Eudora Welty's stories 'bear repeating'
By Pearl McHaney Special to CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Pearl McHaney edits the "Eudora Welty Newsletter," a quarterly journal founded at the University of Toledo in 1977 and now published at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where McHaney has been an assistant professor of English since 1998. In this analysis, McHaney, who had often visited Welty, offered CNN her reflections on the famed Southern writer, who died Monday at the age of 92. Of late, people have asked me of Eudora Welty, didn't she repeat herself? Perhaps she did, with a story or two in conversation, but then I always argued that her stories bear repeating and are better than most that are told only once. Eudora Welty never repeated herself in her fiction, however. And in her fiction, essays and photographs, she lives on. Each of her four collections of stories, each of her five novels is fresh, experimental and enlightening. I last spoke with Eudora Welty a few days before her 90th birthday. She was kind enough to see me, although I was hardly one of her friends, just an admirer, spending my professional life introducing others students, family, friends, book club readers to her words.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Like many lyric novelists, Welty is easy to read. She therefore seems (to many students) very simple. They like her work, generally, and don't want to ruin their enjoyment by having to analyze it. I like to begin by looking at what makes Welty seem simple (her lovely sentences, her homey metaphors, her "impulse to praise"). The difficulty here is not a lack of accessibility, but rather that Welty seems too accessible, too superficial. The challenge is to get students to read Welty seriously, critically, analytically. Welty has said that except what's personal there's so little to tell. I'd start where she did: with the hearts of the characters she's writing aboutthe universal emotions they share with us. Why do we feel a certain way about the story? The situation? The character? What is evoked? How is Welty able to evoke a certain response from us? What values emerge? A strong sense of values is something Welty shares with writers like William Faulkner Flannery O'Connor Katherine Anne Porter , Walker Percy, and Alice Walker . These novelists believe in certain things and the communities created in their fiction share both a value system and a sense of what words like "love" and "compassion" mean.

American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Eudora Welty (1909- )
Index Born in Mississippi to a well-to-do family of transplanted northerners, Eudora Welty was guided by Warren and Porter. Porter, in fact, wrote an introduction to Welty's first collection of short stories, A Curtain of Green (1941). Welty modeled her nuanced work on Porter, but the younger woman is more interested in the comic and grotesque. Like the late Flannery O'Connor , she often takes subnormal, eccentric, or exceptional characters for subjects. Despite violence in her work, Welty's wit is essentially humane and affirmative, as, for example, in her frequently anthologized story "Why I Work at the P.O.," in which a stubborn and independent daughter moves out of her house to live in a tiny post office. Her collections of stories include The Wide Net The Golden Apples The Bride of the Innisfallen (1955), and

Southern Literature : Women Writers
By Patricia Evans
See also: Southern Women Writers, A Selected Bibliography

Southern literature can be defined as literature about the South, written by authors who were raised in the South. Characteristics of southern literature are: the importance of family, sense of community, importance of religion, importance of time and place, exploration of the past, sense of human limitation (moral dilemma), and use of southern voice and dialect. Most of the novels are written as a Southerner actually speaks. Many books also describe the historical importance of the southern town.
The area known as the South has been described in various ways. One division is that there are three sub-souths: the coastal/plantation south, which includes the aristocracy; the piedmont red-clay south, which includes farmers and blue-collar workers; and the southern mountains with industry and mining combined with tourism.(1) Another geographical description defines the South as stretching from the Gulf Coast states through Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Carolinas to Virginia and Maryland.(2) The descriptions of the towns (local color) are extremely important to this genre. It is often called regional writing. In the essay, "A Brief Introduction to Southern Literature," Margaret Walker wrote, "It is impossible to read our most distinguished (southern) writers without being conscious at once of the land as well as its people. Author Eudora Welty dead at 92
JACKSON, Mississippi (CNN) Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty died Monday, according to a spokeswoman at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. She was 92. Welty was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. of cardio-pulmonary failure linked to pneumonia, said hospital spokeswoman Ginger Coke. Throughout a career that began with her first published story in 1936, Welty plumbed the intricacies and depths of relationships through carefully chosen prose intended to depict the lives and emotions of her characters. She won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel "The Optimist's Daughter." "I'm not any kind of prophet, but I think it's in our nature to talk, to tell stories, appreciate stories," she said in a 1991 interview. "I think you write about whatever's current. ... They won't be the same kind of stories, but they'll be about human beings." 34. Sew To Speak: Text And Textile In Eudora Welty
Literary criticism by ‰raldine Chouard's on welty's works.
    http://www.samla.org/chouard.html
Sew to Speak: Text and Textile in Eudora Welty "Were you ever a seamstress?" Welty was asked one day, and she answered, "Oh I've cut out things with patterns. No, I'm not a seamstress but I've made things" ( Conversations 273). She then described the writing process as editing "with scissors and pins," shifting and assembling textual fragments, in a fashion very similar to patchwork quilting: I ended up with strips-paragraphs here, a section of dialogue, and so on. I pin them together and then when I want to cut something, I cut it with the scissors. . . . You can move it, you can transpose. It's wonderful. It gives you a feeling of great moveability. ( Conversations Writing, as piecing, is the art of arranging disparate scraps of material into a unique and distinctive design. A text is always a second-hand piece, made of words which have had a life of their own in previous arrangements, as are the fragments of fabric of a patchwork quilt which have served other purposes and which, stitched together in a particular fashion, form new patterns. As Welty puts it: "We start from scratch and words don't; which is the thing that matters-matters over and over again" ("Words into Fiction," ES A quilt, as a text, is always two-dimensional, but frequently creates dramatic visual effects

What I do in the writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart and skin of a human being who is not myself. It is the act of a writer's imagination that I set the most high. Writers and travelers are mesmerized alike by knowing of their destinations. Writing fiction has developed in me an abiding respect for the unknown in a human lifetime and a sense of where to look for the threads, how to follow, how to connect, find in the thick of the tangle what clear line persists. It had been startling and disappointing to me to find out that story books had been written by people, that books were not natural wonders, coming of themselves like grass.
