      Go, Lovely Rose
        G O, lovely Rose,
        Tell her that wastes her time and me,
        That now she knows,
        When I resemble her to thee,
        How sweet and fair she seems to be.
        Tell her that's young,
        And shuns to have her graces spied,
        That hadst thou sprung
        In deserts where no men abide,
        Thou must have uncommended died.
        Small is the worth
        Of beauty from the light retir'd:
        Bid her come forth,
        Suffer herself to be desir'd,
        And not blush so to be admir'd.
        Then die, that she
        The common fate of all things rare
        May read in thee,
        How small a part of time they share,
        That are so wondrous sweet and fair.
        Edmund Waller
      Upon the Late Storm
        And Death of His Highness Ensuing the Same
        W E must resign! Heaven his great soul does claim
        In storms, as loud as his immortal fame;
        His dying groans, his last breath, shakes our isle,
        And trees uncut fall for his funeral pile.
        About his palace their broad roots are tossed
        Into the air: So Romulus was lost.
        New Rome in such a tempest missed her king,
        And from obeying fell to worshipping.

      Of English Verse
        P OETS may boast, as safely vain,
        Their works shall with the world remain;
        Both, bound together, live or die,
        The verses and the prophecy.
        But who can hope his lines should long
        Last in a daily changing tongue?
        While they are new, envy prevails;
        And as that dies, our language fails.
        When architects have done their part,
        The matter may betray their art;
        Time, if we use ill-chosen stone,
        Soon brings a well-built palace down.
        Poets that lasting marble seek
        Must carve in Latin or in Greek;
        We write in sand, our language grows,
        And, like the tide, our work o'erflows.
        Chaucer his sense can only boast,
        The glory of his numbers lost!
        Years have defaced his matchless strain,
        And yet he did not sing in vain.
        The beauties which adorned that age,
        The shining subjects of his rage,
        Hoping they should immortal prove,
        Rewarded with success his love.
        This was the generous poet's scope,
        And all an English pen can hope,
        To make the fair approve his flame,
        That can so far extend their fame.
        Verse, thus designed, has no ill fate

    Waller/Key Family The following is the lineage of the Waller line and other collateral lines, starting with the marriage of John and Mary (nee Key) Waller. The following is transcribed exactly as was originally written. The text at times seems to be a bit confusing at first sight. In a few instances we have included a comment, indicated in red , to try and denote which generation or child is being noted. The source is from the book Key and Allied Families, Book V John Waller The Wallers trace their ancestry to the Norman Conquest. John Waller III was the emigrant of this family. He was given grant of land by the King, in King William Co., Va. His plantation was known as "Enfield." The children of John Waller and Mary Key were: William b. Sept. 24, 1771, d. 1756; John b. Feb. 23, 1673, d. Aug. 2, 1753; Mary b. May 23, 1674; Thomas b. Oct. 17, 1675; Stephen b. Nov 24, 1676; Benjamin b. Mar. 18, 1678; Edmund b. Feb. 3, 1680; James b. May 25, 1683; Jemima b. On a Girdle
    That which her slender waist confined,
    Shall now my joyful temples bind; No monarch but would give his crown, His arms might do what this has done. It was my heaven's extremest sphere, The pale which held that lovely deer; My joy, my grief, my hope, my love, Did all within this circle move! A narrow compass! and yet there Dwelt all that's good, and all that's fair! Give me but what this riband bound, Take all the rest the sun goes around! This content was written by Jody Zolli. TO MY LADY SOPHIA.
    M ADAM
    Your commands for the gathering of these sticks into a faggot had sooner been obeyed, but, that intending to present you with my whole vintage, I stayed till the latest grapes were ripe; for here your ladyship hath not only all I have done, but all I ever mean to do of this kind. Not but that I may defend the attempt I have made upon poetry, by the examples (not to trouble you with history) of many wise and worthy persons of our own times; as Sir Philip Sidney, Sir Fra: Bacon , Cardinal Perron (the ablest of his countrymen), and the former Pope, who, they say, instead of the Triple Crown, wore sometimes the poet's ivy, as an ornament, perhaps, of less weight and trouble. But, madam, these nightingales sung only in the spring; it was the diversion of their youth
