Vomit s

Out of sheer boredom, Kafka notes in his diary, he washed his hands five times in a row. He lived in the age before MTV. Now the bored, the depressed, the tired, the blank, and the slightly ill can stare at an unending series of rapidly flashing, strange and arresting images, with people who are far more attractive than those who show up in one's dreams. (Why bother to sleep?) Yesterday's transgression is today's decor: MTV is Un Chien Andalou at the speed of light, at a corporate budget: a cabinet of curiosities the size of Xanadu. Out of sheer boredom, and with clean hands, I turned on MTV twice in recent months, and both times was disappointed to find that the staccato dreamtime of the videos had been replaced by linear and conventional programs. The first was a comedy show, featuring an unremarkably pretty young woman as a lawyer. She walks into a conference room of suited yuppies, male and female, sitting at a long polished table, and immediately vomits at such length and so copiously that it covers the entire table. Unfazed, her colleagues proceed to pluck out pieces with their fingers which they identify as the remains of certain dishes from various elegant restaurants. (We watched no more that afternoon.) double entendre Seduction of the Innocent The more complicated explanation for this manifestation of the half- digested is that ever since youth detached itself from adult society, shortly after the Second World War, and became a separate but parallel culture, it has been a reliable indicator of the society at large. Its exaggerated responses and actions are not only canaries in our coal mines, but often extreme versions of what are or will soon be norms. Vomit has become an adolescent preoccupation, not only as entertainment, but as obsession: a prevailing psychological disorder among teenage girls in the technological countries. Bulimia is a response that is both violent and reasonable: In this society, what else can one do but throw up?

The forest
When in Angola, do not enter the forest of the Cokwe at night. For there Muhangi, an old man, once a great hunter, runs through the woods screaming. Kanyali, in the form of a girl, chases wanderers with a termite hill on his head. Kapwakala, a child who lives in the holes of trees, rustles an apron made of hide. There is Ciyeye, a bonfire that walks, and Kalulu, a small red child that whizzes buzzing through the air. Samutambieka, an unknown animal with one foot, one eye, one ear, and one tooth, carries a club red with the blood of humans. And worst of all is Nguza, a large eye that squats on a tree branch and stares.
Blue eyes
I was in a village on the Amazon, waiting day after day for a boat to get me out. I slept in the one place that let rooms; switching on the light at night, the ceiling was covered with hundreds of transparent salamanders, motionless and upside-down. The one place to eat was a windowless shack with an unlit kitchen and two metal tables outside on the dirt road that was the only street. I sat. In one late afternoon of sitting, an elderly man came down the road and spoke to me. " Sprechen sie Deutsch?

  • "From modernist poetry he has learned, as an essayist, about collage and the need for concision and exactitude. He has taken to heart poetics' fluid conflictions between the public and the personal, its conflation of the contemporary and the archaic, and its taste for the encyclopedic. (...) Many of the essays from the first two books, Works on Paper and Outside Stories , are not essays as we know them, but rather dismantlements and explorations of the essay form." -

An excerpt from
New York After
by Eliot Weinberger
New York: Four Weeks After (Shrapnel) October 9, 2001: After ordering the bombing of Afghanistan on October 7, George Bush went out on the lawn to play with his dog and practice his golf swings. Since September 11, he has maintained his normal schedule of working until 6 p.m., four days a week, and leaving at noon on Fridays for long weekends at his ranch or the Camp David retreat. Never has an American president in a crisis looked so rested. The original name of the mission, "Infinite Justice" was changed when Muslim clerics complained that only Allah may dispense infinite justice. The new name, "Enduring Freedom," was meant to proclaim that American freedom endures, but it now means that the Afghans must endure American freedom. We are bombing Afghanistan in reprisal because it is believed that the terrorists who attacked the Trade Center and the Pentagon were housed and trained for their mission in Afghanistan. There is, as yet, no evidence for this assertion. What has been proven, however, is that the terrorists were housed and trained for their mission in Florida. Military reprisals for terrorist attacks (Libya, 1986; the Sudan and Afghanistan, 1998) killed civilians, strengthened anti-American sentiments, evidently did nothing to stop terrorism, and probably added new sympathizers to their ranks. Terrorism is a criminal and a not a military activity; it cannot be erased, but it can be lessened with preventive security measures and with more attentive investigation, including the sharing of information among nations. For example, the 1993 bombing of the Trade Center might have been prevented if the FBI had translated the boxes of letters, documents, and tapes of conversations they already had in their possession. But these were in a foreign language, and the G-men couldn't be bothered.
