READ AN EXCERPT

April 26, 2004 In 1975, writer Alice Walker wrote an essay about her search for Zora Neale Hurston. In the process, Walker helped lift from obscurity the work and life story of the most widely published black woman author of the 1930s Harlem Renaissance. Walker author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple never met Hurston. But she says she feels a profound connection to her. For Intersections , a series on artists and their inspirations, Walker talks with NPR's Vertamae Grosvenor
Hurston was a trained anthropologist as well as a writer, and her stories about fruit pickers and hoodoo workers in sawmill and turpentine camps create an intimate portrait of southern black rural life. For Walker, Hurston looms as a disciplined, loving authority figure, a grandmother of sorts for black culture who provides "cultural nourishment" and "spiritual food."

The site contains a biography written by the student, which is based on information "gleaned from her collected works and from reading a biography of her written by Tony Gentry." The site is easily accessed and navigated. It was also designated a "must see" site on the links from http://www.luminarium.org/contemporary/alicew/index.html . This site is really applicable to high school students and teachers. The strong focus is on her literary contributions and how history influenced and is pulled into the work. "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker

(book review)
Professors of American literature frequently bemoan the fact that college
students of the nineties often have little knowledge of the Black Power
Movement and the Second Wave of the Feminist Movement, two social
interventions that define the literary commitments of many contemporary
writers and shape as well our viewpoints about the social commitment of
higher education. While our students will tell us that the sixties and
seventies are tantamount to "ancient history," formal courses in U.S.
history seldom focus on the recent past. Moreover, our students tend to assume that the highly visible postmodern performances of the nineties - such as sartorial politics, multi-cultural advertisement, and feminist and Afrocentric slogan-making - just appeared from nowhere. As a result, they often separate the performance from political statement and commitment, as if each had separate origins. Rutgers University Press has found a way to address this and other generation gaps by publishing a series of textbooks that focuses on short literary works by diverse women writers: "Women Writers Texts and Context"

89. From Alice Walker On Wheatley
from In Search of Our Mothers Gardens by alice walker .For these grandmothers and mothers of ours were not Saints, but
http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/eng384/phil2.htm
from "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens" by Alice Walker "....For these grandmothers and mothers of ours were not "Saints," but Artists; driven to a numb and bleeding madness by the springs of creativity in them for which there was no release....But this is not the end of the story, for all the young womenour mothers and grandmothers, ourselveshave not perished in the wilderness. And if we ask ourselves why, and search for and find the answer, we will know beyond all efforts to erase it from our minds, just exactly who, and of what, we Black American women are. One example, perhaps the most pathetic, most misunderstood one, can provide a backdrop for our mother's work: Phillis Wheatley, a slave in the 1700s. Virginia Woolf, in her book, A Room of One's Own, wrote that in order for a woman to write fiction she must have two things, certainly: a room of her own (with key and lock) and enough money to support herself. What then are we to make of Phillis Wheatley, a slave, who owned not even herself? This sickly, frail, Black girl who required a servant of her own at timesher health was so precariousand who, had she been white, would have been easily considered the intellectual superior of all the women and most of the men in the society of her day. Virginia Woolf wrote further, speaking of course not of our Phillis, that "any woman born with a great gift in the sixteenth century [insert eighteen century, insert Black woman, insert born or made a slave] would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard [insert Saint], feared and mocked at. For it needs little skill and psychology to be sure that a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by contrary instincts [add chains, guns, the lash, the ownership of one's body by someone else, submission to an alien religion] that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty."

    by Alice Walker
I will wait for her in the yard that Maggie and I made so clean and wavy yesterday afternoon. A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is like an extended living room. When the hard clay is swept clean as a floor and the fine sand around the edges lined with tiny, irregular grooves, anyone can come and sit and look up into the elm tree and wait for the breezes that never come inside the house.
Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe. She thinks her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that "no" is a word the world never learned to say to her.
You've no doubt seen those TV shows where the child who has "made it" is confronted, as a surprise, by her own mother and father, tottering in weakly from backstage. (A pleasant surprise, of course: What would they do if parent and child came on the show only to curse out and insult each other?) On TV mother and child embrace and smile into each other's faces. Sometimes the mother and father weep, the child wraps them in her arms and leans across the table to tell how she would not have made it without their help. I have seen these programs.
Sometimes I dream a dream in which Dee and I are suddenly brought together on a TV program of this sort. Out of a dark and soft.seated limousine I am ushered into a bright room filled with many people. There I meet a smiling, gray, sporty man like Johnny Carson who shakes my hand and tells me what a fine girl I have. Then we are on the stage and Dee is embracing me with tears in her eyes. She pins on my dress a large orchid, even though she has told me once that she thinks orchids are tacky flowers.

    Interview by Ellen Kanner
"Anyone who is really alive in their own time will have to be a political writer. As we reveal different worlds to each other, we move us forward into being more compassionate people. Virginia Woolf said writing improves society and makes the writer a better person, too," says Alice Walker. For all the compassion in her life and work, Walker has never shied away from telling the world some things it might not want to hear. For years she has decried the inhumane practice of female genital mutilation, a rite of passage in many countries. She has sided with Fidel Castro over the fate of Cuba. Her books have been banned and then restored to the shelves in public schools and libraries. She will not be silenced, she will not turn the other cheek. Walker's new memoir The Same River Twice is as brave as anything she's ever written.

The Atlantic slave trade had brought most Black Americans from West Africa where Swahili is not spoken, so it would probably have made more sense to learn some West-African language if they really were looking for their roots. The Arab slave trade from East Africa generally sent slaves to the Arab peninsula and to the plantations on the islands in the Indian Ocean. T he program at Antioch was one of the first of its kind, but it was not unique. As one can read about social history at the end of the 60s in
