Henry Vaughan
Henry Vaughan was born into a middle-class Welsh family in Breconshire. In 1638 he went to Jesus College, Oxford, with his brother Thomas, who later achieved fame as an alchemist. Henry left Oxford in 1640 without taking a degree, and spent two years in London studying law. He was recalled home when the Civil War broke out, and he is thought to have served on the Royalist side in South Wales sometime around 1645.
In 1646 Vaughan married Catherine Wise and published his first book of verse, Poems, with the Tenth Satire of Juvenal Englished. The poems were secular in theme and attracted little attention. They appear uninspired when compared with the religious poetry of Silex Scintillus. In the preface to the second edition of Silex Vaughan attributes the transformation of his life and work to a spiritual awakening brought about by reading the poems of 'the blessed man, Mr. George Herbert'. On the title page of this work, he describes himself as 'Henry Vaughan, Silurist' referring to the ancient British tribe of Silures who once lived in Brecon.
During the 1650s Vaughan began practising medicine. After the death of his first wife he married her sister Elizabeth in about 1655. He had four children by each wife, and in his later years he became involved in legal wrangles with his older children. Though his poetry did not attract much attention for a long time after his death, Vaughan is now established as one of the finest religious poets in the language, and in some respects he surpassed his literary and spiritual master, George Herbert.

Henry Vaughan
Henry Vaughan was born at Newton-upon-Usk in Brecknockshire, Wales, the twin brother of the celebrated alchemist Thomas Vaughan. Both he and his brother attended Jesus College, Oxford but Henry left without taking a degree to study Law in London. His studies were disrupted by the Civil War, however, and he returned to Wales to practise as a doctor. He published his first work, Poems, with the Tenth Satire of Juvenal Englished in 1646, followed by Olor Iscamus The Swan of Usk ) in 1651. His most memorable poetry is contained in his Silex Scintillans The Gleaming Flint ), a collection of meditative and religious poems which convey the depth of his faith and the sadness of lost innocence: "O how I long to travel back, And tread again that ancient track". His final work Thalia Rediviva , published in 1678, somewhat lacks his earlier sensitivity. He also produced a number of prose works on religious and medieval themes. Henry Vaughan was proud of his Welsh origins and liked to be known as the Silurist after the Silures, one of the ancient British tribes which formerly inhabited Brecknockshire. The Retreat

The Timber
SURE thou didst flourish once! and many springs,
Many bright mornings, much dew, many showers,
Pass'd o'er thy head; many light hearts and wings,
Which now are dead, lodg'd in thy living bowers. And still a new succession sings and flies;
Fresh groves grow up, and their green branches shoot
Towards the old and still enduring skies,
While the low violet thrives at their root. But thou beneath the sad and heavy line
Of death, doth waste all senseless, cold, and dark;
Where not so much as dreams of light may shine,
Nor any thought of greenness, leaf, or bark.
Bred in thy growth betwixt high winds and thee, Before they come, and know'st how near they be. Else all at rest thou liest, and the fierce breath Of tempests can no more disturb thy ease; But this thy strange resentment after death About the poet Henry Vaughan By the same poet The Retreat Peace Friends Departed Related books Henry Vaughan at amazon.com Advertisement To advertise here, please contact us Home Poets Poems ... As if all this were not enough, the sheer loveliness of the Vale of Usk made Henry mindful of the beauty and wisdom of the Creator himself:

Paradoxically, it was the very pain he suffered that brought Henry closer to God. He expresses this clearly in the poem . In its opening lines, he identifies himself with fallen humanity:
Here under clouds, where storm and tempest blast
A train of lights, which in those sunshine days Were my sure guides, and only with me stays (Unto my cost) One sullen beam, whose charge is to dispense A plenteous way (thanks to that holy one!) His saving wound Wept blood that broke this adamant, and gave

The Retreat
HAPPY those early days, when I
Before I understood this place
Appointed for my second race,
Or taught my soul to fancy aught
But a white celestial thought:
A mile or two from my first Love,
Could see a glimpse of His bright face:
My gazing soul would dwell an hour,
And in those weaker glories spy
Some shadows of eternity:
Before I taught my tongue to wound My Conscience with a sinful sound, Or had the black art to dispense But felt through all this fleshly dress Bright shoots of everlastingness. O how I long to travel back, And tread again that ancient track! That I might once more reach that plain Where first I left my glorious train; That shady City of Palm-trees. But ah! my soul with too much stay Is drunk, and staggers in the way! Some men a forward motion love, But I by backward steps would move; And when this dust falls to the urn In that state I came, return.
Peace
MY soul, there is a country Far beyond the stars, All skilful in the wars: There, above noise and danger

    The Showre

    'Twas so, I saw thy birth: That drowsie Lake From her faint bosome breath'd thee, the disease Of her sick waters, and Infectious Ease. But, now at Even Too grosse for heaven, Thou fall'st in teares, and weep'st for thy mistake. Ah! It is so with me; oft have I prest Heaven with a lazie breath, but fruitles this Peirc'd not; Love only can with quick accesse Unlock the way, When all else stray The smoke, and Exhalations of the brest. Yet, if as thou doest melt, and with thy traine Of drops make soft the Earth, my eyes could weep O'er my hard heart, that's bound up, and asleep, Perhaps at last (Some such showres past,) My God would give a Sun-shine after raine.

    My Soul, there is a Countrie Far beyond the stars, Where stands a winged Centrie All skilfull in the wars, There above noise, and dnager Sweet peace sits crown'd with smiles, And one born in a Manger Commands the Beauteous files, He is they gracious friend, And (O my Soul awake!) Did in pure love descend To die her for thy sake, If thou canst get but thither, There growes the flowre of peace, The Rose that cannot wither, Thy fortresse, and thy ease; Leave them thy foolish ranges; For none can thee secure, But one, who never changes, Thy God, thy life, they Cure.

  • Davies's book appears in Seren's Border Line Series, a set of mostly introductory studies dedicated to writers on both sides of the England-Wales border, including A. E. Housman, Wilfred Owen, Mary Webb, and Raymond Williams. The series editor, John Powell Ward, however, distinguishes Davies's Vaughan from more elementary works in the set. In his afterword to the volume, Ward comments that while Davies's book is not "`academic' in the pejorative sense . . .; at the same time it is a specialist book, entailing among other things the essential scholarly apparatus such a study requires." It seems that Ward has allowed Davies a bibliography, parenthetic notes, professional acknowledgments, and an index, undoubtedly in the hope that the work might contribute to scholarly discourse about Vaughan. In fact, it does, in brilliant patches, however erratically.
