Jules Verne
Jules Verne was born in 1828, in Nates, France. Jules' parents were of a seafaring tradition, one factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, he ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for theater grew and from 1848 he wrote opera libretti. In 1863 his first novel Five Weeks in a Balloon was published. He struck a new vein in fiction writing by describing adventures carried out by means of scientific invention in exotic places, like submarines and space travel. He achieved huge popularity in his life time and greatly influenced the early work of H.G. Wells. MacArthur closes Jules Verne gap
Kingfisher2 has been at sea for 20 days in its record bid. Story Tools LONDON, England (CNN) British skipper Ellen MacArthur has closed the gap in her race to be the fastest boat around the world in the Jules Verne Trophy. Sailing a "blindingly fast" day on Monday, MacArthur and her crew were just 1.5 hours behind the record set by Bruno Peyron in Orange in 2000. The record stands at 64 days, 8 hours, 37 minutes and 24 seconds. Kingfisher2 started 20 days ago from Lorient, France. Kingfisher2 had been over 12 hours behind the record last week, but made up the time after sailing into strong winds. "Kingfisher2 sailed a blindingly fast day yesterday the boats fifth 500-plus mile 24-hour run in a row," the team's official Web site said on Tuesday. While Kingfisher2 was seven hours behind Orange's record to the Cape of Good Hope, the catamaran was 100 miles further south, giving it a more direct route around the world. Kingfisher2's rival Geronimo was 38 days into its record attempt. It had averaged 23 miles in the 24-hour period to Tuesday morning, covering 552 miles.

Ellen ends solitude for Jules Verne
MacArthur enjoyed an historic victory in the singlehanded Route du Rhum three weeks ago. Story Tools
LORIENT, France Ellen MacArthur is trading in her solo sailing days to skipper a crew of 14 in an attempt to beat the round-the-world record. MacArthur, who found fame sailing her monohull Kingfisher yacht single-handedly around the world, will make an attempt on the record during the Jules Verne Trophy in January. She will use Kingfisher 2, a 33.5 metre (110 foot) giant catamaran for the bid. Its previous owner was Frenchman Bruno Peyron who sailed it to set the current Jules Verne record in May, cutting seven days off the previous record set in 1997. His time is 64 days, 8 hours, 37 minutes and 24 seconds, for the 28,035 nautical miles covered at an average speed of 18.15 knots. His maxi catamaran Orange was bought by MacArthur and shore manager Mark Turner. Renamed Kingfisher 2, the catamaran has undergone a comprehensive refit including a new carbon mast, new sails, lightweight PBO fibre rigging and new electronics.

170. IX 5/2002, S. 160: Internet-Infos
Was fr¼her Sciencefiction war, ist heute Vergangenheit.

Would you like to be a better poet? This page is intended to help you actively write and respond to poetry, whether you're just beginning or are an experienced poet.. There's nothing worse than being in a slump when it comes to an artistic endeavor, and I've found I am most likely NOT to write when my mind is occupied with too many other things. I have learned it's best if I take time out once in a while and notice things happening around me. It's when I take time to play and write and imagine that my poems are the liveliest. If I experience writer's block, I simply go back to structured exercises to help me get started, again. One of the most basic exercises is to compare yourself to an inanimate object using a similie or metaphor. I am a filet o' fish
