Reviews "On the map from east to west and across the scale from treble to bass, Anne Waldman is possessed with a passion to witness, to understand, and to describe. . . .  Vow to Poetry is a vow to life - enlightening, challenging, and crucial to the American tradition." - Lisa Jarnot "A vow is the most radical form of the promise, and to fulfill it demands the most rigorous form of commitment.  It constitutes a volunteering of services, and as such it demands not courage but also enormous energy.  Those qualities permeate the life of thinking and writing that is reflected (and reflected upon) in this book.  The vitality of Anne Waldman’s engagement with poetry is manifest in every pieced collected here, and taken together they demonstrate not only the depth but also the scope and duration of that engagement.  This is a wonderful book, informative and also inspiring." - Lyn Heijinian

S. poetry scene.  Her energy, her total commitment to her art, and her cultural work are a wonder to behold. Anyone who wants to understand how poetry and poetics have evolved over the past four decades, must read this new collection of essays, interviews, and critical prose.  Wherever it happened, Anne was there." - Marjorie Perloff Vow to Poetry Also Available:

Imperial Ruler of The Stars
with your silver new-moon-bow,
arrows swift as science You strike trees dead
fell a wild hind

wounding witch, any guise you wish
No hesitation, Dakini of Incantation
Command your spike deep in my heart so I may ride, hunt, speak, shine

Early On Angel Hair double entendre as a fine pasta and the hairy white glassy Xmas tree adornment. Still in college, editor of Bennington College’s literary magazine Silo in situ The Floating Bear Iovis Editing influences my other work certainly. When time came to make a book, editing Iovis Kill or Cure Anthologies Nice To See You: Homage To Ted Berrigan and Out Of This World The World rasas . There were amazing sparks happening between the works, between the generations. There were ongoing correspondences with many of the writers inside. Ted’s Homage also included many who were speaking to Ted Berrigan and to one another. These are important unwieldy uncompromised documents of an historic urban literary culture. I felt like a mother as I compiled them. The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics Bombay Gin , the student-run magazine is only receiving submissions anonymously. We think this is healthy practice. The Work Prajna , or wisdom, in Tibetan Buddhist psychology is generally considered the feminine priciple, and upaya , or skillful means, the masculine principle. Both come into play in any act of life, or invention. My imaginings in words are predisposed out of a woman’s body, heard in this ear, mouthed by some kind of girl-hag. But my mind frequently travels in a man’s body in dreams. I’m interested in any and all magics of mind and arrangement.

67. Anne Waldman Quote
anne waldman, Poète Performer
http://www.nicolepeyrafitte.com/walman.htm
From Poet/Performer Anne Waldman "Nicole Peyrafitte is a brilliant and most original performer. Her vocalizations, her song, her gestures are provocative: both stunningly beautiful and powerfully unnerving at times. She is the chthonic goddess come to tempt you, scare you, transform you. She is in the poetic lineage of Greek tragedy, Café Voltaire antics, of dada and surrealist play but with a post-modern, hip sensibility. I am transfixed when she's on stage." - 07/2003
- 07/2003 back to reviews

Winter 1998/1999 Ann Waldman Fast Speaking Woman . It's the name of Anne Waldman's 1975 book of chants and essays, but it's a fitting epithet for the poet herself. Waldman exudes energy, on and off the page. She has been a ceaseless proselytizer for poetry, first at the St. Mark's Poetry Project, and now at the Jack Kerouac School for Disembodied Poetics, which she founded with Allen Ginsberg. A committed performer, she travels the globe giving readings of legendary intensity. Waldman's numerous books include Blue Mosque Kill or Cure , and Nice to See You: Homage to Ted Berrigan . In 1993, Coffee House Press published the first volume of her epic poem Iovis; subtitled "All is Full of Jove," the work tackles the male godhead head on. In Iovis Book II , published last year, she continues to employ verbal strategies that range from breezy colloquialism to hermetic sacred text. And the poem shows no signs of letting up. The following interview, is excerpted in Vol. 3, No. 4. by Eric Lorberer RT: It recently struck me that you're often described as a performance poet, as if this is an entirely different kind of poet-is it?

Book Center Anne Waldman Anne Waldman has worked her magic on audiences throughout the United States and around the world. She has worked and performed with a number of well-known musicians, composers and dancers, and has collaborated with visual artists. Waldman has been acknowledged as a major voice in American poetry. Her goal for her poetry is simple, and yet anything but simple to achieve. She says, in effect, that what she is attempting to do on the page is to give readers not "a refined gist" or "an extrapolation" of feeling, thought and emotion, but an actual "experience" of "a high moment." Waldman is attempting to bring to poetry on the page the same kind of immediacy and sense of immersion that she brings to her poetry in public performance.

This book reminds me of Sei Shonagon, but the cast of characters is often well-known Beat writers. Kyger was married to Beat saint Gary Snyder at the time, but she is iconoclastic in regards to presenting him here. The arc of the book is their love story beginning with a shy and rather impressed Kyger and ending with a rather loud and irreverent Kyger. Early on she worships Snyder, but then he knocks her down and splits her head open on a wood table when she refuses to do the dishes. He is...

Female Beats wrote poetry, took drugs, went on the road, listened to jazz, and lived on the fringe just as the men did, but their accomplishments are not as widely recognized. This volume attempts to correct this oversight by profiling 40 women of the Beat generation and publishing samples of their work. Well-known poets Diane di Prima and Denise Levertov appear in the volume, along with the muses of male writers and other women who never became famous at all. As Brenda Knight notes in her i...
