Viking Press Susan Vreeland follows her two bestselling novels with a lavish historical tale about a pioneering woman artist In her latest novel, Susan Vreeland brings to life this fiercely independent and underappreciated figure. From illegal potlatches in tribal communities to prewar Paris, where her art was exhibited in the famed Salon d'Automne, Carr's story is as arresting as it is vibrant. Vreeland tells it with gusto and suspense, giving vivid portraits of Carr and the unconventional people to whom she was inevitably drawn: Sophie, a native basket maker; Harold, the son of missionaries, who embraces indigenous cultures; Fanny, a New Zealand artist who spends a summer with Carr painting in the French countryside; and Claude, a French fur trader who steals her heart. The result is a glorious novel that will appeal to lovers of art, native cultures, and lush historical fiction. top of the page Had you ever heard of Emily Carr before reading The Forest Lover? Why do you think an artist who has been considered Canada's national treasure is so little known south of the U.S.-Canadian border? Are you now inspired to know more about her and her work?

Recently rediscovered by art historians, and one of the few female post-Renaissance painters to achieve fame during her own era, Artemisia Gentileschi led a remarkably "modern" life. Susan Vreeland tells Artemisia's captivating story, beginning with her public humiliation in a rape trial at the age of eighteen, and continuing through her father's betrayal, her marriage of convenience, motherhood, and growing fame as an artist. Set against the glorious backdrops of Rome, Florence, Genoa, and Naples, inhabited by historical characters such as Galileo and Cosimo de' Medici II, and filled with rich details about life as a seventeenth-century painter, Vreeland creates an inspiring story about one woman's lifelong struggle to reconcile career and family, passion and genius. top of the page Sometimes, it's too easy to assume that in centuries past, women were victims of gender prejudice and limitations. What negative events in Artemisia's experience were caused by her own thinking and actions? What better decisions could she have made? What advantages did Artemisia have as a woman? Orazio is seen by Artemisia as the cause of her misfortunes. To what degree is this a fair assessment? How did the attitudes and strictures of the time influence him? Limit his alternatives? Blind him?

  • "The Passion of Artemisia" by Susan Vreeland In this novel about a real-life female Renaissance painter, a thin veneer of feminism covers a juicy heart of blushing, throbbing melodrama. By Stephanie Zacharek Have a look at this passage in which Artemisia, frustrated by the lack of sexual attention shown to her by her gruff, philandering husband, confronts him with memories of a rare, recent exploit, in which the two climbed a tall belltower the better to gaze down upon the dome of the Florence Cathedral (after which they rushed home in the rain to make mad, passionate love that would shiver the timbers of the Sistine Chapel): "Nothing? Was it nothing that made you get drenched in a storm? Nothing that made you climb halfway to Heaven on a whim of mine? Nothing when you covered my throat with kisses, pressed your hardness against me next to God's own dome?" document.write('');

    "La ragazza in blu" di Susan Vreeland - Neri Pozza Editore - euro 14,00 "Ho solo visto i treni. Non sapevo altro".
    Un vecchio, prima di morire, cerca, di spogliarsi della sua pelle di colpevole, come un serpente nel periodo della muta, e di spiegare al figlio come sia entrato in possesso di un quadro di Vermeer, "la ragazza in blu"... Elisabetta Caravati 5 aprile 2004 Il quadro e' stato preso dal vecchio in una casa di una famiglia ebrea deportata; in quella casa erano rimasti un bambino nascosto in una credenza sotto un mucchio di tovaglie e dietro una pila di piatti, un servizio da the ed un quadro. Il lurido bambino ebreo, con una pedata, venne mandato insieme agli altri ebrei, il quadro e il servizio da the, rimasero la', nella casa. Quando il soldato torno' nella casa, il servizio da the era sparito e lui prese il quadro, nonostante una legge dicesse che tutte le collezioni d'arte di proprieta' dei giudei dovevano essere depositate presso una societa'. Ma quella non era una collezione, era solo un quadro, uno solo!
    Il figlio inorridito ascolta il racconto del padre, sa perfettamente che le responsabilita' di coloro che consegnarono le vittime alla morte non furono (e non sono) inferiori alle responsabilita' e alla colpe di coloro che uccisero; per questo vorrebbe, alla morte del vecchio, bruciare il quadro della ragazza in blu, per poter, in qualche modo, espiare le colpe di suo padre. Ma poi si chiede se sia o non sia giusto distruggere un quadro che appartiene di diritto all'umanita', un pezzo importante del patrimonio mondiale dell'arte; distruggerlo, forse sarebbe soltanto un atto crudele, crudele come crudeli furono gli atti compiuti da suo padre. Capisce che per lui e' di fondamentale importanza che qualcuno riconosca l'autenticita' di quel quadro, solo poi riuscirebbe a distruggerlo; distruggerlo e porre fine alla storia di quel quadro appartenuto prima di lui a suo padre e prima alla famiglia ebrea e prima ancora ad altri...

    NANCY MEHL - The reviews of Girl in Hyacinth Blue have been very positive. To what do you attribute the success of this novel?
    SUSAN VREELAND
    - The positive response to Girl in Hyacinth Blue has been a surprise, and a delight, to me. Perhaps many people have, in their own families, a painting or a hand-made item that means something to them. If so, they can imagine, like I did, the provenance of how that precious thing came to them, and how it has passed through many lives. Perhaps also, Vermeer represents calm and tranquility in our fast-paced lives. His work reminds me of Wordsworth's line: "With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and by the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things."
