Virgil (70 BC-19 BC)
Publius Vergilius Maro, 15 October 70 - 19 BC, known in English as Virgil or Vergil, Latin poet, is the author of the Eclogues , the Georgics , and the Aeneid , a narrative poem in twelve books that deserves to be called the Roman Empire's national epic. Born in the village of Andes (modern Pietole), near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul (Gaul "this side", i.e., south of the Alps, present northern Italy), Vergil received his earliest schooling at Cremona and Milan. He then went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy. In this period, while he was in the school of Siro the Epicurean, Vergil began writing poetry. A group of minor poems attributed to the youthful Vergil survive but most are spurious. One, the Catalepton (bagatelles?), consists of fourteen little poems, some of which may be Vergil's, and another, a short narrative poem titled the Culex (the mosquito), was attributed to Vergil as early as the first century AD.

Search all of Virgil Virgil (70 B.C-19 B.C) , regarded as the greatest Roman poet, known for his epic, the Aeneid (written about 29 B.C.E), which had taken its literary model from Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey
Virgil was born on October 15, 70 B.C.E., in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy. Publius Vergilius Maro, or Virgil has influenced Western literature for two millennia, but little is known about the man himself. His father was a prosperous landowner, described variously as a "potter" and a "courier", who could afford thorough education for the future poet. Virgil attended school at Cremona and Milan, and then went to Rome, where he studied mathematics, medicine and rhetoric, and completed his studies in Naples. He entered literary circles as an "Alexandrian," the name given to a group of poets who sought inspiration in the sophisticated work of third-century Greek poets also known as Alexandrians.
After the battle of Philippi in 42 B.C. Virgil's property was confiscated for veterans. According to some sources it was afterwards restored at the command of Octavian (later styled Augustus). In the following years Virgil spent most of his time in Campania and Sicily, but he had also a house at Rome.
Between 42 and 37 B.C.E. Virgil composed pastoral poems known as

If I tell you there is a good horse trail to the beach through the woods, I know because I have ridden the trail myself. About the Eastern Shore of Virginia.. This is one of the last undeveloped areas on the east coast of the United States; many of the people that live here are descendants of the original English stock that settled this country. They stayed here because they had no reason to move on, they had found paradise nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The rich soil is some of the best farmland in the country. Prior to the introduction of irrigation to California and the southwest, the Eastern Shore of Virginia had the most valuable farmland in the country.

Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro) (70 - 19 BC)
Publius Vergilius Maro, known in English as Virgil (or occasionally Vergil, as closer to the Latin), is the greatest of all the Roman poets - and the author of Rome's national epic poem, the Aeneid . He was closely associated with Octavian, who, under the name of Augustus, was the first emperor of Rome; Octavian/Augustus looms large in Virgil's poetry. Virgil was born near Mantua and spent his early life in northern Italy (with perhaps a period at Naples). His first work was the Eclogues ('Selections'), originally known as the Bucolics , published around 39-38 BC; it is a book of ten pastoral poems that relate to the Idylls of the Hellenistic Greek poet Theocritus (third century BC). The Eclogues give an artificial, idealised picture of a world of singing shepherds (the Arcadia of a later European pastoral ideal), but are also filled with references to contemporary political figures and particularly (in 1 and 9) to Octavian's confiscations of land for his veterans (Virgil's own father may have been a victim of this process). The result is a complex mix of ancient Greek bucolics (pastoral poetry), the natural history of northern Italy, and the harsh realities of contemporary Roman politics. Virgil's most famous eclogue is the fourth, the so-called Messianic Eclogue, which until the 19th century was taken as prophesying the birth of Christ; in reality it probably looked to the expected son of Mark Antony and Octavian's sister, Octavia.

VIRGIL GARNETT THOMSON
A s America celebrates the centenary of Virgil Thomson's birth in 1896 with revivals of his works and a new biography in preparation, there is increasing awareness of what a musician's musician this composer and critic truly was. As a composer he created over 150 compositions which skillfully melded indigenous and cosmopolitan influences, while as a writer and lecturer, he devoted himself energetically to elevating musical standards and taste, to creating a wider public for classical music, and to creating a legacy of some of the most elegant, urbane, and intelligent prose that modern music journalism has witnessed.
Returning to Harvard in 1922, he took his degree in 1923. For the next three years he commuted between New York and Boston where he served as organist for the King's Chapel, and he began to contribute serious music journalism to publications like Mencken's American Mercury and Vanity Fair. It was not long, however, before Europe would once again exert its siren call, and for the next sixteen years he would cross the Atlantic frequently. In 1927 he journeyed to Spain to collaborate with Gertrude Stein on their opera, FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS, which they completed in 1928. That same year also produced his SYMPHONY ON A HYMN TUNE, as well as the first of a genre he can be credited with inventing: the musical portrait. FOUR SAINTS received its premiere in Hartford in 1934 with an all-black cast in an extraordinary visual production with choreography by Frederick Ashton. This was followed by a second collaboration with Stein, based on the life of suffragette Susan B. Anthony, THE MOTHER OF US ALL, which premiered in 1946 shortly before Stein's death. In the intervening years Thomson created film and ballet scores as well as incidental music for the theatre and visited Paris until the Nazi occupation forced him to flee. Back in New York in 1940, he settled into his final home, The Chelsea Hotel, and accepted a job as music critic for the Herald Tribune, which he retained until 1954. After his resignation from the paper he devoted himself to a third opera, LORD BYRON, and to writing his autobiography in 1966 and his book AMERICAN MUSIC SINCE 1910 in 1971.
