In the opening volume of the sequel trilogy to The Death of the Necromancer , Martha Wells further fleshes out the world she introduced in that Nebula nominated novel. While the events take place in the same gothic, magic-laden world of Ile-Rien, The Wizard Hunters strongly stands on its own as the initial tome of the series, The Fall of Ile Rien. To open the novel, Wells introduces the readers to protagonist Tremaine Valiarde, a young woman at odds with herself: "...Tremaine was trying to find a way to kill herself that would bring in a verdict of natural causes..." This is not the typical protagonist, nor is this the typical fantasy novel. While there are dark creatures, magic and a struggle against a seemingly evil enemy, Wells has laid out a world that is both recognizable and set apart from the one in which we live and more importantly, apart from many that readers of fantasy have visited before. While the novel is set primarily in the nation of Ile Rien, many of the surrounding and neighboring cities and states have familiar sounding names such as Lodun and Vienne. This world is similar to ours in that there are things like automobiles and wireless communicators, similar to other fantasies with dark creatures and magic is fully at work, but set apart from both through the amalgamation of all of these elements into an appealing and richly developed world.

The real star of Martha Wells's third novel, The Death of the Necromancer , is the incredibly detailed city she permits her characters to inhabit. Seemingly an amalgam of Victorian London and eighteenth century Paris with a soupçon of magic thrown in, Vienne comes alive as a complex city with a long history. Into this background, Wells places a Sherlock Holmes character (Inspector Ronsarde) and a Moriarty figure (Nicholas Valiarde), but then turns the tables by telling the tale from Moriarty/Valiarde's point of view. The plot seems relatively simple. Nicholas is attempting to avenge the execution of his foster father, Edouard Viller, who was framed for being a necromancer several years before the novel opens. To achieve his goal, Nicholas has become the godfather of Vienne crime. On one of the last heists before turning his attention to Montesq, the villainous nobleman responsible for Viller's death, Nicholas runs across Doctor Octave, a spiritualist who may or may not be using necromancy, but is definitely using some of Viller's apparatus. Nicholas and his accomplices get sidetracked by investigating Doctor Octave and the possibility he is a necromancer.

Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Martha Wells
This is a brief discussion of Martha Wells and, of course, of some books by Martha Wells.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Wells; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Wells tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Wells worthy; in sum, to help you rank Wells (and the works by Wells listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

Saturday, February 8, 2003 Obituary: Martha Wells, teacher Loving guidance extended to all
By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Mrs. Wells

Martha Elaine Wells, a retired Cincinnati Public Schools teacher, died Monday in Winter Park, Fla. The Bond Hill resident was 83. During a career that spanned more than 30 years, Mrs. Wells strove to instill a sense of responsibility and a love of learning in her students and in children in her neighborhood, according to her daughter, Dorothy Wells of Amberley Village. The mother of six and aunt to the children of her 15 siblings, Mrs. Wells told funny stories about her own life and taught them history. She loved to laugh and had a knack for remembering names. While she was a teacher, she also worked as a clerk at Becker's Drug Store in Walnut Hills, where she was called "The Becker Lady," for 19 years. She delighted in seeing her former students in the store and keeping up with their lives. Mrs. Wells was born in Byhalia, Miss., on Christmas Day 1919 - the 15th of 16 children born to Will and Alice Albright.

The Death of the Necromancer
by Martha Wells
The Death of the Necromancer is an intelligent fantasy set in the fictional city of Vienne. It takes place two hundred years after the events of Martha Wells' first novel, The Element of Fire , but it is an entirely independent story. Nicholas Valiarde is a master criminal obsessed with destroying the aristocrat who framed his foster father for the capital crime of necromancy. His carefully laid plans for revenge begin to go awry when he is attacked by a ghoul while burgling a Duchess's cellars. The attack seems to be connected to mysterious corpses that are turning up in the river. Dead bodies are common in Vienne, but these bear gruesome evidence that someone is practicing necromancy in the city. Necromancy has been outlawed in Vienne for centuries, but sorcery is common, and Nicholas's mysterious enemies soon turn deadly magic against him. Nicholas's close-mouthed manner and established history make him a difficult character to warm up to, but he is surrounded by likeable companions with checkered pasts. They include a disgraced cavalry officer, a popular stage actress, and a sorcerer who would be formidable if only he weren't tanked to the gills on opium. Their chief enemy is Inspector Ronsarde, a thinly disguised Sherlock Holmes figure complete with Dr. Watson. Martha Wells marvelously depicts Vienne as a gently crumbling city, lit by gaslight and shrouded by fog. Its underside is shown as much detail as its surface, as Nicholas pursues his enemies through the theater district and the houses of the

I'm not sure what book the jacketflaps on City of Bones describe. It sounds like a cross between The Phoenix Guards and the Arabian Nights, and I really would like to read it someday, because it sounds like fun. But while I wouldn't describe City of Bones as "rollicking," I'm certainly glad that it happened to be tucked into this particular dustjacket, because it's a Very Good Read. Charisat is a tiered city, in which the richer you are, the higher you live. The closest things to law and order are the Trade Inspectors, who wield big sticks, and Warders, who wield Mystical Powers. Khat is a lower-Tier dealer of relics, artifacts that predate the ancient holocaust that turned the region (and, presumably, most of the planet) into a desert Waste. When a First Tier Warder hires him to guide her to an already thoroughly picked- over ancient building in the nearby Waste, he ends up involved in a search for stolen relics. Everyone, of course, is after these particular relics, and the quest turns into a panicked race to Save the World. Post-holocaust novels of every stripe generally irritate me, but

Using magic, the mysterious off-worlders Gardier has conquered Ile-Rien though the embattled Rienish wizards have learned how to open an inter-world portal. Another defeated foe of the Gardier, the Syprians, fear magic due to its misuse by evil wizards. Their Chosen One, Giliead, is resistant to most magic. Meanwhile Tremaine Valiarde knows that the soul of the powerful wizard Arisilde rests inside a magical sphere that is the last hope that the Rienish wizards have to defeat Gardier magic. She and her fellow exiles on Syprian pull a passenger liner through the portal that upsets the locals and bring them to the attention of malevolent wizards who want the sphere. To ease the minds of the anti-magic local populace about her motives, Tremaine marries Gilead's brother Ilias, a freedom fighter who has killed several evil wizards. The intrepid Tremaine leads a raid on the Gardier, but she and others become trapped inside an enemy airship that a wizard transports from this orb to what she assumes is the enemy's homeworld with no exit for her and her allies.

The off world Gardier use powerful magic to invade the land of Ile-Rien. The off-world military are winning on all fronts defeating the natives at sea, on the land, and in the air. Unless something is done quickly, the people of Ile-Rien will become enslaved. A magical artifact attached to Tremaine Valiarde transports her and two sorceress to the Isle of Storms. They meet the Syrneiese warrior Ilias and Giliead who have come to the island to see if an evil wizard has taken up residence there. The two groups team up when the Gardier, who have an outpost in a huge cave on the island, captures them. Working together, they escape and go to the homeland of Ilias and Giliead and then back to Ile-Rien to get an army together that will destroy the Gardier outpost and subsequently the means of traveling between the two worlds. Book one of the Fall of Ile-Rien is a fantastic opening installment in what looks to be a great fantasy epic. The heroine, a potential suicide victim, finds she has something to live for as she becomes a freedom fighter intent on saving two worlds from Gardier domination. Martha Wells is an excellent world builder, a writer who makes the audience believes that the Gardier and the two worlds they want to conquer actually exist.

ultimately frame the evil Count Montesq, the man responsible for the death
of Nicholas' foster father. But just as his plans for Montesq's final downfall are coming to fruition, a mysterious spiritualist named Dr. Octave has appeared on the scene, seeming to be far too aware of the Valiarde/Donatien connection. Is it just coincidence or has Montesq caught scent of the scheme and decided to act? Or is it more insidious? Could Octave be involved with the strange appearances of mutilated bodies that keep cropping up around the city? Bodies obviously used in the illegal arts of necromancy. Anyway he cares to look at it, Nicholas can't afford to look the other way. The Octave problem must be looked after, no matter the cost. This is a real entertaining, action/adventure/mystery/fantasy story, set in

Review of THE WIZARD HUNTERS by Martha Wells (see her website)
BOOK ONE OF THE FALL OF ILE-RIEN
EOS, 2003 Tremaine Valiarde had just about given upon her dying country and her life, when one of her guardians appears demanding the magical sphere that her father had entrusted to her. But the sphere will only work for Tremaine, which gets her drafted into a secret research project to find some way to fight the powerful air armadas that have bombed the nation so close to defeat. The sphere sends Tremaine and a small group into an alternative realitywhere wizard hunters battle all forms of magic. Unfortunately, Tremaine and her group are quickly seen as wizards. Fortunately, the Gardier, the mysterious invaders, are causing problems in the new world as welland are seen as worse wizards. Working with a couple of handsome natives, Tremaine escapes the Gardier and develops an alliance with the population of this worldincluding a god. But the sphere remains a mysterycapable of doing things it shouldn't be able to do. Somehow, Tremaine has to get back to her own worldin time to save it from complete destruction by the Gardier. THE WIZARD HUNTERS opens strongly, but sags badly in the middle as Tremaine and company thrash through their escapes from the Gardier. I would have thought that the ILE-RIEN scientists would be more interested in the strange magical sphere and researched it more completely, but that doesn't seem to have happened.

WHEEL OF THE INFINITE by Martha Wells
EOS, July 2000 Maskelle, sometimes-Voice of the Adversary, is returning to Duvalpore after years in exile. Their society, indeed their entire world's existance, depends on faithful completion of a series of rituals, but this year, the ritual is being distorted by an unknown force. Only the power of the Adversary can overcome this attack on the fabric of existance. Yet Maskelle has already admitted to failing. How can she preserve the perfection of the Wheel of the Infinite? In WHEEL OF THE INFINITE, Martha Wells (see more BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by Wells) has created a fascinating alternate universe. The belief structures, centered around ancestoral figures who speak through voices, a Zen-like oneness with the universe, and a Palace/Temple system that actually does protect and preserve the universe, is fascinating. Maskelle is a tragically torn figure. She knows better than to trust herself, but she can trust no one else. When the ceremony does occur, she and a small group of priests and the nobility find themselves thrown into a parallel universe that has destroyed itself and is anxious to take over the world of Duvalpore. Ultimately, Maskelle must confront both the powerful undead citizens of the destroyed universe and the beliefs that preserve her own universe. Only through her understanding of rightness does the universe have an opportunity to mend itself. This was a hard book to put down. Wells' writing is a pleasure to read and Maskelle, in particular, is a powerful and complex character.

From her dreams of an eerie, inhuman city abandoned in the midst of devastation and other clues, Maskelle learns that the Voices have mysterious, magical opponents who have created a Wheel of their own in order to alter reality to benefit themselves; the Celestial Emperor himself has been duped by confederates of the invaders; and the Adversary itself might not be entirely sane. Maskelle and her companions cum allies, in their battle against the strange insurgents from another world, encounter murderous water spirits, possessed corpses, cursed puppets, murdered priests, magical assassins and the scheming court favorite Lady Marada, Wells wordsmithing skills making these odd ingredients blend together into an enthralling narrative.
