Australian Cooking with love, from Margaret E. Walker Margaret E. Walker Margaret lives in Australia, and is helping us increase our awareness of food 'down under,' and open our horizons to Australian cooking. Now retired and exercising her pen, she has been in the food business as a manufacturer, and tells us that "I have had three loves all my life, reading (a gift from my father) creating food (from my mother and grandmother) and writing (from my fairy godmother). My love of cooking and catering comes from being part of a large family, and taking pleasure in seeing that people enjoy the food I create." While this speaks of the legendary variety available in New York, it also tells of similarity, for in every bodega, every salumeria is someone shopping for the food that sustains physical life with a recipe that nourishes our hearts. It is to this similarity that we have dedicated the site. We began as a family affair, determined to get the job done, and have watched a worldwide response. Her parents had accepted teaching posts at New Orleans College, now Dillard University, and moved the family from Alabama to Louisiana. During her sophomore year in college, Walker had the opportunity to meet renowned poet Langston Hughes. Hughes advised Walker's parents to have their daughter educated in the North and encouraged Walker to continue working and refine her style. Consequently, in 1932 Walker transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.and received her Bachelor of Arts in English degree in 1935. During her enrollment, an encounter with W.E.B. DuBois led to her becoming published in the May 1934 edition of

MARGARET URBAN WALKER joined the faculty of the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University in August, 2002. She is Lincoln Professor of Ethics, Justice, and the Public Sphere Her areas of research are Anglo-American moral and political theory, the history of ethics, and feminist and critical race theory, with additional philosophical interests in Wittgenstein and Foucault. She received the Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University in 1975, and was a member of the Philosophy Department at Fordham University from 1974-2002. She has taught philosophy in undergraduate and graduate programs at several universities, and has offered courses in feminist philosophy since 1976. Walker is author of Moral Contexts Moral Understandings: A Feminist Study in Ethics (Routledge, 1998) as well as articles on moral epistemology and responsibility, feminist critique of ethics, and the role of the ethics consultant.
