Walker, Margaret (1920 - 1996)
Research Materials Other Resources Margaret Walker, born in Bendigo, Victoria, was first inspired by dance when she went to a Melbourne performance by the visiting Covent Garden Russian Ballet in 1939. The direction of her life changed dramatically as a result of her visit to the theatre. Walker, a pharmacy student at the time, started taking ballet classes with Edouard Borovansky and his wife Xenia. Dance was to occupy Walker's life for the next five decades until her death in 1996. Walker eventually, however, opted to devote her energies to a dance form that seemed to her more egalitarian than ballet. She became involved with a group of activists in post-war Melbourne whose political beliefs were the driving force behind their art making. Walker joined the peace movement and the Communist Party and Melbourne's New Theatre became the focus of her activities. She became a passionate pioneer of folk and character dance in Australia and in 1967 established Dance Concert a professional performing group that aimed to preserve the dances of Australia and other countries. It was active until 1977. Later, she established the Margaret Walker Folk Dance Centre for the resourcing, teaching and demonstration of folk dance. Throughout her life she supported the idea that every child should be given an opportunity to dance and consistently championed dance in Aboriginal and multicultural communities.

Margaret Walker - (1915-1998 Jackson By Jewel Johnson
Houston High School in Houston, Mississippi Margaret Walker was born on July 7, 1915, in Birmingham, Alabama. Walker thanked her mother for teaching her to read, while crediting her father with encouraging her to write. The Reverend Sigismund C. Walker, her father, was born in Jamaica Buff Bay, Jamaica and British West Indies. He came to the United States to study for the ministry, and he earned his degree from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. Marion Dozier, a music teacher, and Walker's father fell in love at first sight. After they married, the couple moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where Walker and her three younger siblings were born. When she was ten years old, Walker and her family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. I. Upbringing, Education, and Professional Life Sixteen-year-old Walker met Langston Hughes at New Orleans University where she was a sophomore and her parents were professors. After having read her work, Hughes was impressed, and he encouraged her to move to the North. Her first poem, called "Daydreaming" but later entitled "I Want to Write," appeared in Crisis magazine in 1934.

CARL A. WALKER, MARGARET A. WALKER, on behalf of themselves and all others similarly situated, Plaintiffs -Appellants v.
WALLACE AUTO SALES, INCORPORATED, GUARDIAN NATIONAL ACCEPTANCE CORPORATION, and JOHN DOES, One-Ten, Defendants-Appellees
No. 97-3824
UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SEVENTH CIRCUIT
155 F.3d 927; 1998 U.S. App. LEXIS 22663
April 9, 1998, Argued
September 18, 1998, Decided
PRIOR HISTORY: [*1] Appeal from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. No. 96 C 5506. Ann Claire Williams, Judge.
DISPOSITION: AFFIRMED IN PART; REVERSED AND REMANDED IN PART.
For WALLACE AUTO SALES, INCORPORATED, Defendant - Appellee: MICHAEL KRELOFF, Northfield, IL.
JUDGES: Before CUMMINGS, CUDAHY and RIPPLE, Circuit Judges. OPINIONBY: RIPPLE OPINION: RIPPLE, Circuit Judge. Carl and Margaret Walker ("the Walkers") brought this lawsuit against Wallace Auto Sales ("Wallace") and Guardian National Acceptance Corporation ("Guardian") on behalf of themselves and all others similarly situated. In their nine-count amended complaint, the Walkers alleged that the defendants systematically imposed hidden finance charges on automobile purchases in violation of the Truth in Lending Act ("TILA"), 15 U.S.C. 1601-1693r . . . The district court dismissed the Walkers' TILA claim because the conduct alleged by the Walkers did not constitute a violation of that Act. In addition, the court dismissed the Walkers' remaining claims because, in its view, those claims could not survive in the [*2] absence of the TILA violation. For the reasons set forth in the following opinion, we reverse the district court's dismissal of the Walkers' TILA claim against Wallace, affirm its dismissal of the TILA claim against Guardian and remand the Walkers' remaining claims to the district court for further consideration.

Margaret Walker, Plaintiff-Appellant v. National Recovery, Inc., Defendant-Appellee No. 99-2119 UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SEVENTH CIRCUIT 1999 U.S. App. LEXIS 33586 November 1, 1999, Argued December 21, 1999, Decided PRIOR HISTORY: [*1] Appeal from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. No. 98 C 4530. Morton Denlow, Magistrate Judge. DISPOSITION: Reversed and Remanded. JUDGES: Before Easterbrook, Ripple, and Diane P. Wood, Circuit Judges. OPINIONBY: EASTERBROOK Johnson dealt with two letters. Each contained a paraphrase of the statutory notice. The first letter added: If you fail to make prompt payment we will have no alternative but to proceed with collection, which may include referring this account for legal action or reporting [*4] this delinquency to the credit bureau. Should you wish to discuss this matter, contact our office and ask for extension 772. The other related: The above account has been placed with our firm for payment in full. Call our office immediately upon receipt of this letter. Our toll free number is 1-800-521-3236. Neither letter attempted to explain how a demand for "prompt" or "immediate" action could be reconciled with the statutory 30-day period. We held that each was potentially confusing and therefore that the complaints could not be dismissed under Rule 12(b)(6).

Walker, Margaret I Want to Write by Margaret Walker
I want to write I want to write the songs of my people. I want to hear them singing melodies in the dark. I want to catch the last floating strains from their sob-torn throats. I want to frame their dreams into words; their souls into notes. I want to catch their sunshine laughter in a bowl; fling dark hands to a darker sky and fill them full of stars then crush and mix such lights till they become a mirrored pool of brilliance in the dawn.

Margaret Walker: In Memoriam [Margaret Walker died on November 30, 1998, at the age of 83. The Nation paid its respects by reprinting a speech that Amiri Baraka delivered at a program at New York University celebrating Walker in 1998.] Amiri Baraka
Excerpts from "Margaret Walker Alexander" You cannot even spell here without her. First, Margaret Walker, Margaret Walker Alexander. She was one of the greatest writers of the language. She was the grandest expression of the American poetic voice and the ultimate paradigm of the Afro-American classic literary tradition. Margaret Walker Alexander was the living continuum of the great revolutionary democratic arts culture that has sustained and inspired the Afro-American people since the middle passage. Hers is an American art, but an art deeply rooted in the actual life and history and feelings of the African chattel slaves, transformed by the obscene experience of slavery, from human to "real estate," as Du Bois shocks us into understanding in Black Reconstruction in America Many were suffering throughout the world, the good doctor said, but "none of them was real estate."
