Vitruvius
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman writer architect and engineer , active in the 1st century BC. He is the author of De Architectura, known today as The Ten Books of Architecture, a treatise in Latin on architecture , and perhaps the first work about this discipline. Mainly known for his writings, Vitruvius was himself an architect; Frontinus says he was in charge of the aqueducts of Rome. He is often colloquially referred to as the first architect Among notable concepts contained in De Architectura (probably written between 27 and 23 B.C.), Vitruvius declares that quality depends on the social relevance of the artist 's work, not on the form or workmanship of the work itself. Perhaps the most famous declaration from De Architectura is one still bandied in architectural circles: "Well building hath three conditions: firmness, commodity, and delight." This quote is taken from Sir Henry Wotton 's translation of 1624, and there is some debate about whether it is a direct translation or a paraphrase of Vitruvius' meaning. Nonetheless, it is most often attributed to Vitruvius, rather than to Wotton.

    Modellieren

Vitruvius [vitr OO E u s] Pronunciation Key Vitruvius (Marcus Vitruvius Pollio), fl. late 1st cent. B.C. and early 1st cent. A.D. , Roman writer, engineer, and architect for the Emperor Augustus. In his one extant work, De architectura (c. 40 B.C. , tr. 1914), he discussed in 10 encyclopedic chapters aspects of Roman architecture, engineering, and city planning. Vitruvius also included a section on human proportions. Because it is the only antique treatise on architecture to have survived, De architectura has been an invaluable source of information for scholars. The rediscovery of Vitruvius during the Renaissance greatly fueled the revival of classicism during that and subsequent periods. Numerous architectural treatises were based in part or inspired by Vitruvius, beginning with Leon Battista Alberti's De re aedificatoria See M. H. Morgan

Vitruvius' work is one of many examples of Latin texts that owe their survival to the palace scriptorium of Charlemagne in the early ninth century . (This activity of finding and recopying classical manuscripts is called the Carolingian Renaissance .) Many of the surviving manuscripts of Vitruvius' work derive from an existing manuscript that was written there, British Library manuscript Harley 2767. Vitruvius studied human proportions (third book) and his canones were later resumed in a very famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci Homo Vitruvianus ). The 16th century architect Palladio considered him his master and guide, and made some drawings based on Vitruvius's rules for architecture before conceiving his own ones.

Translated by Frank Granger Vitruvius' classic work on architecture is the only book of its kind to survive antiquity. Vitruvius was himself an architect and engineer, but this is not a handbook for professionals; rather it serves readers who want to understand architecture. Book 1 discusses town planning and architecture in general; Book 2, building materials; 3 and 4, temples and the architectural orders; 5, other civic buildings; 6, houses; 7, pavements, mosaics, and wall decoration; 8, water supply; 9, measurements; 10, machines. In his preface Vitruvius takes note of the "eminent dignity" of the public buildings Augustus constructed, which express "the majesty of the empire." OTHER HARVARD BOOKS BY VITRUVIUS

Textual Imaginations : Vitruvius in Archaeological [Re] Constructions.
    by Daniel M. Millette.
    Abstract.
In the past, architects and archaeologists have often looked to the writings of Vitruvius to understand the monuments of classical antiquity. Yet we know that Vitruvius was one individual living at a particular moment in time, whose writings could not have represented the whole of antiquity's architectural thought. The practice of theoretically [re]constructing monuments according to his design tenets continues in spite of knowing that there are gaps between the rhetoric of De architectura libri decem and the built realities of antiquity. The danger of course, lies in relating theoretical [re]constructions to architectural restorations. This is especially relevant in the study of the classical theatre, where archaeologists seem "eager to adjust their evidence to the Vitruvian plan" (Small 1983: 55), while at the same time some architects seem just as eager to "restore the ruin to the artificiality of its imagined original state" (Frampton 1994: 22). In this paper the reasons why architectural historians and archaeologists persist in the practice of [re]constructing ruined monuments in spite of inherent problems are explored. This is an 'invented tradition', to use Hobsbawm's (1983) term, which is based in the epistemology of the Vitruvius
