Title: Forest Lover. Description: NY: Viking, 2004. 1st ed/1st printing. It was Emily Carr (1871–1945)—not Georgia O’Keeffe or Frida Kahlo—who first blazed a path for modern women artists. Overcoming the confines of late Victorian culture, Carr became a major force in modern art. Her boldly original landscapes are praised today for capturing an untamed British Columbia—and its indigenous peoples—just before industrialization would change it forever. SIGNED Hardcover. The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland
[read excerpt] Christian Science Monitor review by Ron Charles Milwaukee Journal Sentinel review by Catherine Parnell Portland Oregonian review by Maya Muir ... January Magazine review by Linda Richards The Forest Lover is Susan Vreeland's fictionalized account of the life of Canadian artist Emily Carr. She painted at a time where her native British Columbia was being industrialized and the Canadian government was actively trying to eradicate Indian cultures. Rebelling against the Victorian restrictions of the time, Emily Carr spent much of time in the forest trying to capture a way of life that was quickly disappearing. Her paintings paved the way for other modern women artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo. The Forest Lover has received mostly positive reviews with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel saying, "Writing with insight and authority, Vreeland summons Carr from beyond the grave. The intimate connection between writer and subject deepens as the novel progresses, yet Vreeland's authorial tone is as quiet as an individual in a museum."

"The Passion of Artemisia"
This past spring, my book club chose to discuss Susan Vreeland's Girl in Hyacinth Blue . The meeting was to be my first since having a baby, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I consider myself an amateur art historian, consequently, I eagerly anticipated the discussion. The other members of the group also enjoyed the book and our discussion flowed freely. About halfway through, I piped up with some comment about how difficult it must have been for Griet to have abandoned work in the Vermeer house to life with a butcher. The other women looked at me worriedly. My friend, Michelle, finally rescued me. "Shannon," she said in a voice not unlike one would use with a pre-schooler who just mixed up Clifford and Barney, "you're thinking of Girl with a Pearl Earring . So much for my re-entry into intelligent adult life. You might think the unusual convergence of ideas that independently produced two such similar novels might scare any author away from again delving into the world of art history. It didn't however, scare Susan Vreeland, whose latest novel

AUTHOR INTERVIEW Dec. 2, 2002
The Essential Vermeer : Why did you use painting, rather than another form of art to explore the relationship between art and life?
Susan Vreeland : Though not an art historian, I'm more familiar with painting than other art forms, having had painters in my distant family and growing up surrounded by them, so I was naturally attracted thereto. Also, paintings have been more accessible to me through the wealth of art books published currently. Galileo wrote that painting, which is a two dimensional form, is a higher achievement in replicating life than sculpture which is already a three-dimensional form and therefore requires less of its maker. An interesting thesis, but it does not account for the emotional or spiritual context of a work, only its qualities of physical representation. By the sheer volume of paintings I've encountered, it's natural that I turned to them, though I've had reactions just as moving to some pieces of sculpture by Rodin, Bernini and Michelangelo.

Artemisia is taught to paint, from a very early age, by her father Orazio. Her father's friend, Agostino Tassi, who teaches her as well, rapes her repeatedly. Orazio decides to accuse Agostino publicly, forcing her daughter to undergo a long and painful trial, in which she sustains torture and a public vaginal examination, meant to prove or disprove her claims. Artemisia holds her grounds despite the pain and pressures but her father eventually betrays her by dropping the charges against Tassi. Artemisia demands reparation from her father. Since her rape and its public knowledge renders her quite unmarriageable, her father makes amends by finding her a husband, a painter from Florence. After a swift wedding ceremony, Artemisia goes to Florence, but soon her marriage is put to the test: though Pietro Stiattesi tolerates that she spends her days painting, he begins resenting her when her career takes off. Jealous, he cannot forgive her for being accepted at the Accademia (she is the first woman to enter it) before him. But as Artemisia will learn later, her marriage was doomed from the start...

http://www.januarymagazine.com/fiction/forestlover.html
The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland Published by Viking 331 pages, 2004 Buy it online Appreciative Appropriation Reviewed by Linda Richards Historical novelists have a lot of decisions to make. Not just about what story to tell or even how to tell it, but about which slices of a life need to be illuminated to provide readers with the fullest, richest impact. Skillful novelists know just how to make those slices: the decisions they make are good ones. Less skillful novelists, not so much. It's only one of the things that sets the two groups apart. Clearly, Susan Vreeland is a skillful novelist. More: relatively early in her writing career, Vreeland has discovered her oeuvre. The author of Girl In Hyacinth Blue and The Passion of Artemsia knows her way around the art world. She understands the difference between looking and seeing, knows the subtleties of burnt umber and sienna. And, most important of all, Vreeland truly gets the off-kilter way that artists view the world. Artists aren't like other people. Vreeland embraces this. And, in a very positive way, exploits it.

INTRODUCTION
"Why does the world need another painting of a woman alone in a room? Or a hundred more paintings?" "The world doesn't know all that it needs yet," Pieter said, "but there will come a time when another of your paintings of a woman by a window will provide something." Such is the case of the Vermeer painting, Girl in Hyacinth Blue ABOUT SUSAN VREELAND Susan Vreeland's short fiction has appeared in journals such as New England Review The Missouri Review Confrontation Calyx , and Alaska Quarterly Review . Her first novel What Love Sees , was broadcast as a CBS Sunday night movie in 1996. She has taught English Literature, creative writing, and art in the San Diego Unified School District for thirty years. Praise "Intelligent, searching and unusual, the novel is filled with luminous moments; like the painting it describes so well, it has a way of lingering in the reader's mind."
The New York Times Book Review "A pleasant surprise from the very beginning."

THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA
by Susan Vreeland
add to cart
INTRODUCTION What would it take for a woman to be a famous painter in Baroque Italy? Talent. Passion. Determination. Good fortune. Artemisia Gentileschi had all but one. In my previous novel, Girl in Hyacinth Blue , Magdalena, the fictional daughter of Johannes Vermeer, longed to paint. With the eye of an artist she imagined a painting of the moment of her father's death, "but the task was too fearsome. She lacked the skill, and the one to teach her had never offered." But what if someone had offered? When I learned that a well known Italian Baroque painter, Orazio Gentileschi, did teach his daughter, Artemisia, I was fascinated. That she produced works of startling invention which took the Baroque spirit of exuberance to its height, that she expressed a feminist sensibility in painting strong heroines caught in moments of danger or tension, thinking and acting against the grain, that she was the first woman to be admitted into the Accademia dell' Arte in Florence, the first woman to make her living solely by her brush all this was more than I'd hoped for. And when I read that she had been raped at seventeen by her father's friend and collaborator, her second teacher, I knew there was a story here.
