I've also included Links to other relevant sites.) "I am a writer who came of a sheltered life. A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious daring starts from within."

"`Rosamond's hair lay out behind her, and Jamie's hair was flying too... Red as blood the horse rode the ridge, his mane and tail straight out in the wind, and it was the finest kidnapping that had ever been in that part of the country'
"Once upon a time, many many years ago in old Mississippi, there lived a beautiful young girl whose name was Rosamond. She lived in a house in the woods with her father Clement Musgrove and her evil stepmother Salome, whose jealousy of Rosamond knew no bounds. One day, thinking to do her harm, Salome bade Rosamond go far into the depths of the wood. Pinning up her long gold hair and donning her new silk dress, the green of sugar cane, Rosamond set off there to meet her fate, in the shape of Jamie Lockhart, the dashing young bandit...

Her first short story appeared in 1936, and gradually she began to be published in small, then regional and general circulation magazines. She published collections of her short stories and began publishing novels, as well. Soon after her first novel was published, she stopped writing to care full-time for her family for fifteen years: for two brothers with severe arthritis and her mother who had had a stroke. After her mother died in 1966, she returned to writing. She was a 6-time winner of the O. Henry Award for Short Stories, and her many awards include the National Medal for Literature, the American Book Award, and, in 1969, a Pulitzer Prize.

Eudora Welty
BIO

Shortly after Welty's return home, her father died of leukemia. She took a variety of odd jobs. She was a scriptwriter, an editor of Lamar Life Radio News at WJIX, a publicity agent for the WPA, and Jackson's social news correspondent for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Continuing to pursue a career in photography, she sent a group of her photographs to a New York publisher in 1935. They were rejected, but Welty persevered until Lugene Opticians sponsored an exhibition of her prints at the Photographic Galleries (March 31-April I5, 1936). She also submitted her short stories to a literary magazine Manuscript, in Athens, Ohio, which accepted Death of a Traveling Salesman" and "Magic."
Eudora Welty continued to work on her short stories in 1937, sending several to Robert Penn Warren and Cleanth Brooks, editors of the newly established Southern Review at Louisiana State University. Welty was so discouraged when they returned her story, "Petrified Man," which other journals had also rejected, that she tore up her only copy of it. When Warren expressed second thoughts about his rejection, she rewrote the story from memory. In 1938 "Lily Daw and the Three Ladies" appeared in The Best Short Stories 1938, and in 1939 "A Curtain of Green" was chosen for The Best Short Stories 1939 and "Petrified Man" appeared in O. Henry Prize Stories of 1939, but her collections of short stories continued to be rejected by both English and American publishers.

Please note:
Eudora:
How a Southern writer came to lend her name to a computer program
MOST PEOPLE on the Internet know about Eudora. The e-mail program, that is.
Not so many, however, know that Eudora got its name after the Southern writer Eudora Welty.
The program was created by Steve Dorner in 1990 at the University of Illinois in Urbana. By then he worked for NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications), and the first version of the program, which took about a year to develop, consisted of about 50.000 lines of code.
Dorner had a vision of making e-mail easier to send and receive than it was then, more user-friendly if you will. He also had a vision of a more widespread use of e-mail, something that is beginning to happen now.
"When I was in college, I read Eudora's story 'Why I Live at the P.O.'," Dorner explains to me in an e-mail message.
"The story stuck with me", Dorner says. "When it came time years later to name the program, I remembered the title, rearranged it a bit to 'Bringing the P.O. to where you live,' and used it for the program's motto. Then I named it Eudora."
Eudora Welty, this great Southern writer - by some proclaimed Nobel prize candidate - was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1909. She still lives there, in the family house. She wrote in the local newspaper as well as for the Jackson radio station, before her stories began to appear in magazines like The Southern Review, Atlantic Monthly or The New Yorker.

Historical Backgrounder
The Birth of Eudora Eudora's rich history spans more than a decade - a decade in which the program has evolved into a robust, industrial-strength desktop program that allows users to manage and control their email through an intuitive interface with powerful features. Originally developed as a freeware product by Internet pioneer Steve Dorner in 1988, Eudora broke new ground by combining the best attributes of various emerging email technologies. The program did not spring from a traditional center of high-tech innovation such as the Silicon Valley, but rather, from a college campus in the nation's heartland. Eudora was developed by Steve Dorner at the University of Illinois, where Mosaic was also eventually developed. Dorner was a computer programmer working on TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/Internet protocol) applications and servers for the computer science department on the Urbana-Champaign campus. This was his first exposure to Internet protocols, chiefly file transfer protocol (ftp) and telnet, before he moved on to developing "ph" for Net directories. After growing bored with building directories, Dorner turned his attention to email. Although electronic messaging was still in its infancy, Dorner realized that an elegant email system could greatly enhance and facilitate communications among students and faculty on campus.

The story and its analyses are not mirror-opposites of each other. They are not reflections, either one. Criticism indeed is an art, as a story is, but only the story is to some degree a vision; there is no explanation outside fiction for what the writer is learning to do.

April 13, 2004
John Bayne, an Atlanta book collector whose well-researched essays on Eudora Welty appear frequently in the Eudora Welty Newsletter , recently donated his extensive collection of Welty books and association items to Georgia State University's Pullen Library. This event, made possible by the generosity of longtime Eudora Welty Newsletter benefactors Pat and Howard McHenry, will occur on the anniversary of Welty's April 13 birthday. The Bayne collection, containing more than 200 significant Welty items and appraised at nearly $35,000, includes twenty-five books signed by the author and several signed or inscribed by Welty and others. The collection includes nearly all of the limited edition publications of Welty's fiction or essays and numerous edited or critical texts also signed by editors or authors. Mr. Bayne said he chose Georgia State as the home for his collection because of the presence of the Eudora Welty Newsletter and the regular offering of courses in the GSU English Department that include the writer's work, especially the Welty graduate seminar offered in alternate years by

As the storm passes eerily over and her smaller brother yells in his sleep, Josie floats through her dream-life childhood, effortlessly conjuring visions of the season now passing toy tattoos of flower baskets and Athenian ruins transferred onto her arms and legs, live June bugs on threads, the fascinating golden-haired teenage neighbor, Cornella, in her high-heeled shoes. The morning after the storm, Josie finds a wet scrap of paper outside a torn bit of ardent love letter with Cornella's name scribbled on it, which Josie hides in her "most secret place":
