Gore Vidal on the "United States of Amnesia," 9/11, the 2000 Election and the War in Iraq Gore Vidal is one of America's most prolific and best-known writers. He has written more than 22 books and more than 200 essays a collection of his essays won the National Book Award in 1993. Vidal is the author most recently of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace and Dreaming War: Blood for Oil and the Bush-Cheney Junta. Taken together, the books constitute a comprehensive attack on America’s imperialist ambitions and the military industrial complex. Writing in the Scotsman, critic Gavin Esler called Perpetual War "the finest serious critique of America's use and abuse of power in the 21st century that I have read." Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman recently met up with Gore Vidal for an extensive interview. The interview aired on May 13, 2003.

Vidal, Gore Williwaw A Novel . With a new Preface. 222 p. (est.). 5_1/4 x 8 1946, 2003 Paper NAM $15.00 0-226-85585-6 Spring 2003 A gripping tale of men struggling against nature and themselves, Williwaw was Gore Vidal's first novel, written at nineteen when he was first mate of the U.S. Army freight supply ship stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Here he writes of a ship caught plying the lethal, frigid Arctic waters during storm season. Tensions run high among the edgy crew and uneasy passengers even before the cruel wind that gives the book its title suddenly sweeps down from the mountains. Vividly drawn characters and a compelling murder plot combine to make Williwaw a classic war novel. "The young author of this concise view of the war's bleakest, most forgotten corner is a former warrant officer who ran an Army cargo-passenger ship in the Bering Sea. It is his first novel and exhibits little strain and lots of discipline. Within a tightly plotted story course, which is grayed over with damp, fog and the forlornness of the isolated, he buffets his characters into self-revealing conduct. . . . Vidal writes carefully but without self-consciousness. He has a good ear which he puts particularly to use in playing back the farce militaire New York Times "Vidal has an understanding of character and a skill in portraying it which makes his voyagers seem almost the elemental figures of all men at war."Jonathan Daniels

Gore Vidal
Gore Vidal is probably the closest thing I've ever had to a hero. In careful and measured prose he confidently delivers some of the most compelling, insightful, and often sharply witty observationson history, literature, and American politicsof any American writer alive.
More than merely a persistent political gadfly, Vidal is the quintessential insider, but observing from the out side. Despite his personal connections to major players in American political history, he has written about America mostly from Italy (Rome and Ravello)always the observer, watching from afar what he calls "the United States of Amnesia."
In 1960 he ran for Congress from New Yorkclose friends Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward frequently at his side. Vidal, running as a Democrat in overwhelmingly Republican Dutchess Co., lost the election, though he acquired while campaigning the close friendship of Eleanor Roosevelt, an enthusiastic supporter. Vidal has written more than a dozen prize-winning and best-selling novels, including

Notes
New Internationalist 357, June 2003 p31, recommends Gore Vidal`s Dreaming war: blood for oil and the Cheney-Bush junta (Clairview).
Paul Donovan draws on the book in his Morning Star articles `Find your own voice` (11 October 2003 p11), in which he argues that `journalists should not succumb to government spin`, and also `Putting two and two together` (30 March 2004, p7) questioning `who ultimately were the main beneficiaries` of the unusually relaxed reaction of the US authorities in the first minutes of the September 11 hijackings.

Right now we have a lot of liberals wagging their fingers telling us, "I
told you so," about the George Bush regime, that people who said there
was no difference between the two parties are now saying it's enormously
big. How in the wake of the reaction to September eleventh do you read
that kind of "no difference between the two" argument? Gore Vidal Well, Bush acted more quickly with repressive legislation
to push us further along the road to a police state, which Clinton, two
years after Oklahoma City, launched when he signed a special piece of
legislation, the Anti-Terrorist Act, which removed a number of our
