Waugh, Evelyn (Arthur St John) 1903-66. Evelyn Waugh was born in London and educated at Lancing School and Hertford College, Oxford. On his own admission he wasted his time at Oxford. After university he taught for a brief period in private schools and was dismissed from one of them for drunkenness. He worked for the Daily Express, and studied arts and crafts in a desultory way. His first work, privately printed when he was 13, was The World to Come: A Poem in Three Cantos (1916). The next, also privately printed, was PRB: An Essay on The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood 1847-1854 (1926). His first novel, Decline and Fall , was based on his experiences as a teacher and was published in 1928. In the same year came Rossetti: His Life and Works Decline and Fall introduced a considerable comic novelist and Vile Bodies (1930) sealed his reputation and brought him financial success. Acknowledged as England's leading satirical novelist in the 1930s, Waugh continued his brilliant career with Black Mischief A Handful of Dust Mr Loveday's Little Outing, and Other Sad Stories

Evelyn Arthur Waugh
Biography, Themes
Waugh, Evelyn Arthur St. John (1903-1966), English author of satirical novels. He was born in London. Between 1928 and 1938 he published five novels notable for their wit and pure satire on such aspects of upper-class British life as colonialism, public schools, and the manners and morals of high society. These novels are Decline and Fall (1928), Vile Bodies (1930), Black Mischief (1932), A Handful of Dust (1934), and Scoop (1938). Brideshead Revisited (1945), a serious novel about a declining aristocratic family of Roman Catholics, is considered by many critics his finest work. In The Loved One (1948), Waugh satirically described funeral practices in Hollywood, California. Waugh's experiences as a commando during World War II (1939-1945) led to a satirical trilogy: Men at Arms (1952), Officers and Gentlemen (1955), and Unconditional Surrender (1962).
Works
Decline and Fall Vile Bodies - Where are we? The French coast, sometime in the 1930s: "the near future," Waugh wrote in his preface, "when existing social tendencies have become more marked." Against an endless cycle of parties and balls, socialite Adam Fenwick-Symes and his fellow Bright Young Things seek amusement and shun boredom. In their faithlessness, their combination of voyeurism and exhibitionism and their obsession with the trivial and ephemeral, his social set accurately reflect the modern world in which they thrive - until the collapse of government and the declaration of the next world war.

12. St. Helena Empress By Evelyn Waugh
EVELYN WAUGH. St. Helena Empress. Portrait by JeanAuguste-Dominique Ingres. WE ARE ADVISED TO MEDITATE on the lives of the saints, but
http://www.cin.org/saints/helena.html
EVELYN WAUGH St. Helena Empress Portrait by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres WE ARE ADVISED TO MEDITATE must become, either here or in the fires of purgatory, if she is to enter heaven. She cannot slip through in fancy dress, made up as Joan of Arc. There is little of heroism or genius in any of this. We can assume that she was devout, chaste, munificent; a thoroughly good woman in an age when palaces were mostly occupied by the wicked; but she lived grandly and comfortably, whereas most of the saints in every age have accepted poverty as the condition of their calling. We know of no suffering of hers, physical, spiritual, or mental, beyond the normal bereavements, disappointments, and infirmities which we all expect to bear. Yet she lived in an age when Christians had often to choose between flight, apostasy, or brutal punishment. Where, one may ask, lies her sanctity? Where the particular lesson for us who live in such very different circumstances? We have no absolute certainty that she found it. The old sneer, that there was enough "wood of the cross" to build a ship, though still repeated, has long been nullified. All the splinters and shavings venerated everywhere have been patiently measured and found to comprise a volume far short of a cross. We know that most of these fragments have a plain pedigree back to the early fourth century. But there is no guarantee which would satisfy an antiquary of the authenticity of Helena’s discovery. If she found the True Cross, it was by direct supernatural aid, not by archaeological reasoning. That, from the first, was its patent of title. There are certain elements about the surviving relics which are so odd that they seem to preclude the possibility of imposture. The "Label", for example—the inscription

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) English writer, regarded by many as the leading satirical novelist of his day. Among Waugh's most popular books is BRIDESHEAD REVISITED (1945), depicting the Oxford world of the late 1920s. It was made into a highly successful television series in 1981, starring Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews. Waugh wrote sixteen novels. He also published travel books and biographies. 'I have been here before,' I said; I had been there before; first with Sebastian more than twenty years ago on a cloudless day in June, when the ditches were creamy with meadowsweet and the air heavy with all the scents of summer; it was a day of peculiar splendour, and though I had been there so often, in so many moods, it was to that first visit that my heart returned on this, my latest." (from Brideshead Revisited (from Decline and Fall Decline and Fall , like Waugh's other works, continued the tradition of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw - Waugh is as flippant and irreverent. "'The Welsh,' said the Doctor, 'are the only nation in the world that has produced no graphic or plastic art, no architecture, no drama. They just sing, 'he said with disgust, 'sing and blow down wind instruments of plated silver...'" Waugh's next novel, VILE BODIES (1930), which the author described as "a welter of sex and snobbery," caricatured the world of the Bright Young People.

by Charles J. Rolo
W HEN blurb writers are caroling the praises of some newly emerged maestro of sophisticated farce, they can seldom resist the temptation of comparing him to "the early Evelyn Waugh." Despite the fact that Brideshead Revisited which introduces the "later" or "serious" Evelyn Waugh has sold many more copies in the United States than all of Waugh's other books put together, his name, at least among the literary is still most apt to evoke a singular brand of comic genius. He is, par excellence, an example of the artist who has created a world peculiarly his own. The adjective "Waughsian" is too much of a tongue twister to have passed into our vocabulary, but a substitute phrase has "It's pure Evelyn Waugh." "Pure Evelyn Waugh." The expression evokes a riotously anarchic cosmos, in which only the outrageous can happen, and when it does happen is outrageously diverting; in which people reason and behave with awesome inconsequence and lunatic logic. A primitive ruler, eager to be modern, is induced by a wily contractor to purchase boots for his barefoot army: the savages happily heat up their cookpots and devour the boots. An Oxford porter says to an undergraduate who has just been expelled: "I expect you'll be becoming a school master, sir. That's what most of the gentlemen does, sir, that gets sent down for indecent behaviour." On the planet where Waugh's comic novels have their being, Oxford and Mayfair are as barbarous in their way as darkest Azania.
