tasks. The creator of the original engineering handbook was a first century BCE Roman architect, named Marcus vitruvius Pollio.
http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/project/vit/www/vitruvius.html
ARGELY as a rallying cry, the term software engineering was coined in 1969 to name a NATO workshop on software development. Since then many have criticized the use of the word engineering to describe modern software production, since it has so little in common with mature engineering disciplines. One mark of a mature engineering discipline is separation of routine from innovative design. In the beginning of an engineering discipline's life, a few people with vision bring a new kind of product into the world. In this period, every act of creation is a virtuosic performance; every design is innovative. But as the field matures, practioners gain experience, and building the product becomes more routine, less costly, and less error-prone. Once the field is established, most design work is routine, and ordinary practioners are capable of doing it. These practioners innovate only when necesary.
For design practice to make the transition from innovative to routine, design knowledge must be captured, organized, and disseminated. Handbooks are a popular means of doing this. One example, Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook , is a tome several inches thick, filled with tables, diagrams, and schematics that cover topics from the basics of the metric system to the intricate innards of heat pumps. In the bulk of the text, noted practioners give useful, specific advice about the standard solutions to common design tasks.

CATAPULTS IN GREEK AND ROMAN ANTIQUITY
CATAPULT FRAME AFTER VITRUVIUS In the 10th volume of his work the Roman architect and technician Vitruvius gave a detailed description of
arrow-shooting and stone-throwing catapults ( scorpiones and ballista e). There we find also the ancient latin
technical terms of the catapult parts. Vitruvius published his work under Augustus, about BC 20.
The central component of every arrow-shooting catapult was the frame (latin capitulum ), holding the two torsion
springs. The following reconstruction drawing shows the frame as seen by the crew.

Latin technical terms in the text of Vitruvius (English translation after E.W. Marsden 1971)
Some terms are borrowed words from the Greek language, because the early catapults were invented and
developed by the Greek and only later taken over by the Romans.
Frame capitulum washer modiolus lever e pizygis hole carrier peritretes side-stanchion parastas centre-stanchion parastas media arm bracchium rope-coil rudentes The hole-carrier was a horizontal timber strut carrying two circular holes for each of the two rope-coils of the torsion springs. For better strength the strut often was reinforced by iron fittings.

Vitruvius
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman writer architect and engineer , active in the 1st century BC. He is the author of De Architectura, known today as The Ten Books of Architecture, a treatise in Latin on architecture , and perhaps the first work about this discipline. Mainly known for his writings, Vitruvius was himself an architect; Frontinus says he was in charge of the aqueducts of Rome. He is often colloquially referred to as the first architect Among notable concepts contained in De Architectura (probably written between 23 and 27 B.C.), Vitruvius declares that quality depends on the social relevance of the artist 's work, not on the form or workmanship of the work itself. Perhaps the most famous declaration from De Architectura is one still bandied in architectural circles: "Well building hath three conditions: firmness, commodity, and delight." This quote is taken from Sir Henry Wotton 's translation of 1624, and there is some debate about whether it is a direct translation or a paraphrase of Vitruvius' meaning. Nonetheless, it is most often attributed to Vitruvius, rather than to Wotton. Vitruvius' work is one of many examples of Latin texts that owe their survival to the palace scriptorium of Charlemagne in the early ninth century . Chapter 10. Vitruvius (Lime)
Sand and its sources having been thus treated, next with regard to lime we must be careful that it is burned from a stone which, whether hard or soft, is in any case white. Lime made of close-grained stone of the harder sort will be good in structural parts; lime of porous stone in stucco. After slaking it, mix your mortar, if using pitsand, in the proportion of three parts of sand to one of lime; if using river or sea-sand, mix two parts of sand with one of lime. These will be the right proportions for the composition of the mixture. Further, in using river or sea-sand, the addition of a third part composed of burnt brick, pounded up and sifted, will make your mortar of a better composition to use. The reason why lime makes a solid structure on being combined with water and sand seems to be this: that rocks, like all other bodies, are composed of the four elements. Those which contain a larger proportion of air, are soft; of water, are tough from the moisture; earth, hard; and of fire, more brittle. Therefore, if limestone, without being burned, is merely pounded up small and then mixed with sand and so put into the work, the mass does not solidify nor can it hold together. But if the stone is first thrown into the kiln, it loses its former property of solidity by exposure to the great heat of the fire, and so with its strength burned out and set free, and only a residuum of heat being left lying in it, if the stone is then immersed in water, the moisture, before the water can feel the influence of the fire, makes its ways into the open pores; then the stone begins to get hot, and finally, after it cools off, the heat is rejected from the body of the lime.

M arcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman ARCHITECT and ENGINEER in the 1st Century B.C.E. who wrote the treatise the Ten Books on Architecture for the reigning Caesar, which is popularly regarded as "the oldest and most influential work on architecture in existence." (
In the text Vitruvius outlines the realm of ARCHITECTURE to include understanding nature, city planning, building materials, ARCHITECTURAL design, the origins of ARCHITECTURAL elements, building typologies, paints, aqueducts and wells, planetary movement and the zodiac, sundials and water clocks, and finally, about ARCHITECTURAL machines.
In all, Vitruvius demonstrates the need for the ARCHITECT to achieve a general understanding of nature, the BUILT ENVIRONMENT , and humanity so as to build holistically, "with due reference to durability, convenience, and beauty." (
In Book I, for example, it is stated that ARCHITECTURAL education is to include both theory and practice, manual skill and scholarship: "Let [the

Vitruvius: Ten Books on Architecture > Customer Review #1: Too many liberties taken with the intent of the text

First off, I should note that I find this version of Vitruvius far more useful than many others, especially in the clearly noted diagrams, explanations of measurement units, and so forth. The editor and translators have done a good job of this aspect of Vitruvius Pollios work. However, the translators appear to have taken a few liberties with the text. First, since Vitruvius is a historical work as well as a canon of Classicism, an honest modern-day translation must relate not only to its period, but also to subsequent periods in order to be understood in terms of the nearer to present and Vitruvius own time. The translators choice of ridding the text of the translation "the Orders" for Vitruvius original choice of "genus" is bad enough, but when you observe that this translation has been rendered as "type" instead, it has the potential of blending in with unintended references in the text to type as well as being confused with common modern/Modernist discursions into what type is. The translators should have indicated their theories about what they thought would be a correct interpretation of the Roman word "genus" at the beginning of their notes, not by making a deliberate decision to diverge from the customary content of the text.
