on books from The Atlantic Monthly. From Atlantic Unbound Flashbacks: "The Cruel Wit of Evelyn Waugh" (April 11, 2003) Articles over fifty years trace the evolution of the bitter and controversial master of British farce. Books The Permanent Adolescent His vices made Evelyn Waugh a king of comedy and of tragedy by Christopher Hitchens ven as George Orwell was dying, in 1949, he continued to wrestle with the last book review to which the life of the freelance hack had condemned him. Dogged to the final deadline, he also made some more-general notes about that novel's author. The book was Brideshead Revisited , and the author was Orwell's exact contemporary, whose centennial is also being observed this year. We now have Orwell's fragmented, unfinished comments on Evelyn Waugh, and they certainly infuse me with a strong wish to have been able to read the completed essay. This manuscript peters out after a few more shrewd paragraphs, and is succeeded by some cryptic notes on Brideshead Analyse "Brideshead Revisited." (Note faults due to being written in first person.) Studiously detached attitude. Not puritanical. Priests not superhuman ...

and
P. G. Wodehouse
Evelyn Waugh is perhaps most known to Wodehouse fans as the person whose glowing review graces the back of the Penguin editions of the Wodehouse books. There he is quoted as saying ``Mr Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in.'' Here are some more things that Mr Waugh said about Mr Wodehouse.
"I am confident that Mr Wodehouse's characters will live. It is the half-real characters of the ordinary popular novelist who disappear. Literary characters may survive either through being so real and round that they are true of any age and race, or through being so stylized that they carry their own world with them. [...] of the second [group] are Mr Wodehouse's characters. They live in their own universe like the characters of a fairy story. [...] Mr Wodehouse's characters are purely and essentially literary characters. We do not concern ourselves with the economic implications of their position; we are not sceptical about their quite astonishing celibacy. We do not expect them to grow any older [...] We are not interested in how they would `react to changing social conditions' [...] The `Drones,' with its piano, swimming baths, sugar throwing, and borrowing and lending of fivers, has no conceivable resemblance to any London club; its Beans and Crumpets even wear a distinguishing archaic costume of spats [...]; their language has never been heard on human lips. Their desperate, transitory, romantic passions are unconnected with the hope or fear of procreation; age in their world is usually cantankerous, extreme youth, obnoxious; they all live, year after year, in their robust middle twenties; their only sickness is an occasional hangover. It is a world that cannot become dated because it has never existed." [1939]

Evelyn Waugh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Evelyn Waugh, as photographed in 1940 by Carl Van Vechten Evelyn Arthur St. John Waugh October 28 April 10 ) was an English comic satirical and tragic novelist Born in London , he left Oxford University Hertford College ) in with a third-class degree. He taught at a private school in Wales and in attempted suicide by swimming out to sea, but was unsuccessful, turning back after being stung by a jellyfish (this is narrated by himself in his autobiographical work A little learning His subsequent career as a journalist was truncated as a direct result of his literary success with his first novel, Decline and Fall . Although his racy novels of the "bright young things" in England made his reputation, he was a profoundly conservative writer who also had great success with more sombre works like Brideshead Revisited In his pre- World War II novels he makes a strong criticism of his contemporary English society, especially aristocracy and higher middle classes , using acerbic humour and presenting weird (but usually real) situations as quite common.

WAUGH, Evelyn. Vile Bodies.
Octavo, original black and red patterned cloth (marbled effect) lettered in gilt on spine, pictorial dust jacket (with some highly skillful professional restoration). Fine. First edition. A lovely copy of the author’s second novel - one of the highlights of the twentieth century English fiction, rare in dust jacket.
Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) was born in Hampstead, England, into a family of publishers and writers. He was educated at Lancing and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he majored in journalism and modern history. Waugh's first book, A Life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was published in 1928. Soon afterward his first novel, Decline and Fall, appeared and his career was sensationally launched. In fifteen novels of cunning construction and lapidary eloquence, Time summarized later, Evelyn Waugh developed a wickedly hilarious yet fundamentally religious assault on a century that, in his opinion, had ripped up the nourishing taproot of tradition and let wither all the dear things of the world. Apart from his novels, Waugh also wrote several acclaimed travel books, two additional biographies, and an autobiography, A Little Learning. $18,500.00 WAUGH, Evelyn.

Norton (1992). 512 pp. $25.95 cloth. Many great novelists have had intricate, even prickly, personalities. But in Evelyn Waugh, nature and grace worked overtime to produce an extraordinary character, a full understanding of whose complexities would require the combined skills of an archaeologist, a psychiatrist, and a Jesuit confessor of the old school. Martin Stannard, a lecturer in English at the University of Leicester, doesn't quite fit that bill. Still, and with far more acuity than was evident in Christopher Sykes' earlier study, the multiple levels of Waugh's persona are laid bare and, in some instances, gracefully, even insightfully, explored in Stannard's recently completed two-volume biography. (The latter volume, which avoids the excessive Freudianism of the former, is in most respects the superior effort.) Who, or what, was Evelyn Waugh? He was, touching but the surface of the man and his art, a brilliant satirist-one of the funniest writers of the century. But the humor was combined with a literary craftsmanship unsurpassed among his contemporaries (although Waugh himself would protest here in favor of Wodehouse). To take but one local comparison: Tom Wolfe's

The Life of Evelyn Waugh
Waugh Revisited
The Life of Evelyn Waugh . By Douglas Lane Patey. Blackwell. 448 pp. $44.95. Reviewed by Kenneth R. Craycraft Jr. When St. Augustine wrote his Confessions, he was, in a strong sense, "inventing" a life. To the raw data of his remarkable and varied experiences, he attempted to apply his freshly invented idea of history in order to tell a story. Of course he had lived these experiences, but they did not become a story until he reflected upon their meaning and relatedness. What then emerged is a delicately painted narrative portrait, in which the artist supplies interpretive gloss, showing us nearly as much in the telling as in the events he recalls and describes. While never explicitly invoking Augustine in this context, Douglas Lane Patey employs just such an idea in his aptly titled final chapter of The Life of Evelyn Waugh : "Retrospective: Shaping a Life." For Patey, it is no surprise that Waugh’s late fiction (the War Trilogy, The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold ) was so confessional. "Waugh’s first sustained use of fiction," an early, unsuccessful short story, was already "the vehicle for exploring the shape of his own life." Indeed, Patey convinces the reader that the narrative structure of human life—life as a novel—was a constant preoccupation of Waugh; his fiction was the means of communicating that truth.

    Evelyn Waugh
Black Mischief by Evelyn Waugh The island of Azania, east of Somaliland and west of the Gulf of Aden, straddles the equator. It is a hot, humid, bug-infested backwater inhabited by degenerate Arabs, cannibal blacks, venal Armenians, paranoid French, factuous English and unctuous Indians. A layer of Europeans floats uneasily on top. Azania and its people are of course wholly fictitious, which gives the author enormous room for fun. It's a refreshing book to read, because it lampoons all parties equally. By contrast most satire today sticks to approved and correct subjects. Evelyn Waugh is bound by no such rules. Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder by Evelyn Waugh Charles Ryder, a lonely student at Oxford, is captivated by the outrageous and decadent Sebastian Flyte. Invited to Brideshead, Sebastian’s magnificent family home, Charles welcomes the attentions of its eccentric, aristocratic inhabitants, gradually becoming infatuated with them and the life of privilege they inhabit – in particular, with Sebastian’s remote sister, Julia. But he gradually comes to recognize his spiritual and social distance from them, eventually discovering a world where duty and desire, faith and happiness are in conflict.
