Editorial December 2003 by: Lucas Morel Today marks the 219th anniversary of the death of one of America’s most famous poets, Phillis Wheatley. At the tender age of 31, she passed this earth a poor widow, but not before achieving international renown for poems few believed possible for a former African slave. Thanks to Henry Louis Gates, Jr., chair of the Afro-American Studies Department at Harvard University and director of its W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research, we now have a splendid little volume that reflects upon Wheatley’s struggle to make poetry her livelihood amidst an American people unbelieving in more ways than one. The Trials of Phillis Wheatley: America’s First Black Poet and Her Encounters with the Founding Fathers ($18.95, Basic Civitas Books) offers an engaging account of the triumphs and travails of Phillis Wheatley, an African slave girl who quickly mastered the English language upon arriving in the United States at the age of eight. Within a few years, she not only taught herself to write but to compose poetry that begged the credulity of New England’s powers that be. So much so, she could not solicit enough subscribers to purchase her book of poems because few thought an African could have written them. A trial of sorts was set up to determine the veracity of the teenager’s claims, which Gates uses to explore this and later controversies surrounding the young poet’s life.

Back to Engish 323 page) Phillis Wheatley was a privileged slave girl, born in 1753 and died in 1784, at the young age of 31. As a child Phillis was kidnapped, and brought over to America and sold to the Wheatley family. "The Wheatley family were part of that religious missionary movement that advocated sufficient education of Indians and Africans to facilitate their salvation and to develop their evangelical skills" (Foster 31). The Wheatley's were the best opportunity for the expression Phillis' talent. "Without their financial support and their excellent social contacts, Wheatley's plans all came to grief" (Kafka 46).
The Wheatley's educated Phillis and raised her as if she were their own child. "Wheatley (Phillis) studied the popular literary forms and books that they suggested" (Foster 32). She was exposed to the typical New England education, after which, the Wheatley's "realized that they had a child prodigy on their hands" (Kafka 39). She then studied European contemporary poets (primarily Pope, and through him, Homer), history, religious principles, the Latin satirists Horace and Terence, as well as Virgil and Ovid, and geography.
Wheatley knew that her access to libraries, tutoring, and especially her publication opportunities were only possible by staying in good graces of her benefactors.

Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784) was kidnapped from Africa and sold in the Boston slave market in 1761, so the true year of her birth will always be a mystery. She was bought by Susanna Wheatley, a woman of some means, and welcomed more as a new member of the Wheatley household than as a slave. Phillis was precocious and quickly learned English and Latin. She began writing when she was still only a young girl, and her earliest surviving poem was written in 1767, when she was twelve or thirteen. She was formally freed by the Wheatley family when she was about twenty but remained with them until her marriage to John Peters, a free black man, in 1778.

A Portrait of
Phyllis Wheatley
by Carolyn Phillis Wheatley was born around 1753. She was the second woman to publish a book and the first African American poet. Phillis Wheatley was captured from Africa and sold to a chain gang. Sussana Wheatley saw the little scrawny girl dressed in a rug. She felt sorry for her so she bought her. She looked back at the boat. It's name was "Phillis" so she named the little slave girl Phillis. Phillis was not treated like most slaves for the Wheatley's were kind to their slaves. Unlike the other slaves Phillis was treated like part of the family. She had her own room in the attic with a desk and candles. She learned to read from Mary Sussana's daughter and learned to write by herself. Phillis Wheatley was a wonderful poet and person. She died on December 5, 1784. Phyllis Wheatley, the First African American to Be Published
September 1, 1773

Phyllis Wheatley was only seven or eight years old when she was captured and taken from her home in West Africa. A slave ship brought her to Boston in 1761. Knowing nothing of the talents she would soon show the world, John Wheatley, a prosperous tailor, and his wife, Susannah, purchased the young girl directly from the ship and named her Phyllis Wheatley. Wheatley grew up to be a poet. Her collection, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, was published on September 1, 1773. How did she become the first African American writer to be published, when most slaves were forbidden to learn to read and write?
