Veitch, Jonathan. "Avant-Garde and Kitsch: Nathanael West in an Age of 'Mass Culture.'" Harvard University, May 1992. Advisor: Sacvan Bercovitch (2, 12, 14)
This dissertation explores the cultural history of Depression era America through the novels, letters, and screenplays of Nathanael West. Each chapter is structured around a distinct mode of cultural production: i.e. the newspaper (Miss Lonelyhearts), the Horatio Alger-style rags-to-riches novel (A Cool Million), Hollywood itself (The Day of the Locust). Despite the claim of these media to be dispensing nothing more than "advice" or "entertainment," I argue that West takes them as the loci for a persuasive ideological authority during the thirties and the sites upon which some of the decade's major issues were contested: i.e. the imbrication of mass media and fascism, therapeutic culture and commodity fetishism. "T ired of P assion F ruit": Nathanael West and the University of California Teaching Assistants StrikeA View from Yale
1. To those of us looking in from the outside, events in California frequently seem to adopt an apocalyptic cast. From Oakland's burning hills, to the uprisings in the wake of the Rodney King verdict, to the World-Series-interrupting 1989 earthquake, the Golden State seems to teeter on the edge not only of the continent, but of reality as we who live east of the Sierra Nevada know it. The larger-than-life quality of California existence was perhaps rendered most vividly in literature by Nathanael West, whose novel The Day of the Locust culminates in a massive riot at a movie premier. The uproar West describes is a nightmare of unorganized energy, a chaotic swelter of frenzy and frustration led by restless refugees from around the nation who have followed their dreams to California only to "discover that sunshine isn't enough. They get tired of oranges, even of avocado pears and passion fruit." 2. As I've watched the recent University of California teaching assistants strike from gray, slush-covered New Haven, West's comment that "sunshine isn't enough," that even "passion fruit" loses its luster, has been on my mind. Working as a teaching assistant, it seems, isn't enougheven in sunny Californiaif you don't have the ability to negotiate the terms of your labor.

The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
Named as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the century, as chosen by the editorial board of the Modern Library. Find All 100 Top Novels of Century Here The Day of the Locust is a novel about Hollywood and its corrupting touch, about the American dream turned into a sun-drenched California nightmare. Nathanael West's Hollywood is not the glamorous "home of the stars" but a seedy world of little people, some hopeful, some despairing, all twisted by their own desiresfrom the ironically romantic artist narrator to a macho movie cowboy, a middle-aged innocent from America's heartland, and the hard-as-nails call girl would-be star whom they all lust after. An unforgettable portrayal of a world that mocks the real and rewards the sham, turns its back on love to plunge into empty sex, and breeds a savage violence that is its own undoing, this novel stands as a classic indictment of all that is most extravagant and uncontrolled in American life. "This is the sleazy side of Hollywood, the wouldbes, the neverwases, the hopefuls, and the pretenders. . . . The shames, the deceits and the lies by which they all live are here. . . . It packs a knockout punch." Chicago Tribune

In his lifetime West sold about five thousand copies total of his four novels which, because of miniscule word count and lack of heft, wouldn't get the publicity or praise doorstops like Middlesex and The Corrections garner today. West was not celebrated when alive, so why should we care a hundred years on? Whether we have read it or not, The Day of The Locust West is remembered as a California writer the way William Faulkner is, and this is shameful. The two peers and hunting companions found steady employment in Hollywood's studio system, but West left us with a masterful record of his California with

Jonathan Veitch. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1997. xx + 182 pp. $50.00 cloth; $19.95 paper. Veitch's introduction situates West within the social milieu of the 1930s, the decade in which his entire writing career took place, by describing the specifically American problem West's social criticism addresses. According to Veitch, Americans in the 1930s experienced a "crisis of representation" because they were unable to represent the social reality of the Great Depression, to discern the forces responsible for their misery. He finds this crisis not only in literary works, but also in historical studies of the period and documentary evidence like photographs. The main aesthetic response to this problem, he argues, is exemplified by writers like Steinbeck, who offered an oversimplified pastoralism in which "the particularity of lived experience" was pitted against "the abstract forces of modernity" (9). The remaining chapters trace the development of West's markedly different vision.

Also, West's preoccupations with the illusions of religion in Miss Lonelyhearts - an issue Veitch barely mentions in his discussion of this novel - suggest that West saw the crisis of "representation" as much more than a crisis of capitalism in 1930s America. A clue to what else West is after in his novels might be found in his remarks to Cowley. This letter makes a distinction not just between two kinds of social criticism, but also between the public projects of politics and the more private project of writing. It is not that West subscribes to a different sort of politics than those of Steinbeck and his friends on the left; rather, West believes in and acts on similar politics in his public life, but can only laugh at them in his private life, when he is alone with his typewriter. Veitch's book leaves much more to be said about the role this distinction plays in West's novels.

Related Category: American Literature, Biographies Nathanael West The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931), is a garish satire that foreshadowed the work to follow. Miss Lonelyhearts (1933), his most successful novel, relates the painful life of a columnist for the lovelorn whose misguided priestliness leads him to a tragic and ironic involvement with his suffering correspondents. He also edited and wrote for several magazines and in 1935 moved to Hollywood, where he became a scriptwriter. A Cool Million (1934) was West's bitter indictment of a materialistic world. His last novel, The Day of the Locust (1939), presents a gallery of horrifying misfits living in a vacuous, surreal Hollywood atmosphere. West was never a commercial success in his own time, but his popularity rose after his premature death at 37 in an automobile accident. The Complete Works of Nathanael West was published in 1957.

I thought it one of the Best Novels of All Time
There are times in my life when I'm just not into reading fiction. The semester started, and I spent some time getting caught up, and working on my research, teaching and service. There were changes in living arrangements, grading number theory, playing online scrabble, and reading some very provocative non-fiction. I carried Day of the Locust around with me, reading an odd chapter while waiting for my lunch at the Village Inn, or while sitting in a doctor's waiting room. I had been excited when I read the blurb about "Hollywood in the 30s" - I thought I would learn something about an interesting historical era. Nope. I didn't hate this book - it just never grabbed me. But to be fair, I never really gave it my full attention. When I finished it, my main thought was, "How did this make the list?" I mean, I've hated some books on this list, but I can usually understand why SOMEBODY liked them enough to call them Great. This book mystified me - it was so ordinary. Yesterday, I was in a waiting room and the only thing I had on me to read was
