A Fire Upon The Deep
Reviewed July 2003 I first read this book in 1993, shortly after it came out, and ten years later I still think it's one of the greatest SF novels ever written, blending high-concept cool ideas with character and a tense and engaging plot. It's not to be missed. In this universe, the Milky Way galaxy is divided into three "zones of thought": The Unthinking Depths, the Slow Zone, and the Beyond, with the Transcend being the region outside the galaxy. The further you get from the center, the higher a level of intelligence and technology you can attain, and the higher speeds you can reach. Earth is in the Slow Zone, limited to lightspeed travel and moderate technology. Thousands of years in the future, however, humanity has reached the Beyond and has become one of the community of races inhabiting the outer shell. One human colony, however, while performing research in the Transcend, releases an ancient and evil superpower, which promptly begins to take over whole planets throughout the Beyond. However, one group of colonists escapes in a small ship with cryogenically frozen children to a world near the Slow Zone. This world is inhabited by pack-mind creatures dubbed the Tines, and their first encounter results in two dead humans, dozens of dead Tines, and the children, Johanna and Jefri, captured by opposite sides in an ongoing conflict among Tine nations. Meanwhile, forces elsewhere in the Beyond are justifiably disturbed by the Perversion the humans have released. A few reason that the ship on the Tines' world may contain some countermeasure to the evil power. As a result, a human librarian named Ravna, a reconstituted Slow Zone man named Pham Nuwen, and two Skroderiders - artificially mobile plants - embark on a journey to the Tines' world to find the ship. Meanwhile, the rest of the Beyond reacts variously to the Perversion: Trying to act against it directly, blaming the humans and trying to organize races to wipe them out, and considering it not really their problem, while the Perversion continues to expand its sphere of influence.

New! Interview at sysopmind. I consider Vernor Vinge to be one of the most visionary SF authors living today (it could be claimed this directly makes him one of the most visionary living authors, period, but I won't get into that.) His vision of technology is quite different from most SF, and on the surface seems quite fantastic, yet in fact feels the most realistic to me. His books have placed him in the extropian literary pantheon. Technology in much of SF is simply an effector of the vision of the work. FTL, anti-gravity, artificial gravity, all working to build interstellar empires regardless of the physical obstacles. Social changes are often minimal. Vernor Vinge is at the other extreme; in looking at the potential of realistic technology, particularly computers/AI or cognitive science, he has come to the conclusion that we must run into a Singularity beyond which meaningful prediction (and fiction) is impossible. Idealized nanotechnology also has potential for creating a singularity, although not as drastic as the one causable by control over the nature of intelligence. Much of his fiction is based on skirting around the Singularity and is quite interesting thereby. It is also well written.
Misc info:
Vernor Vinge has an e-mail address, but I understand it is work-related and thus naturally not meant for fan mail. He was indeed married to Joan D. Vinge between 1972 and 1979. And in my experience he is extremely hard to find in used bookstores marginally better than

Abstract
Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended. Is such progress avoidable? If not to be avoided, can events be guided so that we may survive? These questions are investigated. Some possible answers (and some further dangers) are presented.

V ernor Vinge, o  n  l  i  n  e    p  r  o  p  h  e  t The author whose science fiction classics predicted the Internet finds that reality is hard to keep up with. By Andrew Leonard April 5, 1999 F or historians of cyberculture, science fiction author Vernor Vinge enjoys unimpeachable street cred. Three years before William Gibson dazzled the SF world with "Neuromancer," Vinge captured the essence of the online reality to come in his eerily prescient 1981 novella, "True Names." Vinge's breakthrough 1992 novel, "A Fire Upon the Deep," continued his tradition of incorporating Internet flavors the intergalactic civilizations that flourish in its far, far future communicate with each other via a system that's remarkably similar to the Net's Usenet newsgroups. Longtime fans might be in for a bit of a surprise, however, when they read Vinge's new offering, "A Deepness in the Sky." There is no Internet analog in this entertaining, intricately plotted space opera, nor is there any sign of another Vinge standby the ever-popular artificially intelligent superbeing. Instead, "A Deepness in the Sky" (set in the same future as "A Fire Upon the Deep," only about 30,000 years earlier) takes place in a time when computers have yet to break through to sentience. It's a dramatic change of pace for Vinge forced on him, he confesses, by the accelerating pace of events in his own, real-time life.

"Across Realtime", by Vernor Vinge Millennium, UK paperback, 1994, £5.99, 544 pages. ISBN 1-85798-147-2 Comprises "The Peace War" & "Marooned in Realtime". Some editions may also contain the short story "The Ungoverned" Warning: This review contains some (I hope minor) spoilers. This diptych of novels has stuck in my mind ever since I read them as serials in Analog in 1984 & 1986. I always intended to read them again, but in the book versions, in case the serial had been cut, as sometimes happens. Recently, I came across this book in a second-hand shop, so I decided it was time to read these stories again. Unfortunately, I don't know how many people will get to read them for the first time, as this book is out of print, in both the UK and the US. This I do not understand. These two novels have a lot going for them, not least the fact that Vinge is now considered by many fans to be a major writer, as a result of "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky". I think we may consider the book at hand to be an important stage of the author's journey to that status. I hope we might see them reprinted shortly. So what about the stories? "The Peace War" is in many ways a fairly straightforward SF adventure, with the plot hanging on the consequences of one new invention: The Bobble. This is a new version of a fairly common SF gimmick, the stasis field. Unlike the traditional stasis field, bobbles can be projected, and once created need no power to maintain them. But they do eventually decay, dumping their contents into the future.

Think you can handle rapid change?
Think you can handle rapid change? Better hope so, because coming technologies will turn our world on its head. What we need to navigate the coming decades is the best-informed advice we can get, combined with the moral support of a community that shares our values and goals:
  • maximizing freedom extending human lifespan restoring the environment empowering individuals exploring and settling space spreading knowledge through openness alleviating poverty preventing the abuse of powerful technologies
Sounds great, but how? First, we need to get up to speed on the new tools already on the horizon:

A Critical Discussion of Vinge's Singularity Concept
Vernor Vinge begain speaking on his "singularity" concept in the 1980s, and collected his thoughts into his first article on the topic in 1993. Since then, Vinge has continued to give talks, and has elaborated on his concept in several media interviews The idea of an upcoming "singularity" has captured the imaginations of many, and has been the topic of thousands of conversations among those interested in the future. Such conversations, however, tend to be very wide ranging, and thus rarely focus on any one topic long enough to really give it a critical examination. (Some web commentary on the topic can be found here and here In the hopes of inducing a better critical examination of the singularity concept, I invited 34 people to write comments on Vinge's singularity concept. Thirteen of these people commented, and Vinge then responded to their comments. Finally, for a two weeks period (September 6-20, 1998) Vinge, the commentors, and anyone else who wanted to joined in an open discussion on the Extropians email list.
