PRESENTATION OF THE LAMFA In the " L aboratoire A M F ondamentale et A CNRS ) work the mathematicians of the Picardie-Jules-Verne University The LAMFA has six research groups: two of them have about ten members each, there are two more recently created teams of about 5 members each and there are two smaller groups.
  • Group theory
The research topics are finite reductive groups, Coxeter groups, real or complex reflexion groups, root systems, Hecke algebras and braid groups and homological properties of group and algebra representation. There is a weekly seminar GDR "tresses" . For graduate studies it is associated with the of Paris 6 University.
  • Applied analysis
This group works on the following topics : - Non-linear elliptic and parabolic PDE's : systems of prey-predators, calculus of variations, homogenization, free boundary problems. - Evolution PDE's : Non-Linear Schrodinger, KdV, Navier-Stokes, Maxwell, asymptotic behaviors, blow-up phenomena. - Real harmonic analysis : singular integrals, Kato problem, wavelets, kernel and operator analysis. - Scientific computations : finite differences, mixt finite elements, methods without meshs.

    Verne, Jules (1828-1905)
Born in Nantes and trained in law, Verne may not have been the first science fiction writer ( Lucian , Mary Shelley, and Edgar Allan Poe all having prior claims to that accolade) but he was certainly the first to explore the genre systematically and to make a fortune from it. Although he must have been familiar with the enthusiasm of his Parisian contemporary Flammarion for the possibility of life on other worlds, Verne barely touches upon the alien theme in his novels. The one minor exception is to be found in his only extraterrestrial venture, From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and its sequel Around the Moon . In the latter, he exploits Hansen's hypothesis that the Moon's far-side has an atmosphere, water and, possibly, life. His astronauts glimpse "... real seas, oceans, widely distributed, reflecting on their surface all the dazzling magic of the fires of space; and, lastly, on the surface of the continents, large dark masses, looking like immense forests ..." In other respects, his lunar novels remarkably presaged Apollo, even to the extent of describing a three-man crew, a Florida launch site and a splashdown point in the Pacific just three miles from where Apollo 11 landed. All Verne's early novels captured the Victorian enthusiasm for science and technology, though the optimistic ideology in them may have stemmed more from the urging of Verne's publisher, the commercially-minded Pierre-Jules Hetzel, than Verne himself who seems by nature to have been a techno-skeptic. Jules Verne
© eMe Textos:

    The Dutch Jules Verne Society
The Dutch Jules Verne Society (Jules Verne Genootschap) was founded on October 25th, 1997. Its aim is to collect, process and distribute information of and about Jules Verne and his works, and of publications on this subject. In order to do this, the Society organizes meetings and activities for its members and for others.
    Photos of activities.
    Meeting
Twice a year, there is a meeting of the Society. The people present have the opportunity to trade books, old valuable antiquarian books as well as more modern ones, e.g. in other languages. In spring the general assembly takes place, in autumn there is a shorter discussion session. Then there is a talk, a film-show or something similar. The meeting ends with the distribution of the Verniaan.

Verne, Jules Pronunciation Key Verne, Jules Verne is especially known to English readers in translations of his Five Weeks in a Balloon A Journey to the Center of the Earth From the Earth to the Moon Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea Around the World in Eighty Days The Mysterious Island (1875), and Michael Strogoff (1876). Extremely popular, he wrote more than 50 books by the time he died. Plays and motion pictures have been made from many of his works, which are still widely read, particularly by the young. In 1989 the manuscript of Verne's long-lost 1863 novel Paris in the 20th Century was discovered; the pessimistic and prophetic futurist work was published in 1994. See A. B. Orange suffers Jules Verne calamity
Orange: Back on dry land for damage assessment BREST, France An attempt by the maxi-catamaran Orange to break the round-the-world record has suffered a major setback when its mast broke just half an hour into the voyage. The 33.5m (110ft) catamaran with 14 crew had set off from the French port of Brest on Thursday, hoping to set the pace in the Jules Verne Trophy for the non-stop race. But French skipper Bruno Peyron, who was the first holder of the trophy nine years ago, was back to the drawing board when the tip of the mast snapped about half a metre from the top as the multihull sped under gennaker at 28 knots in a 20-25 knot wind. Nobody was hurt and none of the metal fittings or sails were damaged. The crew carried out emergency proceedings to drop the gennaker. One of the crew was sent up the mast to free the jammed sail and prevent further damage to the mast.
