The Passion of Artemisia
by Jennifer C., New City, NY

Set in the heart of Renaissance Italy, The Passion of Artemisia follows the life of renowned artist Artemisia Gentileschi.
Artemisia is publicly shunned from Roman society for her "participation" (as the victim) in a statutory rape. The rapist - her painting teacher and father's friend - is not charged, and is set free. However, Artemisia is forced into a loveless, arranged marriage to save her (and her father's) reputations as distinguished artists. Her husband, also an aspiring artist, at first treats Artemisia with compassion but as she becomes more successful, he becomes jealous.
This novel traces 20 years of her struggles and grievances as she aspires to become one of the first great female painters in history.
This novel is an inspiring stroke of genius which I recommend to everyone, but especially feminists. The real Artemisia was the first woman to be accepted into the Florentine Accademia dell' Arte del Disegno. She defines the modern woman, a woman with ambition who is not afraid to go for her goals. Creatively written, The Passion of Artemisia links history and fiction.

THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA

Penguin USA
Historical Fiction
ISBN: 0142001821
"My father walked beside me to give me courage, his palm touching gently the back laces of my bodice. In the low-angled glare already baking the paving stones of the piazza and the top of my head, the still shadow of the Inquisitor's noose hanging above the Tor di Nona, the papal court, stretched grotesquely down the wall, its shape the outline of a tear...If, while my hands were bound, I gave again the same testimony as I had the previous weeks, they would know it was the truth and the trial would be over. Not my trial. I kept telling myself that: I was not on trial. Agostino Tassi was on trial."
Artemisia Gentileschi, 18-year-old daughter of painter Orazio Gentileschi and an artist in her own right, soon discovers what many rape victims throughout the centuries have discovered: she is, indeed, on trial.
Contrary to his daughter's wishes and fueled more by anger over a missing painting than by Artemisia's violation, Orazio files an indictment against Agostino Tassi, Artemisia's painting teacher and Orazio's painting collaborator. As THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA opens, Artemisia's predicament becomes painfully clear. It is 1612, a time when a woman's honor is all, no matter if that "honor" was ripped from her by force; a time when a daughter is her father's chattel, and property devalued requires recompense to the property owner himself.
That Artemisia rises above the ordeal of the rape trial and its communal consequences to become a well-known painter in post-Renaissance Italy says much about the strength of her character. That her basic story is true makes it even more remarkable.

The trouble is that she lives in Victoria, British Columbia at the turn of the twentieth century. Females in business are maligned, especially one who would make a living at painting. Emily Carr is such a woman, a woman far ahead of her time. Vreeland examines the emotional makeup of a woman who goes against the protocol of decency for a well-bred girl in Victoria. She embarrasses her three sisters by her repeated forays into the wilderness north of Vancouver to paint native Indian tribal people and their totems. She is obsessed with the idea of picturing them on canvas to preserve a dying heritage. None are interested in her venture, and her sisters are defiant in their resolve against her work. Despite their objections, Carr ventures forth into the Canadian wilderness to paint trees, totems and the people she learns to love. Her best friend and soul mate is an Indian mother, Sophie Frank. Sophie is an artist in her own right; she makes baskets to sell in Victoria. A Christian, she uses her proceeds to purchase gravestone markers for her dead children. who have fallen to "white men's diseases."

An Interview with Susan Vreeland By Meredith Allard Susan Vreeland is the author of the much-loved, best-selling novels Girl in Hyacinth Blue and The Passion of Artemesia . Her novels can be purchased at amazon.com , and you can visit her online M.A.: What inspired you to write Girl in Hyacinth Blue ? Why do you think Vermeer's paintings have been the catalyst for several novels? S.V.: In 1996, a few weeks after attending Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. Wanting to fill my eyes and thoughts with beauty as I began chemotherapy, I pored over art books and absorbed the placidness of Monet's garden, the sparkling color of the Impressionists, the strength and solidity of Michelangelo's figures showing the titanic power of humans at one with God, and the serene Dutch women in Johannes Vermeer's interiors. These women took on added significance because I had a Dutch name. It was comforting, in case I had to leave this world, to find, through them, my heritage and place of origin, and perhaps something of the strength of Dutch character. I began to recognize that art can emerge from extremity. In my case, long, uninterrupted days free from teaching high school became a gift which resulted in Girl in Hyacinth Blue Paintings with people feed my imagination. Who sat as model for the artist? I always wonder. What was their relationship? Did any urge for physical intimacy pass between them or was their coming together at this moment in time merely a business transaction? Was there a deeper aesthetic collaboration? Was the painter sick with dread over how he would feed his family? What did his children want from him that day? Was his wife happy? Was he? Was he contented with his work?

INTRODUCTION Susan Vreeland has become known to readers everywhere as an exquisite and passionate chronicler of historical paintings and their painters. In Girl in Hyacinth Blue , she takes us on a unique and intimate journey following a single Vermeer painting as it moves through many generations, deeply affecting the lives of ordinary people. Then in The Passion of Artemisia , Vreeland brings us from painting to painter, letting us see into the heart of an artist, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652), and what it takes to live an impassioned life. Now, with The Forest Lover , Vreeland explores not only the themes of art, passion, sacrifice, and love but also the importance of art in an individual life and its greater meaning in the world, as she tells the story of Canadian painter Emily Carr (1871-1945). The Forest Lover But it is not just freedom she seeks here. On these Indian reserves Emily, always the outsider, feels most at home. And as she begins to paint the land and scenes of Indian culture, she finds herself connecting ever more deeply with its people. She befriends Sophie, a Squamish basket maker who has lost several children and who sells her wares to buy Christian headstones for their graves. Although this surprises Emily, she finds Sophie's unwavering faith in the face of adversity inspiring, and she works even harder. Emily's spirituality grows along with her skill as a painter, as she comes to believe that God, the people, and the land are all one. "God breathes in the forest," Emily says later in the novel.

BACK Sharp on Target: Susan Vreeland Author Susan Vreeland tells us: "After graduating from San Diego State University, I taught high school English in the San Diego City Schools since 1969, adding ceramics in 1986, retiring recently after a 30-year career. Concurrent with teaching, I began writing features for newspapers and magazines in 1980, taking up subjects in art, travel, education, and skiing, and publishing 250 articles. I ventured into fiction in 1988 with What Love Sees, a biographical novel of a woman's unwavering determination to lead a normal life despite blindness. The book was made into a CBS television movie starring Richard Thomas and Annabeth Gish. Though currently out of print, an audio tape is available from Recorded Books, [ISBN 0-7887-0645-4], 1-800-638-1304. Visit Susan's website Susan Vreeland Long before Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo, the American woman painter Emily Carr (1871-1945) first blazed a path for modern women artists. Throwing aside the chains of late Victorian culture, not without much pain and distress, Emily Carr became a major force in modern art when modern art itself was embryonic.
