Cornwall Wells We took the long train ride from Llandudno Junction to Bristol through eastern Wales, then picked up a car for our explorations of Southwestern England. It was a long travel day, so we chose nearby Tintern, in the scenic Wye Valley in southeastern Wales, for a short overnight stay. William Wordsworth, that old Lake poet, was impressed with the bucolic Wye valley, writing of it in 1798, How oft, in spirit, have I turned to thee,

How often has my spirit turned to thee!

I, for one, wanted to see what he was on about ... and found the Wye valley to be every bit as beautiful two centuries later as he claimed. up-Wye at dawn from our bedroom Well, I'm afraid it was a little TOO sylvan for my travelling companions, and so after a rainy day doing laundry in Monmouth and checking out the Millennium Maze at Whitchurch, we headed back across the Severn and south to the little cathedral city of Wells, where the weather thankfully improved enough for us to walk to dinner. a hedge Maze along the Wye

The garden feeds the bishop and his household and supplies the buttery that serves lovely organic lunches in the undercroft. Several times now we've seen how a sustained spiritual community has been the focal point for a development of great beauty and persistence.

Wells Gray - A Canadian odyssey
By Linda Geddes AS late baby boomers my husband and I long ago decided growing old gracefully was not an option. However, needing something more challenging than wearing purple with a red hat that doesn't go, we found ourselves on a seven-day hike of the Wells Gray traverse from Trophy Mountain to Battle Mountain in the Canadian Rockies. The look on Ken's face said it all as the American trundled out dressed in designer gear with a suitcase on wheels and an enormous bag of toiletries. Ken gently reminded him we were going hiking in the wilderness and he would have to carry all his possessions on his back for seven days. He got a spare rucksack out of the van and went through the mountain of clothes, shoes and books, putting most of them aside. The lad looked on in horror and squeaked "How can I manage with just one shirt?" "Don't worry, we'll all smell the same by the end of the week!" said Ken, as he threw out a hairdryer and vibrating hairbrush. "There's no electricity in these huts" he warned and turned his attention to the bag of toiletries saying: "Just take the bar of soap. There are no showers, just a small washroom with a sink you have to stand in to wash." We though the poor lad was going to faint. We picked up the remainder of our group, a Canadian woman, a Dutchman, another English woman and a very fit looking German fraulein and set off for the trailhead. At this point the young lad looked nervously at the gradient of the hill we were about to climb and asked: "Is it far?"

CREYGHTONE, KEN AND KIDDER
Dean Ralph Bathurst was appointed in 1670 when Creyghtone became bishop. Dr. Bathurst was a man of eminence, President of Trinity College Oxford, chaplain to the king, fellow of the Royal Society and one of the foremost scientists of his day. He was a long serving dean and saw four bishops come and go. Restoration both of the fabric of the cathedral and of the spirit took place during his tenure.
The saintly bishop Thomas Ken was appointed in 1685, the year of Monmouth's rebellion when puritan soldiers again wrought havoc in the cathedral and turned part of it into a stable. Some were finally imprisoned in the cloisters .The work of restoration had to be done all over again. Ken himself was for a time imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing with six others to accept the repeal of the Act of Uniformity. He later refused to take the oath of allegiance to William and Mary because James II had not formally abdicated. He was forced to retire to Frome and is best remembered for his prayers and hymns and his charity to the poor.
Bishop Kidder who succeeded him was killed during the great storm of 1703 when two chimneystacks in the palace fell on the bishop and his wife asleep in bed. This same storm wrecked the Eddystone lighthouse and blew in part of the great west window in Wells.

middot; Technology Department received donation of computers valued at $346,000.
Our direction is clear. Students are a priority in Perquimans County. Our school district is gaining recognition throughout the state of North Carolina. Dr. Mike Ward's opening comments at a Quarterly Superintendent's Meeting was "Chairman Lee has visited school districts all over the state. Of all the places he has been...he says that Perquimans County is the best kept secret in North Carolina." Thanks for all you do to help our students learn and achieve.

    London Mayor Election
The European Elections are not the only joys we have to look forward to on June 10 (in fact the Euro Elections will provide very little excitement until June 13th when the votes are counted, but there goes). There are also local and London mayoral elections. The mayoral election has received relatively little coverage because it is taken as read that Ken Livingstone will be re-elected. While I think he probably will win, it isn't necessarily quite so clear cut. The problem is that the polls didn't prove to be a very good indicator for the mayoral election last time, and probably won't this time and it's for good reason. By choosing to only include those who say they are 60% or 70% or 80% likely to vote we can predict results making various different assumptions about turnout. The difficulty comes when we want to predict the results of an election where we expect a very low turnout, especially when the expected turnout is below the number of people who say they are certain to vote. Half the sample say they are certain to vote, but realistically we know only two-thirds of those people will vote. There is, however, no way of working out which part of that sample are the ones who will end up voting.

We have long enjoyed defining the American character through our literary heroes. We prefer rough-hewn men, resolute in their own vision of the world, often at odds stuffy conformity, comfortable with their reprobate attitude. Huck Finn exemplifies this allegiance to the rebellious, misunderstood, action-based hero. It matters little if this figure has stretched or broken the law; his illegal behavior usually results from altercations with ignorant, small-minded or prejudiced authority figure...

This picture is of the SILVA FAMILY, late nineteenth century. It shows a formal setting, and probably dates to 1895 or 1896. The father is Joaquim Silva, the wife is Frances Clara (Cordoza) Silva, and their four children are a son, Manuel, and three daughters, Caroline "Aunt Carrie," Helen (Nana Wells, my great garandmother) and Mary "Aunt Mae." Joaquim and Frances Clara, called Francesca, emigrated separately from the Portugese Azore Islands; certainly from Saint Michael, possible one came from Faial. They settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Dot Wells Ryan, born in 1908, knew both of her Silva grandparents. Dot once told me that Grampa Silva had a hole in the flesh of his back, into which a young child like Dot could insert her fist up to the wrist. (!)
