Although Virgil's family had suffered during the fighting, he is supposed to have presented the completed Georgics (which he'd worked on at approximately a line a day) to the victorious Octavian. It's predominant theme shows agriculture as a metaphor for politics. Jupiter deliberately made life hard for man, so that he could redeem himself through hard work. Sample the Georgics

Virgil Thomson (1896 - 1989)
updated 3 November 2003
Virgil Thomson was a many-faceted American composer of great originality and a music critic of singular brilliance. Born in Kansas City, Missouri on 25 November 1896, Thomson studied at Harvard. After a prolonged period in Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and met Cocteau, Stravinsky, Satie, and the artists of Les Six, he returned to the United States where he was chief music critic for the New York Herald Tribune Virgil Thomson composed in almost every genre of music. Utilizing a musical style marked by sharp wit and overt playfulness, Thomson produced a highly original body of work rooted in American speech rhythms and hymnbook harmony. His music was most influenced by Satie's ideals of clarity, simplicity, irony, and humor. Among his most famous works are the operas Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All (both with texts by Gertrude Stein with whom he formed a legendary artistic collaboration), scores to "The Plow That Broke the Plains" and "The River" (films by Pare Lorentz), and "Louisiana Story" (film by Robert Flaherty). In addition to his compositions, he was the author of eight books, including an autobiography. Included in his many honors and awards are the Pulitzer Prize, a Brandeis Award, the gold medal for music from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Book Circle Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Music Council Award, and 20 honorary doctorates.

Foundation Until There is a Cure,
We Will Provide the Means to Cope!!

Hello, I'm Virgil Simons, welcome to my On-line Guide to Fighting Prostate Cancer . At the age of 48, after the results of my first PSA test, I was told that I might have prostate cancer. Staring into an abyss that seemed without hope, I questioned - was I going to die of cancer as my mother had?.......what treatments were possible?......could I survive?!
After a sufficient period of anger, self-pity and general confusion I made a decision - I AM GOING TO LIVE!!!! From that point on it was a matter of whether it would be on my terms or the prostate cancer's. KNOWLEDGE would be the edge to tip the balance to my favor - . But where to look, who to believe Then I saw my computer and the answer was evident and manifest - use this information highway as the road to save my own life.
In the eight years since that first diagnosis, through to a successful radical prostatectomy and subsequent clean PSA's, access to the Internet provided me with the information, dialogue with health care professionals and other survivors needed to regain control of my life. I became a partner with my doctors in deciding what was the best treatment for me that would be the greatest chance for cure and retention of the quality-of-life I desired!!

8. Virgil Finlay Biography
An illustrated biography.
http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/finlay.htm
Virgil Finlay was born July 23, 1914 in Rochester, New York. He was a star athlete in high school who went home after school and wrote poetry and drew pictures. Very little of his poetry ever saw print, but upwards to 2800 drawings and paintings, most printed on cheap pulp paper, made him the most famous fantasy illustrator of mid-twentieth century. (We'll give Frank Frazetta that honor for the last third.) How he ever managed to produce that quantity of quality images is a mind-boggling mystery once his techniques are explored. And how he could stipple. Finlay had discovered science fiction with Amazing Stories in 1927 and horror and fantasy with Weird Tales in 1928. He preferred the later and by 1935 he was confident enough that he could provide better illustrations that he sent six unsolicited drawings to Farnsworth Wright, the editor of Weird Tales pulp. Finlay's stippling ability almost lost him the job as Wright was uncertain that such fine dots would reproduce on the cheap pulp paper. Fortunately a test print proved acceptable. Enough of the detail remained to provide the readers with the rare experience of seeing a new artistic genius explode fully developed onto the scene. He had four illustrations in that issue. It was December of 1935. Finlay was 21. December 1935 Weird Tales Finlay's work was an immediate hit with the readers and the writers. Readers wrote in praising the illustrations. H.P. Lovecraft wrote him fan letters and even composed a poem about his art. Finlay was a fan of the genre as well as one of the most talented artists to enter the field. These combined to provide his work with a power and grace unknown in the pulps. The stippling, fine hatching and pebble board were all used in conjunction to give his images a texture and depth beyond anything ever seen in the field. It's hard to show the degree of detail of his drawings here on the web, but if you click on the small image at left you can get a fair idea of the effort he put into his art.

The great Roman poet Virgil (also spelled Vergil) was born on Oct. 15, 70 BC, in Andes, a village near Mantua in northern Italy. Virgil spent his childhood on his father's farm and was educated at Cremona, Milan, and then Rome, where he studied rhetoric. There he met poets and statesmen who were to play an important part in his life. When civil war broke out in 49 BC, he retired to Naples where he studied philosophy with the Epicurean Siro.
Beginning in 45 BC, encouraged by the statesman Pollio, Virgil spent eight or ten years composing the Eclogues , which were greatly admired in literary circles. They were adapted to the stage as mimes, and thus made him a popular, if elusive, figure. After the publication of the Eclogues , Virgil joined the literary circle of Gaius Maecenas, which would later include the poets Horace and Propertius. Over a period of seven years he wrote the

Virgil Franklin Partch, better known as VIP, has a unique slant to his cartoons and a style that's instantly recognizable. Born in Alaska in 1916, he studied at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the Chouinard Art Institute in California. He says, "I rather prided myself in my anatomical studies while in school. Such academicians as Rico LeBrun smiled on me and patted my hair for my ability at putting the old muscles and bones together." His spaghetti-limbed cartoon characters don't seem to have benefited from that part of his schooling. Six months into his Chouinard studies he landed a job at the Walt Disney studios in the "extracurricular Art Department", whatever that was. He was there for four years. He participated in the 1941 Disney studio strike and soon found himself living on unemployment insurance and submitting sample cartoons to the magazines like The Saturday Evening Post Collier's , and others. In 1942 he sold one to Collier's and never looked back. I love the first paragraph of Kyle Crichton's introduction to the first collection of his Collier's cartoons. In 1944's

VIRGIL (70-19 BC)
The greatest of the Roman poets, Publius Vergilius Maro, was not a Roman by birth. His early home was on a farm in the village of Andes, near Mantua. His father was a farmer, prosperous enough to give his son the best education. The young Virgil was sent to school at Cremona and then to Milan. At the age of 17 he went to Rome to study. There he learned rhetoric and philosophy from the best teachers of the day. After the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, the family farm was seized. The loss, however, proved to be a blessing in disguise, for it brought Virgil powerful friends. They introduced Virgil to the friends of Octavian, who was soon to become the emperor Augustus. Through his generosity Virgil was freed from financial worries and was able to devote himself entirely to literature. Thus his influence continued through the Middle Ages and into modern times. Superstitious people of medieval times looked upon his tomb at Naples with religious veneration. As time went on, I got more and more interested in this thing called “art”, and started dabbling in oils and watercolors. Raising a family at that time did not afford me the possibility of taking classes, so I started reading books and studying paintings by famous artists and well known teachers in my spare time, in an effort to teach myself how to create a piece of artwork. After the ump-teenth time of ruining a perfectly good canvas, I eventually wound up with a pencil in my hand producing I just couldn’t find any earthly reason to bother with all of those confusing colors.
