Download PDF Robert Penn Warren is best known for his 1946 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the King’s Men, chronicling the rise and fall of Willie Stark, the powerful governor of a southern state. Although Warren continually denied the connection, most critics agree that the novel is a thinly disguised telling of the life story of Huey P. Long, the populist governor of Louisiana during the 1930s. Like Stark, Long was assassinated in 1935 by a physician although the real-life assassin had fuzzier motives than the fictional Dr. Adam Stanton has when he murders Stark in the state capital.

at major online bookstores Review by Roger Bishop Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) was one of the twentieth century's most eminent American men of letters. He was a distinguished novelist and poet, literary critic, essayist, short story writer, and coeditor of numerous textbooks. He was a founding editor of The Southern Review . He was a popular teacher at Yale and other schools. Also, "Red" Warren, as he was known to his friends, and Cleanth Brooks influenced the teaching of literature to a generation of college students through their advocacy of close textual reading or, as it was popularly known, the New Criticism. Warren hated that term. Not a system, he wrote, "but intelligence, tact, discipline, honesty, sensitivity these are the things we have to depend on, after all, to give us what we prize in criticism, the insight." Warren received many honors including three Pulitzer prizes, one for fiction (

Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989)
Biography Robert Penn Warren was born on April 24, 1905, in Guthrie, Kentucky. His father, Robert Franklin Warren, was a businessman and his mother, Anna Ruth Penn, was a schoolteacher. Growing up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky, he became a true Southerner, and the richness of memories and stories helped influence his work for the rest of his life. Though he left the South in the middle of his life, his spirit and loyalty remained. Forced to abandon a Naval career because of an accident that led to his losing sight in one eye, he enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, with intentions of becoming an engineer. Warren's roommate at Vanderbilt was Allen Tateone of the many young writers in Nashville that aspired to writing poetry and discussing the nostalgia of the agrarian South. Soon Warren began composing his own verse to give to Tate and professor John Crowe Ransom to publish in their literary magazine, The Fugitive. The literary movement impressed Warren and by the time he graduated from Vanderbilt in 1925, he had decided that he would begin a career as a writer. Warren pursued his literary career in the graduate programs at the University of California and Yale University and in 1928 he entered Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Two years later he returned to the U.S. with a degree in English literature. He married his first wife, Emma Brescia, and began teaching English at Southwestern College in Memphis, Tennessee. Moving from Memphis back to his alma mater Vanderbilt for three years, he then moved on to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. It was at LSU that Warren gained the reputation as one of the most influential academics of his generation.

W ITHIN the confined universe of commercial literature it is not uncommon to recognize in the writing of one author an allusion or event recalling the work of another. References are a natural way for writers to pay tribute to peers and predecessors. One well-known tribute in American literature comes near the end of The Catcher in the Rye , when Holden Caulfield finds and erases an obscenity scrawled in a school stairwell, an obvious tip of the literary cap by J. D. Salinger to F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose Nick Carraway, twenty years earlier, was dismayed to find an epithet in the same spirit etched on Jay Gatsby's steps in The Great Gatsby
Occasionally, however, a work comes along in which the motivation for literary cap-tipping seems less straightforward. In such a work references and passages found in a previously published volume are echoed so insistently as to leave the reader wondering whether the similarities constitute a deliberate though unacknowledged homageor not.
Jay McInerney's ambitious new novel of the American South is such a work: it contains such an uncanny series of likenesses to Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the King's Men (1946) that to attempt a comparison of the two novels becomes almost irresistible.

Warren was born and raised in Guthrie, Kentucky, a small town in the “Black Patch” tobacco country near the Tennessee border. Early on he developed deep loves for the countryside and for reading, particularly fiction and history. After failing his physical examination for the U.S. Naval Academy because of an eye injury, in 1921 he entered Vanderbilt University instead.
Warren’s talent for writing was quickly noticed by his teachers, including John Crowe Ransom and Donald Davidson. Before long, he was an active member of the “Fugitives,” a literary group centered at the university that met regularly to discuss philosophy and poetry. Warren at this time began writing his own verse and became close friends with Allen Tate, another “Fugitive” whose literary career, like Warren’s, was then just beginning.
By the time he graduated from Vanderbilt in 1925 and was off to graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley (and later at Yale and then Oxford with a Rhodes scholarship), Warren had committed himself to a career of writing. His years at Vanderbilt with the Fugitives had been crucial in his early development. Perhaps most important, he established during this time a profound conviction for the worth of artistic pursuit, seeing, in his own words, “that poetry was a vital activity, that it related to ideas and life.” Moreover, particularly through his friendship with Allen Tate, he immersed himself in the tremendous vitality and experimentation of literary modernism and began experimenting to discover his own poetic voice. Probably best known for his novel

(Louisiana State University Press) Until they put us away - honest injun - until they lay us in the grave, we will never be able to fathom the bizarre choices of American poetasters. Great and wonderful poets are relegated to tiny out-of- the-way presses, generally spat on and ignored. All while versifiers out of the East Coast Culture Morass get elected to assorted high-falutin' boards, win prizes, get named as Poets Laureate, and, in general, continue to buffalo the masses into thinking that their turgid words have import, if not life. Such is the case with Robert Penn Warren, here being honored with yet another volume of his selected works - some 200 in number. But lower was sinking the sun. I shook myself,
Flung a last glance around, then suddenly
Saw the old enameled bedpan, high on a shelf.
Stood still again, as the last sun fell on me.
("Boy Wandering in Simms' Valley") Running ahead beside the sea,
You turned and flung a smile, like spray.
It glittered like tossed spray in the sunlight.

Robert Penn Warren's attacks on the notion of pure poetry began in his earliest critical writings but came into focus during the 1940s when his major critical essays were written and his own poetic practice was in transition. "Pure and Impure Poetry," first delivered as a lecture entitled "Pure Poetry and the Structure of Poems" in 1942 and first published in the Kenyon Review in Spring 1943, sets forth the issue that was clearly uppermost in Warren's thinking during the decade of the 1940s. Along with his equally influential essay "A Poem of Pure Imagination," on Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Pure and Impure Poetry" defines Warren's belief, persisting throughout his creative life, in the necessary tension between the ideal and the real, the abstract and the relativehis belief in the poetics of (im)purity. On September 6, 1936, Warren wrote to Seward Collins, editor of the American Review:
