a Bush.

"Eagle or Sun?" is a collection of prose poems by the great Mexican poet Octavio Paz. Several of the short pieces represent a sort of hybrid form between the poem and the essay; others seem to represent a melding of the poem and the short story. Although Paz can be obscure, and even somewhat indulgent, at times, "Eagle or Sun?" is marked by flashes of brilliance which make it an important piece of 20th century literature. Some of the book's highlights included section X of "The Poet's Works," ...

It also includes important later works of Borges, Nightmares and Blindness (transcriptions of two lectures from 1977).His own worst nightmare involves discovering the King of Norway, with his sword and his dog, sitting at the foot of Borges' bed. What Is Happening in America?
By Eliot Weinberger This article was written for "Vorwarts," the official magazine of the German Social Democratic Party. 1 June 2003 In the Western democracies in the last fifty years, we have grown accustomed to governments whose policies on specific issues may be good or bad, but which essentially institute incremental changes to the status quo. The major exceptions have been Thatcher and Reagan, but even their programs of dismantling systems of social welfare seem, in retrospect, mild compared to what is happening in the United States under George Bush or more exactly, the ruling junta that tells Bush what to do and say. It is unquestionably the most radical government in modern American history, one whose ideology and actions have become so pervasive, and are so unquestionably mirrored by the mass media here, that the population seems to have forgotten what "normal" is. George Bush is the first unelected President of the United States, installed by a right-wing Supreme Court in a kind of judicial coup d'etat. He is the first to actively subvert one of the pillars of American democracy: the separation of church and state. There are now daily prayer meetings and Bible study groups in every branch of the government, and religious organizations are being given funds to take over educational and welfare programs that have always been the domain of the state. Bush is the first president to invoke the specific "Jesus Christ" rather than an ecumenical "God," and he has surrounded himself with evangelical Christians, including his Attorney General, who attends a church where he talks in tongues.

New York: the day after 12 September 2001 : I write in the limbo between the action and the reaction, knowing that the reactions and revelations to come will have already turned these words into a clipping from an old newspaper at the moment they first see print. This, then, is merely the record of a day, some notes from a temporal and emotional limbo. And it is written from a geographical limbo, for where I live in New York, two or three kilometers north of the World Trade Center, is not the ruined war zone that is appearing on television, but a kind of quarantine zone. South of Canal Street, the buildings have been evacuated, telephones and electricity are out, and the air is thick with rancid smoke and dust. Between Canal and 14th Street, which includes my neighborhood of Greenwich Village, only residents are allowed to enter, passing through a kind of Checkpoint Charlie, manned by National Guardsmen wearing camouflage suits and carrying rifles, slowly scrutinizing identification cards. There are no cars, no mail, no newspapers; stores are closed; the telephones work erratically. At least the air is clear. The wind is blowing south - everyone has remarked how yesterday and today were among the most beautiful days of the year - while friends downwind in Brooklyn describe their neighborhoods as Pompeiis of ash. It is, of course, impossible to know what the effects of yesterday's horror will be; whether it will permanently alter the national psyche (if there is one) or merely recede as yet another bundle of images from yet another media spectacle. This is clearly the first event since the rise of the omnipotence of mass media that is larger than the media, that the media cannot easily absorb and tame. If the media do succeed, national life, beyond the personal tragedies, will continue in its semi-hallucinatory state of continual manufactured imagery. If they fail, something profound may indeed change.

Science Professional Reviews Los Angeles Times Book Review "Paz the poet intoxicates, Paz the thinker ensure that that this is not at the cost of reason and fairness. he intoxicates with reason." New York Times Book Review The Spanish title of 'In Light of India' is 'Vislumbres de la India', difficult to translate perhaps, meaning glimpses dimly seen, as in twilight. But, while it is true that the reader who knows India even a little is left wondering about certain omissions (what about the worship of the elephant god Ganesha, for instance, and the dreaded goddess Kali?), the essays in this ambitious booktranslated by Eliot Weinberger, San Francisco Chronicle Book Review "[A] delectable fusion of ideas and images about India, served by a truly consummate cultural gourmet. Anyone with a taste for India, Mexico and Paz is sure to come away both satisfied and hungry for more." Publisher's Note In 1951 I was living in Paris. I had a modest job at the Mexican embassy, having arrived six years earlier, in December 1945. The mediocrity of my position perhaps explains why, after two or three years, I had not been transferred to another post, as is the diplomatic custom. My superiors had forgotten me, and I secretly thanked them. I was trying to write and, most of all, I was exploring the city that is probably the most beautiful example of the genius of our civilization: solid without heaviness, huge without gigantism, tied to the earth but with a desire for flight.

Main February 03, 2003 Eliot Weinberger: Statement for "Poetry is News" conference [I've just got this one dropped into my inbox. It is probably the most cogent, but also willfully controversial, statement I have read on the situation of poets right now, especially his assessment of the three options for creative intervention. It is the third, poets turning to prose, that has most inspired the creation of this site that and the fact that Bush's speech writer is an evangelical Christian I am both pessimistic and optimistic about what's happening and briefly, or not so briefly, I'd like to say why: First, I take the word "politics" in a very narrow sense: that is, how governments are run. And I take the word "government" to mean the organized infliction or alleviation of suffering among one's own people and among other peoples. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan was completely dismantling the social programs of the New Deal and Johnson's Great Society creating the millions of homeless, the 25% of American children who live in poverty, the obscene polarization of wealth, and so on. (And the poets, typically, were only moved to speak up when he cut the NEA budget.) Clinton might have had a more compassionate public face, but essentially the political center had shifted so far right that today the Democratic party is to the right of any European conservative party, and the Republicans just slightly to the left of a European national front party. We may never live to see an American president as left-wing as Jacques Chirac.

Main February 14, 2003 Eliot Weinberger: Lincoln Center [This came flying into my inbox this morning see Weinberger's earlier commentary in the archives. Not quite sure if this is going to spark a flame war the kind of thing I don't want on Circulars but nonetheless, it pertains to the way poets are engaging in the anti-war effort and is thus important.] Why is the "Poems Not Fit for the White House" event at Lincoln Center a benefit (with $100 orchestra seats) for Not In Our Name (NION)? NION was founded a few months ago by leaders of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP). The RCP is a nut-group that defends Pol Pot, the Shining Path in Peru, the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the massacre in Tiananmen Square. NION is their attempt as has been done in the past by various Lyndon LaRouche spinoffs to insert themselves into more mainstream opposition politics. NION has been instrumental in organizing antiwar demonstrations, but otherwise only exists to propagate the NION statement and the "Pledge of Resistance," which is meant to be recited (at considerable length) in unison by large groups. The NION statement has a few strange sentences, but generally confines itself to opinions held by most with antiwar and anti-Bush sentiments. It was signed by many honorable people, and was notable as the first widespread newspaper petition. Whether this petition should continue to be propagated is another question.
