a few ways. Both main female characters are tough, operate by their own set of rules, and are members of a minority race. They are very independent, although they use other people to help them achieve their goals. The only difference in their approach was that Braemar was so heartless about it, while Lila Mae never promised anything or expected much in return. Both novels go into a lot of technological detail. In White Queen, we are bombarded with information about alien reproduction, faster than light travel, and computer systems. In The Intuitionist, we learn more about elevators and elevator theory than possibly necessary. Telepathy is explored in both novels as well. Lila Mae diagnoses elevator problems by a kind of telepathy- she senses what is wrong rather than by direct observation. "…She can almost see them now. This elevator’s vibrations are resolving themselves in her mind as an aqua-blue cone…The elevator moves upward in the well, toward the grunting in the machine room, and Lila Mae turns that into a picture, too. The ascension is a red spike circling around the blue cone…She knows what it is…No need to continue." The power of telepathy the Aleutians use in White Queen is also used to communicate with machines. They are able to take over machines and make them do their bidding, as described on page 135, when machines in England and Pakistan turned on the people around them.

Review by Robin Brenner in Rambles.

    Colson Whitehead,
    The Intuitionist
    (Anchor Books, 1999)
Creating excellent fantasy and science fiction seems to me a tricky business. There are so many places one's imagination can go that it's difficult to rein it in and create a convincing other, whether it be an entire world or a set of speculative circumstances. I've come to feel the most affecting visions in fantasy and science fiction are those that are closest to what I know in the present world. If a writer merely tweaks my present (or my past or my near future) I'm more likely to form an immediate and powerful connection to that new place. The most intriguing of these "what if" scenarios must be, of course, well-written and well-plotted, but they must also feel close enough to my experiences to strike a chord of recognition. That's a difficult thing to capture, and even more difficult to successfully evoke. I've often thought this is why precious few stellar science fiction or fantasy films have been made, despite numerous attempts. The pinnacle of all such films remains, in my mind, Ridley Scott's cyberpunk masterpiece, Blade Runner . Of course, Philip K. Dick's novel
