THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW U.S. Musical Show One of television's most enduring musical series, The Lawrence Welk Show , was first seen on network TV as a summer replacement program in 1955. Although the critics were not impressed, Mr. Welk's show went on to last an astonishing 27 years. His format was simple: easy-listening music, what he referred to as "champagne music," and a "family" of wholesome musicians, singers, and dancers. The show ran on ABC for the first 16 years and was known in the early years as The Dodge Dancing Party. ABC canceled the show in 1971, not because of lack of popularity, but because it was "too old" to please advertisers. ABC's cancellation did little to stop Welk, who lined up more than 200 independent stations for a successful syndicated network of his own. Part of Welk's success can be attributed to his relationship with viewers. He meticulously compiled a "fever chart" which tallied pro and con comments received from viewers' letters. Performers with favorable comments became more visible on the show. In this way, the viewer also played an important role in his "family" of regulars. There were many show favorites throughout the years including the Lennon Sisters, who were brought to his attention by his son Lawrence Jr. who was dating Dianne Lennon in 1955. Other favorites included the Champagne Ladies (Alice Lon and Norma Zimmer); accordionist Myron Floren, who was also the assistant conductor; singer-pianist Larry Hooper; singers Joe Feeney and Guy Hovis; violinist Aladdin; dancers Bobby Burgess and Barbara Boylan; and Welk's daughter-in-law, Tanya Falan Welk.

a Caroline Rhodes mystery
by Mary V. Welk
Caroline Rhodes has no idea that she'll be walking into an emergency room marked for murder when she agrees to return to Ascension Medical Center for the summer. But two days after she arrives at the Chicago suburban hospital, a fellow employee is found dead in bed, smothered by a lavender silk pillow. Nothing can stop Caroline from investigating when a second death results in the arrest of the ER's nurse manager. Determined to clear her best friend, Caroline forms a strange pact with an aging Mafia boss, then calls on her buddies from the little town of Rhineburg for help in hunting down the killer. "This is a great addition to a pleasant and well-done series."
"An entertaining amateur sleuth tale starring a strong but vulnerable heroine."

SUSAN McBRIDE -
MARY WELK -
I started writing A Deadly Little Christmas late in 1992. The plot came from a story I'd written twenty years before and tucked away in my desk. It might have never seen the light of day again except for the fact that my father died in June 1992 while a patient in the hospital unit where I worked. His illness was never really diagnosed by the doctors. And though I poured over his chart looking for clues for his decline, I came up with nothing. It was extremely depressing, and it plagued me for months. I began writing DEADLY just to get my thoughts out in the open. Caroline Rhodes' depression over the death of her husband and her inability to prevent that death mirrored my own feelings about my father. Writing the book served to heal some of my own wounds, but then the story took on a life of its own.
I began to think it might just be publishable, so I sent the manuscript to a professional editor who worked with me through six rewrites. In 1996, I entered it in the Malice Domestic First Novel Competition and the Hemingway First Novel Competition. It won neither, but was a finalist in the Hemingway contest. I also received a letter from the woman who had judged DEADLY for Malice Domestic. She said it was a great manuscript and urged me not to change a word and to enter the competition again in 1997. I planned to do just that.

LAWRENCE WELK: GOD BLESS AMERICA, one of the most dramatic patriotic music specials ever produced for public television, presented nationally March 1, 2003. How did you get your start as a writer? Mary
I've been writing since I was a teenager but, as a career, I'd have to say it began in 1996 when I sent my first novel to two writing competitions. I'd originally written the book when I was 22 years old, while I was in nursing school. It was pretty amateurish so I put the manuscript away but, because the plot always intrigued me, I resurrected it 24 years later. While I rewrote the entire story, changed all of the characters, setting, and dialogue, I knew the initial plot had merit. After six revisions, I was finally satisfied and submitted the manuscript to the Hemingway First Novel Competition and to the Malice Domestic First Novel Competition under the title Four To Go My manuscript ended up as a finalist in the Hemingway competition, the only mystery in the group. It didn't win in the Malice Domestic competition, but I received a lovely letter from the judge who'd read it, urging me to leave the manuscript just as it was and submit it again in '97. I was thrilled the book did as well as it did, but it took another two years before it was finally published under the title

  • Sharon Schulz-Elsing 's early exposure to The Cat in the Hat and daily newspapers begat a lifelong obsession with all things written. She spent so much college tuition and time on literature, writing and grammar classes that she fell into cum laude journalism and English degrees from a small but distinguished Midwestern school of liberal arts. An nine-year tour of duty in the bookselling trenches yielded a lifetime's worth of experience in the book industry she mostly loves and occasionally despises. As editor, she shoulders the blame for everything on Curled Up With a Good Book ; as a contributing reviewer, she at least gets to take some of the credit, which she faithfully shares with a longsuffering husband, two daughters, a wicked, wicked mongrel cat and the ghost of her dog.

Mary Lou Metzger
Singer, Dancer, Actress... Versatile Star! Biography reprinted from the Musical Family News, Spring 1994 When you think of Mary Lou Metzger you think of springtime and laughter and light-heartedness and grace, and she is all of that. Not so apparent is the self-discipline, dedication, and determination that mark her life. Aside from her great talent, those are the qualities that brought her from children's shows in Philadelphia to a top spot in the most enduring and legendary television musical show of all time. Her career actually got under way when she was 4 years old. "My mom gave me dancing lessons," recalled Mary Lou as we visited over lunch in a restaurant recently. "And I was hooked! I just loved dancing and everything about it." MUSIC MAN Her teacher Jane Burnett, who had been in "42nd Street" with Dick Powell, instantly recognized that this elfin little girl with the huge hazel eyes was a major talent. Before long Mary Lou was performing in recitals and shows in the Philadelphia area where the Metzger family lived. By the time she was ten, she had become so proficient that she was chosen for the road show version of the musical, "Music Man." Her mother Helen accompanied her and for the next ten months they toured the country, playing 113 performances. "It was a wonderful experience," said Mary Lou. "You know how most kids love to make-believe? Well, I had a chance to make-believe every day!" She missed six months of school in order to make the trip, but when she and her mother returned to Philadelphia, Mary Lou a straight A student completed the make-up work in 2 and a half months.
