Warren’s “Uncollected Poems 1943- 1989”
My favorite poem in Warren’s “Uncollected Poems 1943- 1989” is actually “Bicentennial,” a 12 page poem that ends with a celebration of the freedoms the founding fathers have given us: “Even so, we should not forget the virtues of the old ones who/ Backs to a dark continent, stood and set us free from tyranny” Of course, he follows these inspirational lines with the chilling reminder that we have not done much with this freedom: “They did not get around to setting us free from ourselves.” Unfortunately, at the moment I have neither the patience nor the determination needed to discuss that poem in any depth. That said, though, I’m also quite fond of “Lord Jesus, I Wonder,” a sobering, ironic poem that manages to capture Warren’s spiritual ambivalence: LORD JESUS, I WONDER
Lord Jesus, I wonder if I would recognize you
On the corner of Broadway and Forty-Second-
Just one more glaze-eyed, yammering bum, nobody to listen
But the halt and maimed. My legs are good.
Yet sometimes I've thought of you, sandaled on sand

Robert Penn Warren’s “Promises: Poems 1954-1956”
Robert Penn Warren’s “Promises: Poems 1954-1956” finally contains some of the kinds of poems I was expecting when I asked for his collected poems for Christmas. After a hundred pages of slogging through poems that I found less than inspirational, I was delighted to find several poems in this forty page section that I liked a lot. My favorite poem is probably “Gold Glade,” although the poem is far too optimistic to truly represent the rest of the poems in this section. Though I do find Warren’s vision of the world rather more optimistic in this section, poem number VI, entitled “School Lesson Based on Word of Tragic Death of Entire Gillum Family,” describes how a father killed his entire family with an ice pick while they were getting ready to go to school. So, it’s certainly not just a shift to optimism that makes these poems more appealing to me. Perhaps it is the introduction of a “personal” touch in the poems that I find most appealing. Somehow, unlike his earlier poems, you sense a real person behind these poems: III. Gold Glade

Reviews
Robert Penn Warren has distinguished himself in many areas of endeavoras a poet, a novelist, a critic, and an observer of American history and politics. In this book, John Burt examines Warren's writings in these apparently disparate fields and shows how they are tied together not only by their common themes but also by an inner logic that captures the analogies between artistic and political problems. "This fine critical study is the product of sound scholarship and a discriminating and probing mind."James H. Justus, Indiana University "[An] intelligent discussion of the American ideal manifested in Warren's works as the internal struggle of romantic selfhood." Choice "Provocative and frequently insightful . . . a significant contribution to the study of Warren's work."Hugh Ruppersburg, American Literature "A welcome addition to the Warren criticism.
