CIP Reviewed by Katheryn Broughton Volume 20 Number 5 1992 October Sheila Watson's first published novel, The Double Hook Set in B.C.'s Cariboo country (where the author taught early in her life), the story involves Stella, a young teacher, as she slowly becomes part of this small, isolated community. She senses the tensions that animate the various relationships and the ripple effect on other, peripheral characters. Central to the plot is the bitterness between Mamie and her sister-in-law, Rose. Mamie considers herself the sole person of taste and culture in this remote outpost and considers Rose beneath contempt. A boarder at Rose's, Stella moves (with her horse, Button, and her dog, Juno) to her own cabin, where she ponders the life she observes around her as she reads her literary classics. The story is often enigmatic: for example, the reader is not clearly told why Stella remains or the reason for the Farishes' departure. Like The Double Hook , this work is strong in atmosphere, almost brooding, reflecting the austere beauty of the land, which is alluring despite its harsh climate and forbidding terrain.

My responsibilities include managing three museums, developing strategies and policies to ensure that these museums are relevant to the communities they serve, fostering partnerships within the museum/heritage sector and with other organisations, securing funding for all developments and championing and managing projects. When Sheila Watson died on Monday, 02 Februsry, 1998, it was cause for serious thought on my part, for she made a really significant contribution to my success as a student and a teacher. Sheila was the teacher with whom I worked the most closely, and for the longest time. She supervised both my MA and Phd work at the University of Alberta. At the time of her passing, her very special novel, The Double Hook was credited with being the first MODERN Canadian novel. Marshall McLuhan put me on to Sheila and Wilfred Watson when I moved from the University of Toronto to the University of Alberta in the early 60s. The Watsons were among his very closest friends. Sheila had a powerful and incisive intellect. I'm not at all sure I've ever met its match. She was probably the world's expert on the portrait painter/satirist/novelist/polemicist Percy Wyndham Lewis, founder and proponent, with Ezra Pound, of the short lived Vorticist Movement. Sheila's Phd thesis on Lewis, is, in effect, one of the ground works for Lewis, and therefore, McLuhan studies. Canadian academia and writers owe Sheila very much indeed!
