Wallace Stevens On His Way To Work
    David Wagoner
He would leave early and walk slowly
    As if balancing books
On the way to school, already expecting
To be tardy once again and heavy
    With numbers, the unfashionably rounded
Toes of his shoes invisible beyond
The slope of his corporation. He would pause
    At his favorite fundamentally sound
Park bench, which had been the birthplace
Of paeans and ruminations on other mornings,
And would turn his back to it, having gauged the distance Between his knees and the edge of the hardwood Almost invariably unoccupied At this enlightened hour by the bums of nighttime (For whom the owlish eye of the moon Had been closed by daylight), and would give himself wholly over Backwards and trustingly downwards And be well seated there. He would remove

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Red ink writes final chapter for Poetry Northwest Wednesday, May 1, 2002 By JOHN MARSHALL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER BOOKS REPORTER The death knell is sounding now for Poetry Northwest. After 43 years of publication, the poetry quarterly from the University of Washington is shutting down with its Spring 2002 issue. The longest-running poetry-only publication in the country was given a two-year reprieve by the university amid a financial crisis in 2000, but the magazine's supporters have been unable to locate another source of funding and it will have to cease publication. David Wagoner, the 75-year-old dean of Northwest poets, has edited Poetry Northwest since 1966 and makes that sad annoucement in the latest and last issue with thanks to 10 people by name and a concluding "goodbye and good luck." "If there's anyone to blame, it's me," Wagoner says. "My passion has always been for the poetry, not for the business, and I didn't start serious fund-raising efforts until too late."

The House of Song
Poems by David Wagoner
In The House of Song, celebrated poet David Wagoner offers a hundred new poems in six parts. At turns elegiac, comic, and nostalgic, these poems venture to the seemingly infinitesimal points where people, legends, and culture collide with nature, memory, and action. With characteristic wit and brevity, Wagoner chronicles the material invasions of the natural world, reconsidering Thoreau amid ruminations on voyeurs and destroyers, slug watchers and moth collectors. The House of Song asserts Wagoner's place among the finest of American poets, past and present. Praise for David Wagoner: "[Wagoner's] study of American nostalgias is as eloquent as that of James Wright, and like Wright's poetry carries on some of the deepest currents in American verse." Harold Bloom "David Wagoner seems to me one of our best poets, perhaps one of the best we have ever had in this country." Robert Boyers, Kenyon Review "Wagoner has the visual acuity of his loved hawks and a lifelong absorption with living and growing things. A lovely wit and a lively intelligence inform these poems." Maxine Kumin "Wagoner's poetry often instructs us how to behave in a natural world that has become starkly foreign." John Taylor

Poetry
founded in 1912 by Harriet Monroe, is published monthly by the Modern Poetry Association. Joseph Parisi, its editor, explained its editorial philosophy in the 75th anniversary issue of the magazine, published in 1987: POETRY continues in service to poetry ... by trying to represent, as Stephen Spender has said 'the best, and simply the best' poems being written today. "Literary editors are often asked about the selection policies of their publications. An editor of POETRY POETRY "This attitude holds and the invitation it implies still stands. In recent years, the number of poems received at these offices has reached upwards of 60,000 [now 80,000] annually. As always, the quality of the work, not its source, is what POETRY editors look for."
