    A Letter Home
In a bad year, my father went away
A hundred miles to take the only job
He could find. Two nights a week he would sit down
In his boardinghouse after a hard shift
In the open hearth and write a duty letter.
He hated telephones, being hard of hearing
And hard of speaking and just as hard of spending
Now that he had to save our car and our house
And feed us from long distance. He knew words Of all kinds, knew them cold in Latin And Greek, from crossword puzzles and cryptograms, But hardly any of them would come from his mouth Or find their way onto paper. He wrote my mother Short plain sentences about the weather And, folded inside each single page, for me, In colored pencils, a tracing of a cartoon From the funny papers: Popeye or Barney Google Or Mutt and Jeff or the Katzenjammer Kids. The voice-balloons hanging over their heads Said, "Hope to see you soon" or "Hello, David."

    David Wagoner
may not necessarily be my favorite poet, but I own eleven of his books of poetry, at least six more books than by any other poet.
Maybe it is simply because I was young and impressionable then and, no matter what he was teaching, he was as mesmerizing as Burt Lancaster in The Rainmaker . Anyone who can write lines like:
God bless me? Me be one for the cloud-capped, holy-
For showbiz, smug, sharkskinny, hog-certain, flowery Chosen
Harping for glory? Thumbs-upping glissandos on pure-gold G-strings?
could certainly hold my attention no matter what he was saying.
He saw the world in ways I, having been trapped in institutions, of learning my whole life, had never seen at 18 and 21 years of age.
Today, though, his poems probably appeal to me because they capture feelings associated with our common experiences, particularly those connected with the Northwest outdoors, as in the following poem.
    Enchanted Wilderness GETTING THERE
You take a final step and, look, suddenly

Briefly, the BaBar Experiment will study CP -Violation in the system of B -Anti B heavy quark states ( i.e. , BaBar will study why matter and antimatter decay differently; this impacts on the question of why the universe is presently known to be composed primarily of matter, when matter and anti-matter were supposedly produced in equal quantities at the Big Bang). One way to visualize by analogy the idea of CP -Violation is that antimatter can be thought of as like a mirror image of matter-except that this mirror is not perfectly flat, but has small ripples in it about the size of 1 part in 10 billion, so that the image in the mirror ( i.e. , antimatter) is not exactly like the original object being reflected ( i.e.

Lost Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place around you,
If you leave it you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
