Roman architect, engineer, and theorist, whose textbook De Architectura libri decem (Ten Books on Architecture) is the only complete treatise on architecture to survive from Classical Antiquity. It influenced deeply from the Early Renaissance onwards artists, thinkers, and architects, among them Leon Battista Alberti (1404-72), Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519), and Michelangelo (1475-1564). Vitruvius was not a master of style - "he has all the marks of one unused to composition, to whom writing is a painful task," said later Morris Hicky Morgan, who translated the book into English. "It was a wise and useful provision of the ancients to transmit their thoughts to posterity by recording them in treatises, so that they should not be lost, but, being developed in succeeding generations through publication in books, should gradually attain in later times, to the highest refinement of learning. And so the ancients deserve no ordinary, but unending thanks, because they did not pass on in envious silence, but took care that their ideas of every kind should be transmitted to the future in their writings." (from The Ten Books on Architecture , trans. by Morris Hicky Morgan, 1914)

M. Vitruvius Pollio and the Analemma
In De Architectura , Book IX, Chapter VII, Vitruvius explains how to construct a diagram called the analemma , from which a sundial for any season of the year can be laid out. My text is that of the Loeb Classical Library, edited and translated by Frank Granger, pages 248-255, illustrated by Plate L. The translation proceeds well through the construction of the first part of the diagram, that shown in Plate L, but then falls apart, as the words receive no adequate interpretation. In this article, I want to attempt to explain clearly what Vitruvius was about, and show how to complete the analemma . I shall lay out the drawing in a modern style for ease of comprehension. The exact form of Vitruvius's analemma cannot be determined from the text., but this construction was well-known at the time, and Vitruvius is merely explaining it for the student. Diodorus, a contemporary of Vitruvius and a maker of sundials, wrote on the analemma , as later did Ptolemy. Ptolemy's work is known only in fragments, but involved the orthogonal projection of the celestial sphere on three mutually perpendicular planes [Ivor Thomas, Greek Mathematical Works

A Green Vitruvius - Principles and Practice of Sustainable Architectural Design
Two thousand years ago the Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio wrote the first books on architecture and established the concept of the pattern book offering design principles and solutions that is still familiar today. This publication is a green pattern book for today. A Green Vitruvius is a wonderful resource that certainly lives up to its subtitle … Environmental Building News
… the book provides an excellent holistic approach to the subject … Eco Tech … The Architectural Review Green, or sustainable, or environmentally-friendly architecture is not simply an environmental benefit. It is place-sensitive; in a globalising world it leads to location-specific architecture by responding to local climatic conditions and using local materials. It also offers better architectural quality with more natural and fewer artificial inputs; not only is less more, less is also beautiful.

Vitruvius The Ten Books on Architecture
(Translated by Morris Hicky Morgan, in 1914, edited by Tom Turner in 2000. A full online translation of Vitruvius is available at the Latin Library , and there is discussion on the Britanica website This is the first and most famous text in the history of western landscape architecture, architecture, enginering and town planning. In Roman times the architect was, from the word’s Greek etymology, a ‘chief technician’. The Ten Books' Contents list reveals that most aspects of engineering, including harbours, site planning, clocks, aqueducts, pumps and siege engines, come with the author's technical scope. Only a tiny proportion of these subjects come within the twenty-first century scope of ‘architecture’. Vitruvius Pollio’s treatise De Architectura , was written circa 27 BC and is the only book of its kind to survive from antiquity. These online extracts from Vitruvius comprise the first Book and his comments on what we would now classify as garden design.

VITRUVIUS The treatise De Architectura Libri Decem is dedicated to Augustus. Lost for a long time, it was rediscovered in the 15th century at St Gall; the oldest existing MS. dates from the 10th century. From the early Renaissance down to a comparatively recent time the influence of this treatise has been remarkably great. Throughout the period of the classical revival in all probability, constituted an essential feature in the Scottish forts. Except on the hypothesis of buttresses of a similar kind, it is impossible to explain the vast quantities of loose stones which are found both inside and outside many of the vitrified walls. ONTWERPSYSTEMEN EN VITRUVIUS' TERMINOLOGIE. *)
M.C. Kosian
Inleiding
"Architecture depends on Order, Arrangement, Eurythmy, Symmetry, Propriety, and Economy.", aldus Vitruvius I.II.1.
