The Last Crossing by Guy Vanderhaeghe
[read excerpt] San Francisco Chronicle review
    by Mark Luce
Toronto Globe and Mail review ...
    by Zachary Houle
In The Last Crossing , Charles and Addington Gaunt leave Victorian England to travel to the American frontier in search of their brother, Simon, who came to Montana country to bring religion to the Indians. Charles is a thoughtful portrait artist and Addington is an egocentric disgraced military captain. They are joined by Lucy Stoveall who is out to avenge her sister's murder, Civil War veteran Custis Straw who loves Lucy, and his loyal friend, Aloysius Dooley. The brothers hire Jerry Potts, a half-Blackfoot, half-Scot to be their guide. As they each struggle with their inner demons, the group wanders through the American and Canadian west in their quests. Canadian author Guy Vanderhaeghe has fashioned a literary western that not only explores the frontiers of new countries, but the depths of men's and women's souls. The Last Crossing has received high praise with the San Francisco Chronicle saying, "Vanderhaeghe gives us countless fantastic experiences in one powerful, beautiful and heartbreaking novel."

by James Parker You would think by now Guy Vanderhaeghe would enter a room with a bit of a swagger. After all, the Saskatoon author is two-time winner of the Governor-General's award. His work has received praise from Timothy Findlay, Margaret Atwood and other charter members of the CanLit elite. He has been known to hobnob with legendary novelist Mordecai Richler. He has arrived. In fact, he arrived a few years back. But when he arrives at the Windows Restaurant in the Sheraton Cavalier, Vanderhaeghe is the very picture of Saskatchewan self-effacement. Dressed casually, like the academic he almost became, he is polite, quiet and friendly. There are no affectations, no preening self-awareness, none of the arrogant irascibility sometimes attributed to the artistically talented. He's a regular guy, the type who goes to work each morning, plays hockey once a week and likes to catch the odd college basketball game on TV.

    "The Last Crossing"
(reviewed by Mary Whipple MAR 9, 2004)
"We are not alone.Given time, the spirit of the universe will accept us. For the present, it asks us simply to be. To be ourselves and not someone else's dream of us." In this broad saga of the New Territories, from Montana into Canada, Guy Vanderhaeghe brings to life the search of two Englishmen for their lost brother, Simon Gaunt, who has pursued a charismatic preacher from England to North America in the hopes of converting the Indians to Christianity. No word has been heard from him in over a year. Sent to North America by their stern and unforgiving father to find the missing Simon, twin brother Charles Gaunt is determined to find and return with him to England, though older brother Addington is far less committed to that end. For Addington, the expedition is intended to be a tribute to his own bravery and celebration of his hunting skill-adventure at the expense of his frantic father. When Addington arrives at Fort Benton, where he is to begin the expedition, he is accompanied by a fawning newspaper writer, Caleb Ayto, who will "'work something up' about his forthcoming rambles on the frontier, [and] scribble a flattering portrayal of Captain Addington Gaunt, intrepid British explorer and sportsman, for the delight of the public back home." To his brother Charles's disgust, Addington fails to begin the search for Simon immediately, though winter is fast approaching: "For the moment, Addington finds Fort Benton too congenial a place to immediately remove himself. There is game to be had a short ride out of the town, and he and Ayto make frequent visits to the pestilential brothels. He.[buys] rounds of drinks for men who are only too happy to hear him bray and brag as long as he keeps the whisky flowing."

The Last Crossing by Guy Vanderhaeghe Published by Atlantic Monthly Press 368 pages, 2004 The Dirty Old West Reviewed by David Abrams While reading Guy Vanderhaeghe's novel of the Old West, The Last Crossing , you might want to slip a little mood music into your CD player: a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, perhaps something with a lonely harmonica, a chorus of whistles that sound like coyotes, or a rousing crescendo that climaxes with the crack of a bullwhip. The Last Crossing is a widescreen, big-landscape novel populated with rough, grimy characters who'd feel right at home in a western movie with or without spaghetti. Yet, Vanderhaeghe's novel is more than a sage-and-saddle yarn filled with cowboys and Indians; it's a saga about family ties, class prejudice, and failed ambition. On some levels, it's Middlemarch with chewing tobacco. Originally published in Canada two years ago, it's only just now making its way south of the border after garnering awards, hitting the bestseller list and being picked as the "Canada Reads" book. Though parts of the novel are set in Saskatchewan
