Booker Taliaferro Washington
Educator Founder of Tuskegee Institute. Throughout his adult life he instructed African-Americans in citizenship and worked to improve their economic position through education and vocational training. Booker T. Washington was born in a rude slave cabin in Virginia and weaned in the salt mills and coal mines. He had an insatiable hunger for knowledge that led him to memorize a worn copy of a spelling book and, later, to establish Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. From its opening in 1881, with 30 students in an old church and a dilapidated building, until the present day, the world-renown Tuskegee Institute has been guided by the principles of its distinguished founder. Washington learned the value of industrial education at Hampton Institute, which he used as a model in the building of Tuskegee. He taught his students the dignity and the beauty of labor and that learning a trade was more necessary sometimes than the study of Greek and Latin verbs. "It is at the bottom of life we must begin," he told his students, "and not at the top." At the time of its founder's death in 1915, the Institute had more than 1500 students, almost 200 teachers, more than 100 buildings and thousands of loyal alumni. In his trips through the North and South to raise money for Tuskegee, Booker T. Washington attained considerable fame as a public speaker and as a spokesman for African-Americans; a role not sought, but richly deserved.

African-American History
Booker T. Washington EnchantedLearning.com
Booker Taliafero Washington (April 15?, 1856 - Nov. 15, 1915) was an orator, civil rights activist, professor, writer, and poet. Born a slave in Virginia , Washington was freed by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (when it went into effect in the South, in 1865). At age 9, began working in deplorable conditions in salt furnaces and later in the coal mines of West Virginia. In the few hours not spent working, he went to school. Washington eventually went to the Hampton Institute in Virginia and became a teacher. Washington dedicated his life to education as a means of obtaining equality. He founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama (1881), and the National Negro Business League (1900).

2-24-03: Culture Watch Why Booker T. Washington Is Still Relevant
By Carol M. Swain
Ms. Swain is a professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Her latest book is The New White Nationalism in America: Its Challenge to Integration. Journal of Blacks in Higher Education While I believe that state and federal governments have a responsibility to improve the lives of disadvantaged Americans, I have no faith in their power to address the needs of blacks who reject mainstream values and norms, not to mention Biblical principles delineating acceptable standards of behavior. The latter is especially important, since the overwhelming majority of blacks in America purport to be Bible-believing Christians. I believe every middle-class black American has a special obligation to extend a helping hand to those members of his or her race trapped in hopeless situations. This obligation might be satisfied by tutoring a child, or offering words of encouragement to a welfare mother, or dropping a dollar into the cup of a homeless person. While we should love and embrace all humanity, I believe that the greatest responsibilities for solving black problems rest on the shoulders of black people. I often wonder what Booker T. Washington would say to black Americans if he were suddenly to reappear on the scene and assess their behavior. I have a deep suspicion he would once again declare to the members of his race, "cast down your bucket where you are—cast it down in making friends. . . of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded. Cast it down in agriculture, mechanics, in commerce, in domestic service, and in the professions. . . No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem" (Atlanta Exposition speech, 1895). In their willingness to take menial jobs, many immigrants have demonstrated an internalization of the norms that Washington preached to blacks more than 100 years ago. Indeed, Americans of all races have much to learn from the practical wisdom of this former slave, who dined with Presidents.

116. Influence On WVSC - About Booker T. Washington - Booker T. Washington Institute
A site was chosen in Institute, which was then known as Piney Grove. From there booker T. washington s influence on the fledgling school began.
http://www.wvsc.edu/btwi/btw-influence.html
After the Civil War, schools to educate African-Americans began to be established. The second Morrill Act of 1890 dictated that the governor and legislative body of West Virginia establish such a school in their state. A site was chosen in Institute, which was then known as Piney Grove. From there Booker T. Washington's influence on the fledgling school began. In 1891 West Virginia Colored Institute was founded. In 1909 Mr. Washington recommended Byrd Prillerman, a friend and noted educator, to be its first president. During Prillerman's tenure, Mr. Washington was a guest lecturer many times, and his educational style at Tuskegee Institute was modeled at the new school. Students built all buildings, performed janitorial duties, and studied everything from agriculture to sewing. It was during Prillerman's presidency that the name of the college was changed to West Virginia Collegiate Institute, and in 1915 was given the authority to grant college degrees. In 1927, the name of the institution was again changed and became known as West Virginia State College. Mr. Washington's influence on the school and the state was such, though, that a bill was introduced in the legislature in 1933 to again change the name of the school, this time to Booker T. Washington State College. The bill was defeated, however, because pride in the college was so tremendous that alumni, faculty and students vigorously protested a name change. The institution has remained West Virginia State College since.
